Why cyber startups

Shouldn't go the Gartner route from day one


I get it. 

All of your competitors are there. 

In those Magic Quadrants and Hype Cycles. 


They've paid a hefty price for those mentions ($50k and up).

They've had many late-night calls with analysts. 

They've rewritten positioning decks and messaging frameworks. 

They've spent months promoting those reports. 

They've invested a lot of time and resources. 


But here’s the truth no one tells you...


Gartner isn’t built for early-stage cyber startups.


Why? 

Because:

→ Your product isn’t mature enough 
→ You’ll burn cash before achieving PMF (investors won't like that)
→ You might get stuck in a category that doesn’t fit (especially as your product matures)
→ Your messaging isn't finalized yet
→ Analyst calls do not replace customer feedback
→ Your ICP might shift drastically over time
→ You don't have the ARR to qualify 
→ Your integrations and APIs aren’t fully built yet
→ Your pricing models may pivot
→ You don’t have enough customers to show traction

And most importantly...

You risk building features your buyers don't need or care about. 


What should you consider doing instead?

→ Interview customers and use that feedback to fuel product road maps
→ Focus on LinkedIn founder-led storytelling to communicate vision 
→ Publish security research or threat intelligence reports to validate pain points further  
→ Build integrations that help make onboarding and product adoption smoother 
→ Refine your messaging and product differentiation  
→ Engage in technical webinars, panels, and roundtables
→ Attend niche events to strengthen relationships and partnerships 
→ Invest in early adopters and make them your advocates

This is what YOU NEED right now. 


Gartner becomes valuable once you've established: 

→ Clear differentiation 
→ PMF with real, paying customers and ARR
→ A strategic roadmap based on actual customer feedback
→ Measurable customer outcomes and success metrics

Until then, your focus should be on educating buyers. 

And solving real problems that matter to them.

Do that first.
