Today’s virtual networking event brought together inspiring women entrepreneurs from over 20 countries.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Day was founded by entrepreneur and Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient Wendy Diamond, inspired after volunteering with the Adelante Foundation in Honduras, an organization providing microcredit to low-income women. 

Her work reminds us of the power of opportunity, community, and support in helping women rise.


From the poll results of today's event and also speaking with many international founders over the years, the biggest challenges expat women entrepreneurs face is marketing, finding clients and driving sales, especially while navigating life in a new country and building a network from scratch. 


Unlike locals, many expat founders have to create run their business while building their visibility, credibility, and connections.


I think another challenge is feeling icky about promoting themselves and their business, services, offers on platforms on LinkedIn.


So in honor of Women's Entrepreneurship Day, I invite women entrepreneurs in my network to introduce themselves in the comments and share a link to your business, services etc

Before I moved to the US, starting a business had never crossed my mind.

Stepping out of my comfort zone, navigating a new culture, rebuilding my career,  gave me clarity on my zone of genius, strengths and what I wanted to do professionally and sparked my entrepreneurial journey.

Open article: Why Expats can make Great Entrepreneurs by Nyna Caputi • 3 min read

I have to vent!! Sharing my experience with how lack of Cultural Intelligence (CQ), shows up in education and how it has impacted my family.

Last month, I had to fly to India unexpectedly because my mother had a fall. 

She lives by herself and there was no one else to help her.

As a homeschooling parent, my 8th grader had to come with me and continue her online classes through her US-based program as I couldn't leave her home alone in the US.


I was so proud of her as she did everything she could to keep up despite the jet lage, the time difference, being in another country, the stress of her grandmother being in hospital.

She stayed awake until 2:00 AM most nights to attend the online classes because of the 12.5 hour time difference.

The only class she couldn't manage was at 3:15 AM local time,
 
And she kept getting blocked from a required platform because it said she was “out of region.”


None of these challenges were due to lack of effort or responsibility. They were simply the reality of learning across borders during a family emergency.


But the school’s response?

A warning letter that she didn't meet her goals.
And mandatory weekly meetings with the teacher, my daughter, and me.


No empathy.
No flexibility.
No awareness of what global families actually face.

I’ve explained in emails and calls, multiple times how this was beyond our control.

 Every message has fallen on deaf ears. And now it's reached a point where they are demanding a meeting or my child will be asked to leave.
 
This experience has been a painful reminder of how a lack of CQ in education leads to:
• Inflexibility - refusing to adapt when a student faces unavoidable global challenges.
 • Unintentional discrimination - penalizing a child for being outside a geographic bubble.
 • Lack of empathy - ignoring context and real-life circumstances.

In a world where families are more mobile than ever, online learning should not be this rigid.
 
If anything, it should be the most adaptable system we have.

I’m sharing this because I am sure there might be expat and globally mobile families that run into similar roadblocks. 

And I truly believe educational institutions need to prioritize Cultural Intelligence not just for inclusion, but for basic effectiveness in a global world.

I have not tagged the school in this post but wondering if I should?

Running a business whether an expat or local is like riding an autorickshaw in Bangalore for the first time.
 

It’s equal parts thrilling and nerve-wracking

The sudden turns, the unexpected bumps, the chaos that somehow keeps moving forward. 

But if you hold on, trust the journey, and stay the path, you’ll find that every twist brings you closer to something worthwhile.
