A friend’s girlfriend worked at a dealership.

The deal?

I built mine from scratch, in Budapest.

Why?

Because the standard path didn’t fit what I actually wanted to learn.

So I redesigned the curriculum, packed my bags, and flew to Hungary.

That decision taught me something I’ve never forgotten:
If the default plan doesn’t match your goals, it’s your job to build a better one.

Hungarian goulash dinner by the open pit fire

I had $500 to my name.
And I used it to buy a house.

At 23, I wasn’t “established.”

I didn’t have a financial cushion.

But I had a childhood friend, Christopher Grobelny, a bit of courage, and just enough to make a move.

Together, we bought a modest rental property.

We learned how to handle repairs, manage tenants, and make a little go a long way.

That experience shaped how I think about money to this day.

You don’t need a massive shift.

For years, I thought I was setting smart goals.

Turns out, I was just avoiding failure.
I’ve loved rock climbing most of my adult life.

The challenge.
The discipline.
The problem-solving.

It teaches you how to focus, and how to fall.
Routes are rated by difficulty: 5.8, 5.10, 5.12…

For over 15 years, I stuck mostly in the 5.10–5.12 range.
And I had a pattern:

If I wasn’t nearly certain I could finish the climb on my first attempt…

I wouldn’t even try.
It felt like integrity.

Like “knowing my limits.”

But in a coaching session years ago, I saw the truth:

I wasn’t protecting my integrity.
I was protecting my ego.

That insight hit hard.

And it forced me to ask:

Where else in my life was I only choosing goals I already knew I could reach?

The answer?

More places than I’d like to admit.

That was the beginning of a shift, in how I set goals for myself, my family, my business, and yes, even my fitness.

And it’s influenced how I now coach clients through retirement planning, too.

Because for many high-achievers, retirement isn’t about spreadsheets.

It’s about identity.

And letting yourself imagine something new, even if you’re not 100% sure how to do it yet.
