When your toxic micromanager is good at their job.

You can start at Infosys and end up at Microsoft.
You can start at Adobe and still crack Microsoft.
Where you start doesn’t decide where you finish.

I see too many people quietly disqualify themselves because of their first job, their college, or the logo on their resume.

They assume the starting point defines the ceiling.

It doesn’t.

Careers don’t move in straight lines. They move through learning curves, skill stacking, timing, and a few smart transitions.

Most strong profiles you see today didn’t start “perfect.” They started wherever an opportunity showed up.

Even I faced multiple rejections before becoming a product lead at Atlassian.

What matters more than where you begin is what you do next.

- Do you keep building depth in your craft?
- Do you take roles that stretch you instead of just paying you?
- Do you learn how to present your work clearly when the time comes to switch?

Big companies don’t only hire people who started at big companies.
They hire people who can show growth, consistency, and impact over time.

If you’re early in your career or sitting in a company you think is “too small” or “not good enough,” don’t underestimate yourself.

Focus on getting better. Focus on learning. Focus on making your work visible.

The doors open later, often when you least expect them to.

My daughter starts every call with her grandparents by asking: “ What gift did you bring for me?”

No hello.
No warm-up.
Straight to the point.

Meanwhile, in meetings, we do this and call it professionalism:

“Hope everyone’s doing well.”
“Let’s give it a couple of minutes.”
“Just adding some context here…”
“Quick alignment before we proceed.”

30 minutes later.
No decision.
Another meeting scheduled.

Kids ask the real question.
Adults hide inefficiency behind polite sentences and fancy words.

Maybe professionalism is just procrastination in a suit.

Hiring managers at Google love asking, “Why Google?” during initial screens. Here’s how to answer it to actually increase your chances.

Most candidates answer this question like fans.
They talk about brand, perks, smart people, or Google’s mission.

That answer feels safe, but it doesn’t help you.

Hiring managers aren’t asking this to see how much you admire Google.
They’re trying to understand how you think about your career.

A strong answer has three parts.

1. Start with you
Briefly explain what kind of work excites you now.
Systems at scale. Data-heavy problems. User-facing products. Platform work.
This shows self-awareness.

2. Connect that to Google’s work
Not the company as a whole, a problem space.
Search quality. Ads infrastructure. Cloud reliability. Android scale.
This shows relevance.

3. End with intent
Explain why this move makes sense at this stage of your career.
Just the next logical step.

Example structure (don’t memorize, understand it):
“I’ve been working on X problems, and I’ve realized I enjoy Y kind of challenges. Google operates at a scale where those challenges are real and constant, especially in Z. That’s why this role makes sense for me right now.”

That answer sounds grounded.
It sounds thoughtful.
And most importantly, it sounds honest.

Hiring managers aren’t looking for passion. They’re looking for clarity.
