James Bond: My tailor - Savile Row.

I remember Sean Connery in Dr.No talking about his perfectly fitted suit but didn't know it was inspired by such a rich chapter of British history.

Savile Row, a street in London's Mayfair district since the 1730s, is globally renowned as the heart of bespoke tailoring for men and women. It took me years to understand this insight about ecommerce business and reshaped our entire strategy 🛍️ 

Most make the mistake of thinking brands are data poor, I was in the same boat and boy it was wrong. With the acceleration of AI, data is just everywhere. And some apps do a great job of going one step further by not just analysing the data but also providing insights.

The problem comes is these amazing insights are non actionable. It's because  either there is a separate platform/app needed to execute them or it requires a huge amount of time for executing them(operations bandwidth).

Everything boils down to, the most precious resource that most D2C brands don't have is - TIME !! Lead teams, think margins and ever increasing CAC's, the life of a growth marketer is far from a fairy tale.

It's shocking but most popular Shopify Personalisation Apps don't talk about ROI !!

The Shopify App Store has 7374 apps when you search for personalisation. Out of this, many of the top few apps boast of working with 50,000+ merchants. 

So I audited them from the eye of an ecommerce brand to see how I could really measure the VALUE they deliver in this age of AI.

The answer is - You cannot.

Stay with me and I will tell you why??

Most of these top apps on the name of personalisation help merchants with widgets like bestsellers etc that now a Shopify sidekick can do in a matter of seconds. 

Also there is no analytics as to what was the impact of that widget on the customer journey. Positive, incremental or negative. They all just talk about the overall contribution of sales v/s the ones from their widgets. Not good enough at all !!

So why would a merchant pay you $100 when you are at least not able to show a $500 worth of revenue from a segment that you engaged and it performed better compared to non engaged one.

The truth is, they launched and thrived in the non AI age and took a big share of the market. But I see this traditional approach being challenged everyday and that is the reason we are migrating many shopify merchants from the legacy players on to us.

Because at Cooee, we learned this the hard way. We changed our path to be able to test impact of every onsite personalisation element we add like widget, popup, bundles, video, upsell/cross sell, cart etc to showcase clear incremental revenue we can generate to help merchants calculate clear ROI that we deliver.

Is the value of penny saved the same as penny earned? 

At least in ecommerce, this is absolutely not the case and here is why....

With my experience of talking to thousands of D2C brands, I have not met a single one of them that pays equal importance to performance marketing and conversion optimisation.

Performance marketing is how much they spend on different channels to bring traffic to their website and they optimise for ROAS is how I would classify it as penny saved.

Whereas on the other hand conversion optimisation is where you end up spending the same amount of money on AD's but try to get more ROI from it, increasing their pennies earned.

Brands focus way way more to improve their ROAS but most pay little importance to CRO. 

The most common thing I hear from merchants when I speak to them about conversion optimisation, they say its not in their priority right now.

And when I ask them, have they stopped spending on Meta they give me that look.

Brands cannot control the ever increasing CAC so the saving pennies is not too much they can achieve from but delivering a 1-to-1 personalised post click onsite experience is totally in their control and this improves the conversions making them earn more.

Save + Earn more pennies is the only way ecommerce business can survive and scale 📈 🛍️ 🚀

How to deliver best Widgets on your Shopify store to boost conversions ?

Aim of any widget on a website is to group a certain number of SKU's that acts like a teaser for the visitors, leading them to specific product pages.

Here are these ways a ecommerce brand can ad's 
1) Shopify Native - Basic and static widgets like related products and recently viewed can be added on the site directly via Shopify.
Cons - every visitor will see the same widgets and products.

2) Widget Apps - Some apps on the Shopify App Store go much deeper and allow widgets to be populated with product recommendations, upsell/crossell and frequently bought products.
Cons - every visitor will see same widgets but with different product combinations.

3) Cooee Widgets - We look sessions/visits for each visitor and can personalise the products to be shown on widgets accordingly(new visitors/repeat customer) that can be shown at different scroll depths for AI powered product recommendations, upsell/cross sell, announcement bars, video widgets and more.

The two people quietly killing your Shopify store's personalisation SaaS and neither of them means to .......

We've seen this pattern more times than we'd like to admit.

Cooee delivers measurable conversion lifts. The data is clear. The results speak. And yet, adoption often stalls.

Not because of the product. Not because of the brand. But because of something far more human that I could have never thought of.

Two patterns we've learned to watch for:
1. The new growth hire who brings their old toolkit:
A new D2C growth lead joins. They're talented, driven, and ready to make their mark. But they've built their playbook on a different personalisation tool, one they used in their previous organisation or role. So even when Cooee is outperforming, switching feels like losing ground. Familiarity wins over performance, Every time.

2. The in-house Shopify developer who sees us as a threat:
Cooee doesn't just build pages, it makes every element on every page dynamic for every visitor. That's powerful for conversion. But for a developer whose value has been tied to building and maintaining static elements? It can feel existential. So static stays static and conversions quietly suffer.

We're not sharing this to criticise anyone. These are rational, human responses to uncertainty. But sharing this for every SaaS tool out there who work extremely hard to build the most amazing tech but face challenges with the human validation.

The fix? 
No clear answer. But one thing we have started doing is leadership alignment before rollout. And an honest conversation about what personalisation actually means for every role in the room.

At Cooee, we're learning to have that conversation earlier. And still trying to learn and figure a way out and optimise.
