Turns out, most niched agencies didn't niche down. They started that way.

My research into 74 Australian agencies found the majority of niched agencies were built narrow from day one. They didn't cut services to get there.

So when full-service agencies are told to "just niche down," they're being given advice that makes sense for new agencies but doesn't account for the risks to established ones.

What replaces the revenue you walk away from?
What happens to the clients you're already serving?
What happens to the team you've built around those services?

You're shutting down your current business before you know if your new one will be any better.

But the niche-down crowd is right about one thing. Niched agencies do grow 1.7x faster.

Not because niching is a silver bullet, but because a higher portion of niched agencies have predictable lead generation in place.

When full-service agencies have predictable lead generation in place, they also grow fast.

Niching simply makes marketing easier.

When you're specific about who you're for and how you help them, your marketing is always relevant.

But you don't need to niche your agency to have precise messaging. Just niche your advertising.

Advertise the most impactful problem you've solved to your highest-value clients, while keeping your core business unchanged.

Attract clients with what you do best, and they'll keep you for everything else.

Once this channel is set up, then decide whether to niche down for operational efficiency or stay broad for flexibility.

That's how you get all the marketing benefits of niching without the revenue risk.

I spent $2,140 boosting a LinkedIn post.
It got 5 enquiries from 7-8 figure businesses.
All from one post that originally flopped.

After finishing our 2026 Agency Growth Report, I posted about it on LinkedIn.

The post got 5 report downloads.
Only 1 was an ideal prospect.
They didn't enquire.

Disappointing, but not surprising. LinkedIn shows your posts to your network, not your prospects.

My first instinct was to post more. But after completing the agency growth research, I knew better.

One finding was that high-growth agencies don't pull ahead by competing head-on. They find an edge.

Their latest edge: combining thought leadership content with paid ads to create a new, unsaturated channel.

So instead of posting more to get more downloads, I checked whether the post resonated.

It hit my minimum benchmark of 10+ likes, so I boosted it to my ideal clients (7-8 figure agencies).

Over the next 2 months, that same post got 141 report downloads before it fatigued.

80% were my ideal prospects.
5 submitted enquiries right after getting the report.

That's $428 per enquiry for $1M-$30M/yr businesses.

The content was the same. The reach wasn't.

So if you're posting quality content and it's not performing, it might not be the content.
It's that the right people aren't seeing it.

Post less. Boost what resonates.

Advertising your services works when competition is low.
But commoditises you when it's high.

And for Australian agencies, competition has skyrocketed.

From 2015 to 2025, the total number of Australian agencies grew by 380% (2,187 to 8,373).
For contrast, Australian businesses grew by 29% (2.12M to 2.73M).
That's a 13x difference.

So agencies adapted.
They went from advertising their services: "We run Meta ads."
To advertising their outcomes: "We'll 5x your leads with Meta ads."
To advertising their results: "We 5x'ed SP Financial's revenue."

But now, prospects know every established agency has good results.
So results are no longer a differentiator. They’re a requirement.

High-growth agencies have realised this.

So they’ve stopped advertising what they do.
And started advertising how they think.

Because once a prospect buys into your thinking, buying your services becomes the next logical step.

But prospects don't value cheap insights.

So don't share tips and tricks on "best practice".
Share the hard-won improvements you've made to it.

Because when a prospect is looking for a better way to solve an old problem:
E.g. "We're not getting enough online enquiries."

And every agency is advertising the same old solution:
E.g. "You need a conversion optimised website."

You prove you're a strategic thinker by advertising a new one:
E.g. "Don't start with a full website. Start with a landing page and Google Ads - it'll pay for the website."

Make your insights known, and prospects will pay you to implement them.
