Strategy & action alone do not create momentum.

It's the source beneath them.

“Be consistent.”
“Do not give up.”
“Continue, results will come.”

This advice isn’t wrong.
It’s incomplete.

High-level leaders usually don’t struggle with discipline or effort.

What they miss is something deeper:
Awareness of the real source of results.
Beneath strategy.
Beneath determination.
Beneath action.

- Your identity.
- Your beliefs.
- Your state.

Most leaders never go here.
Yet this is where performance, change, and momentum are actually shaped.

Because very often, the source of strategy and action is not clarity or alignment, but:
• Pressure
• Lack
• Proving
• Fear
• Nervous-system survival
• Exhaustion disguised as ambition

These drivers don’t create momentum.
They create resistance.
Friction.
Stuckness.

So when things aren’t working, the answer is rarely:
- more effort.
- more pushing.
- more strategy.

The most strategic move is often the opposite.

Slow down.
Recalibrate internally - before recalibrating strategy or team.

When outcomes aren’t landing, something deeper is usually asking to shift:
– A belief
– An identity edge
– A subconscious limit
– A suppressed emotion
– A body that doesn’t feel safe to expand
– A vision you’ve outgrown

Recalibrate here, and momentum follows.
Traction returns.
Movement becomes natural again.

So yes - be consistent.
Yes - don’t give up.

But first, recalibrate the inner drivers of leadership success.

Because when you shift internally, the external world responds fast.

Sometimes it’s the same actions.
With a different state.
Creating entirely different results.

And here’s what most leaders underestimate:
That field is shaped - consciously or unconsciously - not just by what leaders do, but by the internal state leaders operate from.

Neuroscience explains this through mirror neurons.
Humans subconsciously attune to the emotional and physiological state of others.

In simple terms:
people don’t hear leaders, they feel leaders.

Which means this:
Your internal state shapes the dynamics, behaviors, and performance of your organization.

A calm, grounded leader creates psychological safety - without trying.
A stressed, reactive leader creates tension - without noticing.

This is nervous-system leadership.

And this is what I see consistently shifts when leaders change the source:
– Behavior changes without being managed
– Conversations soften without losing clarity
– Accountability strengthens without fear
– Performance increases without burnout

Because culture doesn’t need to be forced, when leadership is internally aligned.

The real question isn’t: “How do I motivate people?”

It’s: “What internal state am I transmitting every day - already?”

Thriving culture and performance rise on psychological safety + trust + authentic presence + growth opportunities.

If you want a thriving culture, here are 10 moves you will need:
✅ Set/co-create the vision + priorities (people can’t perform in confusion)
✅ Ask for input and actually listen
✅ Address issues early (don’t let them grow)
✅ Recognize & appreciate effort - not only results (be specific)
✅ Give real ownership, not just tasks
✅ Create space for honest conversations (psychological safety matters)
✅ Model the standards you expect from others
✅ Show up human and vulnerable, not invincible
✅ Find out what people truly want (what drives them, what they care about)
✅ Create growth opportunities that match it (so they can evolve and stay engaged)

Yesterday, I was invited to participate a Singularity University event in Dubai, on exponential mindset & AI driven leadership.

My favorite was speech of John Sanei the futurist who  put one simple truth in the spotlight:

AI will replace intellectual intelligence.
Where we need to evolve is as humans.

Underlying the need to adapt by evolving From within - awareness, perception, EQ and being.


From the lens of my work, I see 3 key areas where leaders must evolve now to stay relevant for the future that unfold very fast:

1. State mastery
Your mind & body determines how you think, decide, and lead under pressure & what culture dynamic you shape.
A coherent state creates clarity, trust, safety & flow.
A survival state creates tunnel vision, stress & chaos.
Aligning & elevating your state is number one leadership superpower.


2. Identity & belief evolution
You don’t see the world as it is - you see it as you are, through the inner filters.
Your identity and belief system shape your perception, choices, leadership capacity.
Most leaders are running unaware on old conditioned program.
Evolving it expands what becomes possible for you, organization, business.

3. Intuition & inner wisdom
Data informs, but intuition decides.
In an AI-shaped world, accessing deeper inner knowing becomes the ultimate human advantage.
From here best strategies & unique approaches will come.

So the future isn’t about knowing more.
It’s about leading from a more evolved inner self.

And its already here and happening at speed.

So the question is:

Our closest relationships are never separate from our leadership.

They quietly influence how we decide, regulate ourselves, and show up.
Often beneath the surface.

In many ways, a family is an organization.
And partners are the leadership team.

The relational dynamic between partners shapes the wider system -  including children, culture, and emotional climate.

Cultivating this relationship is one of the most important areas of my own life.

I value friendship, connection, shared purpose, and shared values with my life’s partner.

I’m Jon Macaskill, a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness teacher, leadership coach, and resilience practitioner. Stop living in the “pursuit of happiness.” 

Happiness is fragile.
It rises and falls with circumstances.
It shows up when things go your way… and disappears the moment they don’t.

Peace on the other hand… that’s worth searching for… 

Peace when the noise doesn’t stop.
Peace when the pressure is on.
Peace when life refuses to cooperate.

That distinction matters.

Happiness is an outcome.
Peace is a capacity.

Shi Heng Yi is a Shaolin master and head teacher of Shaolin Temple Europe. His work is about discipline, stillness, and self-mastery …  training the mind the same way you’d train the body.

