MANUP? is a Men's Mental Health Charity that was founded in 2019 and formally became a Charity in July 2021. Its purpose is to de-stigmatize men's mental health and this is done via podcasts, videos, events, and more.

This is a role that I fully enjoyed I developed my skills working within a large team whilst also having the ability to lead in a management role. I was quickly promoted, having started as an assistant manager, within a few weeks I had shown my ability in this role and was responsible for managing a store where I increased the gross profit from 10k per week to over 35k in a short amount of time, this stayed consistent for well over 3 months. My success in this role led to me managing multiple stores in the region.

I manage and perform in  a professional function band that has performed across the UK and abroad at various private events and corporate functions. I mange the individuals within the band, deal with all the customer enquiries, delicate roles and work to individuals within the band and manage all aspects of the bookings. I deal with lots of customers and venues and ensure it is run to a very high professional standard. Starting in 2006 and continuing today I have many years of experience performing with lots of musicians and venues. I am able to use my own initiative, deal with sometimes difficult customers politely, and market the band continuously so it remains current and in demand within the current entertainment industry.

Managed a caseload of young people aged eleven to nineteen and families within the Early Help Team within Shropshire Council, which aimed to prevent young people being placed into the care system whilst dealing with a range of complex issues they may have or experiencing under the Strengthening Families Government Agenda.

These issues and work completed with young people and families included topics around  CSE, Sexual Health, County Lines , Parenting, Trauma, Domestic Violence, Substance Misuse, Exclusion from mainstream education, lack of positive role models, Behavioural, ASB, Mental Health Issues and MISPER forms and return home interviews aswell as setting up diversionary and positive activities when time allowed. 

During this time I also supported the Shropshire Care Council ensuring young people had a voice within the system in their weekly meetings and facilitated meeting with corporate parents (locally elected MP'S) who they could voice their concerns to and change the system so it met their needs.

Targeted Youth Support Worker

I have run and managed various youth projects in different communities within Shrewsbury, managed and supervised a small staff team which included an admin assistant. Delivered group work sessions to young people aged 11-19 on sports, arts, qualifications such as first aid, trips to do activities and helped groups of young people apply for money for activities and equipment for their local youth group. I have also worked closely with secondary schools , mentoring young people, delivering drop in CHAT sessions and supporting the pastoral teams.
During this time I also supported the Shropshire Care Council ensuring young people had a voice within the system in their weekly meetings and facilitated meeting with corporate parents (locally elected MP'S) who they could voice their concerns to and change the system so it met their needs.

I was recruited to deliver educational talks and interactive group work sessions to young people and adults in schools, colleges and youth and community groups . I also shadowed and assisted young people in making educational films around drugs and alcohol that were relevant to them and their peer groups at the time. This role involved me travelling all over Shropshire and using my initiative to deliver talks in some challenging spaces and areas where it had been identified that there were issues around substances and alcohol.

I worked with young people aged 16-19 delivering the life skills/E2E project ran by the YMCA at the East Street and Aylestone sites . I planned and  delivered sessions to groups of vulnerable adolescents experiencing homelessness, estrangement from family and learning difficulties. For some it was a second chance at education. My role included completing the necessary E2E paperwork necessary to access the funding to support the programme. During this post I was nominated by the young people I had taught and won an award for 'Making a difference' delivering the E2E programme. I was also part of a staff team that took a group of young people to Prague to a festival to celebrate the YMCA's work, some of these young people had never been out of Leicester before.

If You Would Not Stand in the Rain for Them, Please Do Not Foster ☔️

Let me start by saying this clearly.

There are thousands of extraordinary foster carers across the world who show up every single day with love, sacrifice and commitment.

This post is not about them.

This is about the uncomfortable conversations we keep avoiding.

In a recent Smash Life mentoring session, I asked a young girl about her dreams.

She said,
“I want to play football for a Sunday league team with my mates.”

I told her that was brilliant.

Then I asked what was stopping her.

Her answer hit me like a punch to the chest.

“When I asked my foster carers, they said they don’t want to stand in the wind and rain every Sunday, so I can’t go.”

I felt triggered instantly.

Because I have lived that feeling.

In the nineties, football was my escape. My identity. My therapy before I even knew what therapy was. Many of you know I support Liverpool Football Club.

That love started in our first kind foster home. Dave supported them. Like osmosis, it transferred to my brother Andy Smith and I. And when your life feels unstable, a club whose anthem is You’ll Never Walk Alone it means more than sport.

But when I moved into an abusive foster home, football became complicated.

It was used as control.

And when I think back, they never came to watch me. They liked rugby not football. 

I was that kid scanning the sidelines.

Other parents shouting encouragement.

No one there for me.

When I scored, there was no one to celebrate with.

When I lost, there was no one to process it with.

I begged other parents for lifts to away games. I offered my morning paper round money for petrol. I earned £7.50 a week. I remember being called a street urchin by a mate’s dad. No curiosity just another label. 

Do you know what message a child hears when no one shows up?

Not
“It’s cold.”
Not
“It’s inconvenient.”

They hear
“You are not worth the effort.”

And that message buries itself deep.

So this is my plea to fostering services, supervising social workers, managers and policy makers.

Please stop treating hobbies like optional extras.

They are not enrichment activities.

They are identity builders.
Confidence builders.
Attachment builders.
Memory makers.

If we are prepared to pay carers, train carers and assess carers, we must also expect them to emotionally show up.

You would stand in the rain for your own child.

Please expect the same standard for children in care.

Because when we say no to the football team, what a child often hears is no to belonging.

And for a child who has already lost so much, that is not a small thing.

If we are going to foster children, let’s foster their dreams too.

Stand in the rain. Show them they matter! 

It might be the most important hour of their week.
