- Make it RELEVANT for the audience.
- Make it CLEAR in your message  

After coaching 300+ people 1:1, I can tell you the kicker is being RELEVANT.  Most people present to be 'clear' but never tie their message to what matters to the audience.

2) 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.

People have to know at the outset 'what's in it for them' by listening and engaging your presentation.  

- Give CONTEXT - Why are we here?
- Give the TOPIC - "today we'll discuss..."
- Give the SO WHAT- "... so that..."

The 3rd part is the critical point.  What is the VALUE people will walk away with from your presentation or conversation. 

3) 𝗔𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸, 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲..."

It has to connect to something they care about.
If it doesn't, they'll disengage.

And yes, you can use the "This matters because..."  When you do, watch people reengage... they'll look up from their phones and laptops.

While the spotlight feels scary, what's happening is your mind is turning inward to 'what are they going to think of me?' 

The cure... shifting your focus to adding value & serving your audience.

2️⃣ What you’re feeling is called 'reputation risk'.

You’re not afraid of speaking… you’re afraid of what people think of you. Good news... that’s 100% normal! The cure... shocker... focus on serving them vs 'looking good to them'.

3️⃣ You don’t have a repeatable game plan.

We all feel nerves when you don't have a checklist to do something that matters. So then, you feel the nerves and the anxiety of 'how you'll look'. A repeatable game plan fixes that. 

A great game plan also delivers VALUE to your audience. When that happens, it gives your brain a reason to relax.

Many nonprofits lose 6-figure deals because they say 1 sentence the wrong way (here are 5 shifts that fix it fast): 

You did everything right. Built trust. Earned the meeting.
And now… you’re at the ask.

This is where most nonprofits lose the deal 
Not because of the budget.
But because of a sentence.

The wrong words at the wrong time can quietly kill what could’ve been a 6-figure, multi-year collaboration.

Here are 5 sentence-level shifts that make the difference:

1. “We’d be honored by your support.”
❌ Sounds like charity.
✅ Say instead: “We built this with leaders like you in mind.”


2. “We’re hoping you’ll consider a gift.”
❌ Hope = hesitation.
✅ Say: “We’re aligning with partners driving systemic change.”


3. “This donation will help us continue our work.”
❌ Vague. No stakes.
✅ Try: “Here’s what your partnership will create in 12 months and who it’ll impact.”


4. “Can we count on your generosity?”
❌ Passive.
✅ Use: “We’d like to co-design a high-impact initiative you’re proud to champion.”


5. “Any amount helps.”
❌ Minimizes the value of the opportunity.
✅ Flip it: “We only partner when the impact matches the investment.”


The ask isn’t the problem.
The framing is.

You don’t close major funding by sounding grateful.

You close it by sounding aligned.
