Everyone talks about ambition.

Almost no one audits their habits.

After 2 decades in the corporate world, 
I’ve seen this again and again:

Ambition is inspiring. Talent is impressive.

But repetition wins.

And here’s the truth:

✨ You don’t become what you want.
You become what you repeat. ✨ 

Good habits aren’t dramatic.
They are the small things you repeat every day.

They look like:

• Resting without guilt
• Starting meetings on time
• Pausing before you respond
• Letting someone finish their sentence
• Prioritizing sleep as non-negotiable
• Moving your body even when you’re busy
• Saying “I don’t know” instead of pretending
• Closing your laptop when lunch or dinner starts
• Sending the difficult message instead of avoiding it
• Asking yourself why you lead, not just what you lead
• Keeping your word, especially when it’s inconvenient
• Apologizing to your team quickly when you misbehave
• Listening to your loved ones without checking your phone
• Admitting you were wrong without blaming circumstances

None of these make headlines.
All of them shape who you become.

Ambition is declared.
Character is demonstrated.

I spent 19 years in corporate.
I’ve spent the last decade coaching high performers.

Here’s what I’ve learned:
Strong leaders don’t protect their ego. 

I’ve sat in meetings where the team seems to agree.
Heads nodding. 
No hard questions. 
No one pushing back.

Later, the real opinions came out in the hallway.
That’s not alignment. That’s people playing it safe.

I’ve also worked with leaders who pause and ask:
• What is missing?
• Who sees it differently?
• What would challenge this idea?

And when someone speaks up, there’s no tension. No shutdown. No punishment later.

Just: Good. Let’s explore that.

Because the way you respond teaches people whether it’s safe to be honest.

➡️ If no one feels safe to challenge, the team weakens and disengages.

Here are five signs a leader truly wants real feedback:
1. They invite opinions from the team
2. They stay calm when challenged
3. They admit when they’re wrong
4. They thank people for honesty
5. They change when needed

Leadership isn’t about getting everyone to agree.
It’s about people thinking, sharing, and owning their ideas.

Strong teams don’t sit in silent rooms.

You cannot fake this.

Because energy is a reflection of how you feel about people.

If you truly love working with people,
their growth, their quirks, their strengths,
they’ll feel that.

You have to love people ❤️ 

Not in a naïve way.
In a responsible way.

The most attractive leaders are not the most perfect.

They are the ones whose energy says:

“It’s safe here.”
“I believe in you.”
“We can do this.”
“And we can enjoy it.”

Energy is contagious.
Spread the kind you’d want to catch.

Confidence didn’t make me a better leader.
Responsibility did.

When I moved to Vietnam as a first-time General Manager,
I had never led a full team before.

I was young.
Far from home.
And I didn’t feel ready.

There was doubt.
There were sleepless nights.

After 1 year, I broke down in front of the Head of HR in Paris.

He was kind.
He told me he’d support me if I chose to step back.

I almost did.

But I chose to stay.

And that decision changed everything.

Because from that moment on, it was *my choice*.
Not pressure. Not pride. Not ego.
Choice.

That shift changed how I carried responsibility.

I stopped trying to look confident.
I focused on being steady.

When sales missed target
month after month, my instinct was panic.

Everything in me wanted to push promotions.
Chase volume.
Show quick recovery.

Because when you lead,
missing numbers don’t just hurt performance.
It hits your credibility.

Instead, we stepped back.

We clarified priorities.
We doubled down on service.
We refused short-term discounts.
We focused on quality, not quick revenue.

Was it easy? No.

It meant owning missed targets on regional calls
and carrying the consequences.

But leadership isn’t about protecting your image.
It’s about protecting the long-term health of the business,
and the morale of the people building it.

That was the call we made.

Over time, I learned:

Energy shapes strategy.
Calm beats confidence.
Listening builds authority.
Team silence isn’t alignment.
Busyness hides weak priorities.
Your team borrows your stability.
If everything is urgent, nothing is strategic.
Achievement without alignment feels empty.
Exhausted leaders react. Rested leaders decide.
Carry the pressure. Let the team carry the work.

Leadership isn’t about how confident you feel.

It’s about how safe your team feels.
How steady your presence is.
How intentionally you show up, 
especially under pressure.

You don’t have to feel ready.

You have to be willing.

When I first started my career, I was told

I'd never be more than an Assistant.

That I simply didn’t have what it takes to be more.

I cried silently.

But I didn’t argue.
And I didn’t rush to prove them wrong.

I stayed in the work.

I treated it like data.
Information, not identity.

Then I built.

Nineteen years.
Four countries.

There were promotions.
There were rejections.

I learned not to wait to be chosen.
I asked for opportunities.
I negotiated when it was time.

Sometimes I got the seat.
Sometimes I applauded the person who did.

And then, at the height of it,
I chose to step down.

Not because I couldn’t go further.
But because growth requires courage in both directions.

So I became a student again.

And I was clapping for others who continued to grow.

Not because I didn’t want the growth.
But because I had learned something in my first decade of corporate life:

Careers are long.
Reputation compounds.
Preparation compounds.
Character compounds.

Mindset compounds too.

Not every leader believes in growth.

