Sharif is a trial lawyer and a partner at Blackburn, Conte, Schilling & Click, P.C. He tried cases as a United States Army JAG Officer and as a Drug and Vice Prosecutor, served as a Federal Judicial Law Clerk at a trial court, and now takes cases to trial as a personal injury lawyer and as trial counsel. There is nothing more professionally exciting for Sharif than preparing for and going to trial. And there is no greater privilege for Sharif than getting results for his clients.

Sharif cares deeply about his work and the people he represents. His record is evidence of this: in the Army, he successfully defended hundreds of soldiers at trial, in adverse administrative proceedings, and under investigation; as a prosecutor, he pursued justice for victims and earned a reputation among judges and defense attorneys for being persuasive and fair; and as a personal injury lawyer, he has won millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements.

A senior attorney explained that “in all aspects of our practice, Sharif prepares like no other, persuades like no other, and—to the opposing party’s frustration—gets results like no other.”

Sharif graduated valedictorian and as a distinguished military graduate from the Virginia Military Institute. Among other honors, his class elected him to serve as a prosecutor on VMI’s Honor Court, where he prosecuted honor offenses and first discovered his love for trial work.

Sharif received his law degree from the University of Virginia. During law school, he served on the Virginia Journal of Criminal Law’s Managing Board; led an Army Reserve Drill Sergeant Unit; and clerked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, and the United States Solicitor General’s Office.

Sharif earned his masters of law degree in trial advocacy from the Temple University Beasley School of Law, which has consistently been ranked as the nation’s top trial training program for more than twenty years.
 
Sharif also graduated from the Gerry Spence Method — the premier training for trial lawyers who represent people. 

Away from work, Sharif enjoys spending time with his wife and son, learning songs on his acoustic guitar, playing on a kickball team, and working out each morning at a CrossFit gym.

I thought there was a formula.

Do well in law school. Land a good job. Put your head down, work hard, climb the ladder.
Simple, right?

Except it’s not.

I once took a job that looked perfect on paper.
Big title. Big salary. Big promise.
Three months in, I was waking up at 3am.
Not because I had too much to do—but because I couldn’t shake the feeling I was moving further from the kind of lawyer (and person) I wanted to be.

Leaving felt like failure.
But staying wouldn't have been any better.

So I quit.
Not to chase a dream.
Just to stop betraying myself.

That decision didn’t “ruin” my career. It saved it.

I used to think people who pivoted were lost.
Now I know better.

Sometimes the strongest, most self-aware thing you can do is say:
“This isn’t working anymore.”

Careers are messy.
The LinkedIn highlight reel doesn’t show the 3am wake-ups, the quiet dread, or the hard decisions made in silence.

But they’re there.
For most of us.

So if your path feels off—you’re not broken.

They say I’m “aggressive.”

I say: I follow the rules. 

Delay is baked into the defense playbook:

-They’re not ready to schedule a trial.
-They need extensions—for everything.
-Their discovery responses are surface-level at best.

They’re hoping we’ll slow down.
Or give up.
Or settle short.

We won’t.

At our firm, we’re trial lawyers. And we prepare accordingly.

Every move we make—from pleadings to discovery to depositions—is with trial in mind.
Because that’s where the leverage is.
That’s where the truth comes out.
And that’s where the best outcomes happen for the people we represent.

So yes, when we file a case, we expect to try it.
We don’t bluff.
We don’t posture.
We work to get our clients the results they deserve.

If that makes me “aggressive”—I’ve come to be okay with that.

It means we’re doing it right.

I used to get angry when the defense dragged their feet on discovery or ignored deadlines. 

Now, instead of getting angry, I see these situations as opportunities.

Aggression can have a negative connotation, but to me, it means being proactive and dogged for my clients.
 
Say discovery is due, and instead of actually getting discovery, the defense files objections right at the deadline and says, "We’ll get it to you in a few days." I used to get frustrated by that, and try to get some movement by announcing that we're going to follow motions. Now I just file a motion to compel immediately once the defense crosses the line.

I don’t play around. They try to skirt the rules, I'll file a motion to strictly enforce them, and we resolve it in court. I want every opposing counsel to know that there are real consequences when they play with my clients. I don't play back. I work the case.

For me, it’s not just getting the discovery my client is owed. It's a chance to let the court see who’s being unreasonable. The defense plays what they think are clever games, but end up subject to multiple motions and a growing record that they're not following the rules while we’re simply there to fight for our client. The judge sees it all.
 
I'm always respectful and professional, but I cut no slack. If there’s an issue, I file a motion.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to play fair. I don't waste my clients' precious time on top of what was already taken from them. I just do what needs to be done to move the case and seek the justice they deserve.

It took me a while to realize: the most powerful purpose of a deposition isn’t to learn—
It's to find the clips that you can play at trial.
 
When I’m deposing a corporate defendant, sure, I want to dig, to keep uncovering details. But my main goal is to get 30, 60, or 90 seconds that I can use at trial, and just push play.
 
When you have that kind of mindset in a deposition, that's when you get the gold.
 
If someone makes a wild admission or says something ridiculous on video, I don't need to argue the point. I just need to capture the moment. I keep my mouth shut, because I know later, I get to show the jury exactly what they said.
 
In a recent case, the defendant actually said, "If you lean on a railing and it falls, that's expected because railings are there to guide you, not to lean on." I didn’t have to challenge it. It was all on video for the jury to hear for themselves.
 
Clips like these are also great for settlement negotiations.
 
Sometimes, after videotaped depositions, I send clips to the defense attorney and ask them to forward them to their adjuster. I need them to see what they’ll be up against if they don’t meet our demand. 

Then again, if I think I need a verdict to get my client what they deserve, I'll hold on to those clips for the courtroom.
 
In trial, my goal is to tell the most compelling story possible. And if deposition video clips show the defendant telling on themself directly to the jury, there's no better story I could tell.

Every Sunday morning, we go to the river.

Just me and the kids.
No matter the weather.
No matter the excuses.

And we’ve stuck with it. For years now.

It’s not a big thing, really.
But it’s become one of the things I’m proudest of.

I'm a big believer that if you want something to matter, you make time for it.
