Yes, we're ending our business relationship...

I've known Tina for 7 years and worked with her on and off for 5.

We have a lot in common and we've become great friends.

Now we're going in different directions. Which makes me sad.

But I'm also excited - for both of us!

Tina wants to do something that lights up her soul, and I have no doubt what she's working on is going to be incredible. (Watch that space!)

And I want to do what I do best - helping people with their LinkedIn & business growth strategy. 

So we're both doubling down on what works for each of us.

It doesn't mean I'll never work with Tina again. I'm sure I will. We'll always have a connection and I know we'll collaborate on projects in future.

After 7 Years Teaching LinkedIn, 

I'm Excited to Announce... 

𝗜'𝗺 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿.

I ran a workshop yesterday.

It's the first one I've run in ages.

I didn't do much marketing for it, just a couple of posts and emails here and there so I wasn't expecting a big turnout.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴... 😅

• All attendees were called 'Adrian Shiel'
• The reminder emails went out one hour early
• We hit the 100 attendee limit so some couldn't join

Could have thrown me completely, especially as there were 100 people and I thought there would be 15 or 20 🫣

But I caught myself and managed to see the funny side. 

When I've done workshops in the past I've been super nervous.

Trying to make sure everything went perfectly.

And it was draining... 

But yesterday I made the decision beforehand that no matter what happened, I was just going to show up as me, with all my imperfections.

And 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙩.

So I'm going to start doing them regularly again.

10 years ago I woke up with a bad feeling in my gut.

Something was very wrong...

But I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

I was struggling to face the day and I didn't know why.

But I knew I had to make a huge change.

The problem was, I was comfortable. I had a great job. People in the company were envious of it. But I hated it. And I felt guilty about that.

The fact was, I was doing something that I just couldn't see making a difference in the world and it was slowly eating away at me.

I had to get out. So I did. But I had no idea what I wanted to do.

All I knew was:

• I wanted to be my own boss
• I wanted the freedom of working online
• I wanted to see I was actually helping people

I embarked on may projects, most of them failures, but I never gave up. 

It hasn't always been an easy journey and there have been countless ups and downs along the way. But I'm still here, battle scarred, but stronger for it.

Entrepreneurship isn't all rainbows and butterflies. It's often grinding and hustling to get results. 

I still think it's worth it though. Because it not only pushes you to find and push through your limits, but it forces you to become a better, stronger version of yourself.

Just saying... 🤓

Your content is going to get less impressions

It’s a fact. Get used to it…

At least for the near future.

The number of LinkedIn users regularly creating content is at an all time high. 

3 years ago it was less than 1%.

I heard the other day it was now more like 50% (although I find that hard to believe).

Either way, content creation has become easier than ever since the advent of AI. It’s completely changing the face of social media, especially LinkedIn.

And now, LinkedIn has introduced their ‘Boost’ feature so anyone can pay to get impressions.

That means that you now have to compete with people throwing money into the ring.

And money talks louder than your content I’m afraid.

But don’t panic.

There are things you can do to counter this. 

The most obvious one is to just make sure you’re creating awesome content, because at the end of the day, the algorithm will still favour great content that people want to consume in the newsfeed.

But there are a few more things you can do.

I’ll be sharing about them in upcoming newsletters and workshops, but today's is all about LinkedIn newsletters and why they can help you beat the algorithm.

People are fed up with AI generated posts, engagement pods and DM pitch slaps.

Trust is at an all time low.

Now with the new Boost feature, impressions have never been so low.
But I don't care.

Because I know the real value on LinkedIn is networking and relationship building.

I really didn't feel like posting today, or have anything that I really wanted to say.

I get those days sometimes, but usually I have content written in advance.

I'll give you the exact strategy to do it.

I created aa resources document for a workshop on how to use LinkedIn newsletters to combat falling impressions.

Impressions are tanking. We all know it.

But newsletters? They go straight to inboxes. No algorithm BS.

I know why your followers don't convert into leads.

And I know how to fix it.

LinkedIn is different from all other social media platforms in may ways...

• It's for networking
• It's great for business
• It can help you find a job
• It's the 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 platform
• Its users are the highest earners

All these things are true, but there's something else very different about LinkedIn that you need to understand if you want to use it to help grow your business.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀

It's great to have thousands of followers on LinkedIn.

And you should always aim to have as many as possible.

But connections are equally, if not more important.

That's because of the way the algorithm works.

Whenever you post something the algorithm runs a test with your 1st degree connections before anyone else.

So you have to be sure that not only does your content land with them, but they are also the right kind of person, i.e. your ICP.

If you don't have a high percentage of your ideal clients in your network, you may grow your following with random people, signalling to LinkedIn that they should show your content to more random people, instead of your potential clients.

And here's the most important part: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆. 

But 𝗡𝗢𝗧 your followers (unless they have open profile...)

You might think "so what?" 

Well, I'll tell you what... 🤓

Business is about relationships, not followers.

You can garner attention and communicate '1-to-many' through content.

And that goes some way to building a relationship.

But if you sell a high-ticket offer, you need to have 1-to-1 conversations.

So when your followers send you signals like:

• Subscribing to your LI newsletter
• Opting in to your lead magnets
• Commenting on your posts
• Engaging with your posts
• Inviting you to connect
• Viewing your profile
• Or following you

This is the exact moment 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 to start a real, human 1-to-1 conversation. 

It takes effort, but it's the fastest way to grow your business.

My first time speaking in public was a disaster.

I didn't just bomb. I crashed and burned.

I was asked to present in front of about 200 engineers and technicians at the company I worked for. 

The subject I was given didn't feel comfortable from the beginning, but still, I agreed to it, created my little slide deck and off I went.

The brief I was given by the organiser was "just have a discussion - get people talking and debating".

I had no idea whatsoever how to do that and I was nervous as hell.

On the morning of the event, I got into a conversation with one of the other presenters and I shared what I was going to cover.

He asked me to show him my slides, so I did, of course. Why wouldn't I?

He said they were great and it made him remember something he'd missed in his own presentation. That actually helped calm my nerves a little...

He was speaking right before me and to my horror, when he got up to present, I saw that he'd taken the main theme of my presentation and made it the main theme of his.

I can't really remember much about my presentation, except for that awful feeling of complete shame and embarrassment. 

I didn't present in public again for many years. But of course, if you want to progress in a company or in business, public speaking is something you need to master.

So I slowly got back on that horse and kept trying...

I don't think I'll ever feel like I've mastered it. But I don't get hung up on that either.

Last week I ran a workshop. 

I was expecting 20-30 people but over 100 showed up and they were all called Adrian Shiel.

That's not some kind of pun. The were actually named 'Adrian Shiel' in Zoom!

For a few milliseconds, that horrible feeling came over me that reminded me about that incident years earlier. 

But I caught it. I took it in my stride and laughed about it. Everything was fine.

Does this mean I've mastered public speaking?

Probably not, and probably never will. 

But I no longer get stressed out when things don't go to plan. 

So I guess I've mastered something within myself. I'll take that.

People are freaking out about the boost feature. 

But I’m laughing about it. Why? 

Because I know the real money on LI is in the DMs.

So I'm not that bothered by declining impressions.

People come here and post AI generated 'meh' posts and think that's going to get them clients.

But what gets overlooked is that it doesn't matter how good your content is (well, I guess good content helps 🤓).

If you don't know how to network and build relationships, it's always going to be a struggle.

Because it comes down to this:

People do business with people they trust.

So if you just focus on building trust, it will help your business grow.