Some operate from abundance.
Others from fear.

And certain mindsets cost you more than you realize.

Jealousy consumes energy that could have been invested in building.
Scarcity makes success feel like a limited seat.
Bitterness narrows your perspective.

I don’t know what drove that early comment about my future.

But I do know this:

✨ Supporting others never delayed my progress.
It strengthened it. ✨ 

Because when you focus on building
instead of comparing,
you expand.

And here is what 2 decades have taught me:

Your moment isn’t luck.
It’s alignment meeting preparation.

Support others loudly.
Build yourself quietly.

The ones who stay in the work long enough
don’t need to chase their turn.

It meets them.

When I moved from the Netherlands to the other side of the world, 
I asked L’Oréal for a lateral role.

Relocating already felt significant.
A new country,
a new culture,
a language I knew, but had never led in.

That felt like enough growth.

Instead, they asked me to lead a team.

I wasn’t sure I was ready.

Not because I lacked capability.
But because part of me still felt small.

I had delivered strong results and earned the opportunity, 
yet I still questioned whether I was “big” enough for it.

L’Oréal saw leadership in me before I fully embodied it myself.

And then reality began.

In my first leadership role, I made mistakes.

I was too direct.
I made people cry.

My leadership style, shaped by Dutch directness,
landed very differently across cultures.

I cared deeply about performance.
I cared about standards.
I cared about the business and the numbers.

What I didn’t yet understand was how my energy landed on people.

That became my real leadership education.

Not strategy.
Not KPIs.

*Awareness*

How to regulate before reacting.
Learning how to be clear without being cutting.
How to hold high standards without shrinking someone else.

That moment could have made me retreat.

It would have been easy to say, “I wasn’t ready.”

But growth is not given.

You have to want it.

You have to be willing to look at yourself.
To adjust.
To expand your capacity.

Responsibility stretched me.
Willingness transformed me.

If I had given me the lateral role I asked for, 
I might have stayed comfortable for a few more years.

Instead, I grew.

We do not grow because we feel big.

We grow because we step into responsibility before we feel ready,
and choose to learn along the way.

The sky didn’t feel mine at first.
I had to grow into it.

Today, I see this in many high performers:

They execute brilliantly.
They carry real responsibility.
Yet internally, they still minimize themselves.

✨ Humility keeps you grounded.

It was never meant to keep you small.

You can honor your humility.
And still claim the sky.

Pain is part of growth.
Self-pity is not.

Careers aren’t linear.
Neither is growth.

There are seasons of momentum.
And seasons that test your identity.

Hardship isn’t separate from growth.
It is the training ground for it.

You’re allowed to feel pain.

➡️ But here’s the distinction:

There’s the pain of the situation.
And then there’s the story you attach to it.

“This shouldn’t be happening to me.”
“Maybe I’m not capable.”
“I’m behind.”

That second layer is optional.

Feeling pain is human.
Staying trapped in a powerless narrative is a choice.

This isn’t blind optimism,
or pretending, or denial.

It’s responsibility 👈 

Ownership sounds like this:
“This is hard. 
What can I learn? 
What’s my next step?”

And notice the sentence running in your head.
Is it a fact, or a story?

Nothing changes by wishing.
It changes by moving.

Like any summit, the path isn’t straight.
There are dips.
Plateaus.
Moments that test your confidence.

But you are still climbing.

And every time you choose ownership over self-pity,
you build resilience.

In leadership.
In your career.
In your life.

Hard seasons aren’t proof that you’re off track.

They are part of the training.

💬 What narrative are you reinforcing in hard seasons?

The most common leadership confession:

“I’m tired.”

Tired of never being able to switch off.
Tired of always having the answers.
Tired of never showing doubt.
Tired of carrying the weight.

And when we go deeper in coaching…

It’s rarely the journey they’re tired of.

Most high performers aren’t afraid of effort.

They can handle responsibility.
They can handle stretch.
They can handle growth.

➡️ What drains them isn’t the work.
It’s the identity they’ve built around it.

The one who is always composed.
The one who doesn’t let cracks show.
The one who earns respect through results.
The one who feels responsible for everything.

Over time, that identity becomes heavy.

Identity is heavier than effort.

Effort can energize when it’s chosen.
Identity exhausts when it’s rigid.

✨ High Performance isn’t about pushing harder.
It’s about outgrowing the identity that exhausts you. ✨ 

High Performance =
- It’s leading with values, not ego.
- It’s discipline without self-neglect.
- It’s sustained clarity under pressure.
- It’s regulated energy when the stakes are high.
- It’s trusting your team’s expertise while owning the direction.

It’s saying, “We don’t know yet, but we’ll solve it.”

That’s strength.

Sometimes growth isn’t about doing more.

It’s about letting go of the version of you that was built to succeed, but no longer serves you.

So here’s the real reflection:

Are you tired of the journey?
Or ready to outgrow who you’ve become inside it?

A dysregulated leader cannot create a regulated team.

Stress isn’t the enemy.
Chronic and unmanaged stress is:

When sleep suffers,
when patience shortens,
when reactivity becomes the default.

- how safe your team feels

Their standards were high.

But so was their steadiness.
