I have managed technical communications for the CBASA for more than 15 years. Our biggest education initiative - Energy Efficient Clay Brick - achieved 15% reduction in the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions within 5 years.

It changed government and public awareness on energy-efficiency and passive design, changed the national building regulations to benefit clay brick, and resulted in clay brick regaining its market share as the most sustainable construction material for South African homes and small commercial buildings.

I write, design and publish technical manuals and guidelines on sustainable construction and building.  The website has 2 000+ educational articles and attracts around 40 000 visitors a month.

The CBASA is the professional body representing the brick masonry industry in Southern Africa. This is a government-regulated sector with environmental reporting requirements including carbon tax. The industry faces pressure from customers and consumer groups to improve soil and air quality, quarry rehabilitation and energy efficiency. 

With my strong background in construction and the environment, I research, write and produce technical manuals for engineers as well as plain language factsheets for homeowners who build with brick masonry and paving. I write web content, blogs, social media posts and press releases on creative topics like landscaping, architecture and interior design.

Group Communications Manager handling Strategy, Investor & Employee Communications (and the launch of a group-wide training intranet) across the M&R Group of 350 subsidiary companies.

I managed a small autonomous team, driving results by leveraging analytical problem solving as well as human psychology.

I joined the company as a specialist in advertising and publications. I wrote and edited numerous employee, training, investor and marketing publications over this exciting transition period in South Africa's history.  

I consulted to Group companies on media and marketing strategy as well as employee education and training using our intranet and LMS. With the internet becoming an important marketing medium, I designed, developed and maintained several websites for the Group and subsidiaries. 

1997-2001

At the end of 1996 I presented the concept of a group-wide intranet and Learning Management System to the Board and Divisional Excos. The objective of the intranet was to improve employee communication, engagement and upskilling in support of M&R's strategic restructuring initiative. The project was approved at the beginning of 1997 and I joined M&R's IT subsidiary to implement this major technology project.

I was proud to be an Exco (Executive Committee) member and a senior consultant with Knowledge Dynamics until it’s incorporation into M&R Corporate Head Office in June 2001.

As part of the Group's restructuring, I was offered the opportunity to manage many exciting Business Process Re-engineering projects in M&R subsidiary companies. My project portfolio focused on the use of technology to improve training, CRM, marketing and employee communication.

I joined Natal’s biggest industrial magazine in 1989 as Features Editor, producing both features and stand-alone publications. In 1990 I was appointed Editor and accepted a directorship and minority shareholding in the publishing company.

During my period of editorship, I introduced several new control systems and computerised many technical functions including mailing lists. This resulted in a reduced staff complement and decreased expenditure. Despite the economic downturn, the magazine maintained a steady 15% p.a. increase in turnover.
