How Unclear Nigerian Crypto Laws Almost Cost Investors Their Claims in FTX Bankruptcy

BlockLaw Consulting reports that the recent withdrawal of FTX’s motion to restrict creditor payouts in "restricted jurisdictions" was a near miss that must serve as a final warning to the Nigerian financial sector.

This motion—now withdrawn due to international outcry—sought to penalize creditors based on the perceived regulatory ambiguity of their home country. Nigerian investors were among those whose claims faced potential jeopardy, highlighting a critical systemic vulnerability:

The painful truth? When an international platform collapses, the lack of a clear, strong domestic regulatory framework means:

Nigerian investors’ rights are tragically subject to foreign bankruptcy courts (e.g., U.S. Chapter 11).

Unclear local laws are used as leverage to deny compensation to our own citizens.