The core idea is simple:

If your sense of well-being depends on things going right, you’ll always be at risk.
If it comes from structure, awareness, and restraint… it holds when everything shakes.

Peace isn’t passive.
It doesn’t come from escaping stress.
It comes from being strong enough inside that stress no longer owns you.

So maybe the question isn’t:
“How do I become happier?”

Maybe it’s:
“What would it take for me to be at peace?”

That’s a different kind of freedom.

I’ve flown Southwest Airlines  for years.

And not casually. A lot.
Early mornings. Tight connections. Kids in tow. Last seat on the plane kind of flying.

One of the reasons I stayed loyal was simple: open seating worked.

It wasn’t fancy.
It wasn’t perfect.
But it was fast.

Now they’ve shifted to assigned seating and a front-to-back boarding process.

And honestly? It’s slower. Noticeably slower. MUCH SLOWER!

People in the front rows are stopping to hunt for overhead space… which is already full.
So bags get pushed back.
Traffic stops.
Everyone behind them waits.
Deplaning drags too, because the same bottleneck exists in reverse.

None of this is shocking if you’ve spent any time watching systems under stress.

The frustrating part isn’t the change.
It’s that this feels like a whiteboard solution, not a tested one.

Good systems get pressure-tested before rollout.
They get A/B tested.
They get piloted on select routes with real passengers, real carry-ons, real human behavior.

Because humans don’t behave the way process diagrams say they will.

This isn’t just an airline thing.
It’s a leadership thing.

When we roll out changes without testing them in the real world, we don’t just slow things down… we lose trust from the people who used to believe, “They’ve thought this through.”

Southwest built loyalty by being practical, efficient, and a little different.
I hope they’re still willing to listen to the data… and the people actually walking the aisle.

Sometimes the old way worked for a reason.

(I may need those two drinks!)

Most leadership problems start as distraction.

That’s where Will and I started this week with CEC  project managers and superintendents.

We talked about focus under pressure. Compassion when you’re exhausted. What stress actually does to the brain… and why managing attention is one of the most practical leadership skills there is.

And yes… we played with Legos.

Not for fun. For perspective. To slow things down, get out of autopilot, and see how we build together when the pressure is off.

What stuck with me most wasn’t the material. It was the engagement. The questions. The willingness to be honest about what’s hard and what needs to change.

Grateful for the trust, the openness, and the chance to work with leaders who are willing to pause long enough to lead better.

Some of the time, it’s totally not worth it… other times it is worth every second!

If you’ve ever hated a photo of yourself, this is for you...

You look in the mirror and think, “I’m doing okay.”
Then a picture shows up and suddenly your brain goes nuclear.

Most people assume the photo is honest and the mirror is generous.

It’s the opposite.

Phone cameras use wide-angle lenses. That lens slightly stretches whatever is closest to it (usually your midsection) and compresses what’s farther away. Shoulders narrow. Depth disappears. Definition fades. Add flat lighting and you lose the shadows that make muscle look like muscle.

Now layer this on top…

A mirror shows you movement and posture. You’re breathing. Standing tall. Subtly engaged. Alive.
A photo freezes you mid-exhale, mid-slouch, mid-nothing… and presents that single frame as reality.

Your nervous system doesn’t help either. When you look at a photo, your brain starts scanning for threat:
What’s wrong? Where’s the flaw? Why do I look like that?

You don’t do that (as much) in the mirror. You experience yourself as a whole.

Here’s the part that actually matters:

People in the real world see what the mirror shows… presence, energy, how you carry yourself… not a flattened still image taken under bad lighting from three feet away.

So if you’re training, taking care of your body, and you consistently feel decent when you look in the mirror, you’re doing great!

If you want something practical instead of motivational:
• Track progress by how clothes fit and how you move
• Use video instead of photos if you need visual feedback
• If you use photos, keep lighting, distance, posture, and time of day consistent

And maybe stop letting one bad frame override weeks of real effort.

Your body hasn’t betrayed you. That camera did.

This conversation wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t polished.
It was honest… and heavy… and hopeful all at once.

An 18-year-old sat with us and spoke about grief, kindness, and the quiet power of choice in a way most adults never do. 

About how pain doesn’t excuse cruelty. About how negativity doesn’t heal anything. About how one breath, one decision, one moment of humanity can change the direction of a life.

It reminded me of something we forget far too easily…
Everyone is carrying something.
Everyone is fighting a battle we can’t see.
And how we show up for each other actually matters.

If you’re a leader… a parent… a teammate… or just a human trying to do a little better in a culture that rewards comparison and pressure… this one is worth your time.

I want to take a minute to highlight my classmate and friend Jaimie Lusk, who is leading something genuinely special next spring.

From May 3–7, 2026, Jaimie will be co-facilitating Wild Resilience: Finding Inner Clarity Through Outdoor Adventure at Modern Elder Academy in Santa Fe.
She’ll be doing this alongside Rebecca Rusch — a 7-time world champion adventure athlete, Emmy-winning filmmaker, and someone who has spent her life using outdoor challenge as a path to growth, healing, and perspective.
I’ve watched Jaimie lead under pressure, listen deeply, and create spaces where people don’t have to perform or pretend they’re fine. Pair that with Rebecca’s lived experience in extreme environments and personal reinvention, and you get a retreat that’s grounded, thoughtful, and real.
This isn’t about crushing miles or proving toughness.
It’s about getting outside, slowing down, and using movement and nature to reset your nervous system and reconnect with what actually matters.
