The Deck 747

Sharing my passion for aviation as a flight sim instructor, giving amazing flying experiences to aviation enthusiasts of all ages. The sim is built from the entire top deck of ex-British Airways Boeing 747-400 registration G-BYGA, tail number 1190. You’ll never forget the first time you land a 747, and I’m so lucky to get to share so many people’s “first” moments with them!

Following acquisition of Altran by Capgemini, I was responsible for leading pre-sales and innovation activities supporting a global rail and digital transformation team of 3,000+ people across North America, Europe, North Africa, and India.

Reporting to the sector Global VP and partnering with clients at C-Suite level, I developed the Intelligent Industry strategy for rolling stock, focussing on implementation of intelligent design and manufacturing systems, vehicle validation and maintenance.

I co-ordinated diverse capability groups across the Capgemini organisation to deliver compelling and coherent service offers and associated business / financial models, with specific focus on :

 - Digital engineering and analysis, including design automation
 - IoT, machine learning, data & analytics
 - Mobile & edge computing, 5G, cybersecurity
 - Virtual and augmented reality
 - Digital twins

Supporting complex bids and early-stage client partnering activities, I defined the technical and operational delivery strategy for large, multi-geography and multi-disciplinary programmes. This required me to break down silos between teams in different regions to create high-performing distributed and virtual teams.

I succeeded in unifying disparate capabilities across four continents, launching new services from scratch, and providing double-digit improvements in sales revenue.

Global Solutions Architect - Intelligent Industry (Rail)

Altran

Responsible for defining and delivering the engineering, technology, and innovation strategy for train design and development activities, across Altran's global rail teams of c. 1,300 people.

Responsible for expanding Altran UK's offering by setting up and running a world-class rail engineering consultancy business.  With full responsibility for P&L business performance, engineering quality and delivery, I led the creation of the UK business from scratch, achieving revenues of 3x target in the first year.

I then initiated and led a push to improve global collaboration across Altran's rail engineering teams in Europe, North Africa and India, and within our clients' global operations.  Since 2017, this has secured a 14% compound annual growth rate (revenue) and margin growth of 5-6% annually, with team size growing by 55%.  In turn this has led to additional opportunities, the highlight being award of a 5+ year, £multi-million framework agreement from a new infrastructure client in 2019.

Other key activities and achievements include:
 - creating and implementing technical and project governance frameworks;
 - creating and implementing capability development plans (talent, methods and tools);
 - recruitment of the UK team, including implementing a leadership team reporting to me;
 - global business development with multiple clients, interfacing with key account management teams to identify and secure new opportunities;
 - expansion of use of Altran's expertise in novel technologies, principally digital and automation solutions, resulting in quicker, lower cost and more effective outcomes for clients' major projects;
 - ongoing definition of Altran's global offer for rolling stock and infrastructure engineering services;
 - improved collaboration between Altran's global teams, increasing deployment of skills from one location across multiple client geographies, improving global revenues and securing new opportunities.

Head of Rail Engineering (UK)

Atkins

Project Manager for design of Overhead Line Equipment and associated civil engineering for electrification of the Midland Mainline between Bedford and Sheffield.  Responsible for client engagement and change management with the main construction contractor and Network Rail, and leadership of multiple design work package managers to ensure engineering deliverables supported the prime contractor's supply chain readiness and construction schedule.  Also responsible for leadership of the core project team including planners, cost engineers and document control.  Further responsibilities include improvement of project management methodology and project assurance activities, including implementation and development of agile PM and visual management techniques / Kanban boards.

Project Manager, Midland Mainline Electrification

Responsible for oversight and governance of a £multi-million portfolio of nuclear component engineering consultancy projects, covering new product design and substantiation, safety analysis / safety cases, plant life extension, and maintenance studies. I provide overall direction for the programme to meet multiple stakeholders' expectations, financial management, risk and issue management. Also responsible for business development, production of proposals for new projects, and development of project management skills and processes across multiple teams.

Programme Manager, Nuclear Component Engineering

Rolls-Royce

Providing functional leadership, including deployment of enhanced reliability management capabilities into individual engine projects (tasking areas). Also responsible for governance of reliability assurance and in-service event management processes, across the Rolls-Royce civil large engine (RB211 and Trent) fleet.

Led activities to define and implement major engine upgrade programmes delivered by a global Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) network, including coordination of engineering design change and supply chain readiness.

Acted as an internal and external consultant leading multiple continuous improvement activities, working with global engineering, supply chain and business management teams and their leaders, and key airline customers, to map and improve processes and develop a continuous improvement culture from a standing start.

Chief of Project Zero - Civil Large Engines

The Rolls-Royce RB211-524 engine is a three-shaft high bypass-ratio turbofan that powers all variants of the Boeing 747 aircraft and the Boeing 767-300. The G/H -T variant was introduced in 1998 with improvements to compressor, combustor and turbine technologies developed for the Trent 700 engine (powerplant for the Airbus A330 aircraft).

As Technical Services Reliability Lead, I am a core member of the Product Team that provides leadership and direction across all aspects of the engine type .  I define and execute effective strategies to resolve customer issue, requiring me to influence the activities undertaken across multiple internal functions and external organisations, including key strategic customers.

I have successfully led technical personnel through complex engineering investigations, and ensured key customer satisfaction drivers have the necessary visibility within the multi-function project and service delivery teams to ensure they are delivered in line with customer expectations. I have successfully applied this customer-focussed approach when taking the lead on key product strategy issues, and when required to influence day-to-day service delivery issues.

I also have significant interaction with repair and overhaul (MRO) providers, having defined the maintenance / modification policies for Rolls-Royce lease engines and customer engines under TotalCare agreements to achieve the optimum balance between operational and cost effectiveness.

Technical Services Reliability Lead, RB211-524

The Trent XWB is the world's most efficient civil turbofan engine, optimised for the Airbus A350 XWB aircraft family and proven through extensive engine testing.  It is the fastest-selling widebody engine.  It is a three-shaft engine built on 80 million flying hours of Trent engine family in-service experience, also incorporating state of the art technological advances in aerodynamics, thermal efficiency, materials and manufacturing methods.

As Integrated Programme Team Leader within the Installations and Controls business, I was responsible for day-to-day project management of the design-make-validate-support process for the electronic control system sensor components.  Also responsible for supply chain production readiness processes, this role involves significant contact with external suppliers and risk-and-revenue-sharing partners.  I have achieved many successful programme outcomes in this role, largely as a result of building close working relationships with extermal parties based on integrity and mutual respect, and in sharing a common vision.

Integrated Programme Team Leader, Trent XWB

I led a team of up to nine direct reports, responsible for effective management of in-service issues affecting core turbomachinery (fan, compressor, combustion and turbine components) across the installed fleet product range of Trent and RB211 widebody engines.

I was responsible for team members' continuing personal development, task prioritisation and resource allocation, and technical leadership. I personally led complex investigations into in-service events and frequently represented the company with external airline customers and airworthiness authority personnel.

Team Leader, Service Engineering

Responsible for hardware validation and verification activities for state-of-the-art "hot end" turbine components for the Trent 900 and later Trent 1000 engine types, powerplants for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 aircraft respectively.  I defined and implemented validation and verification strategies in complex and often ambiguous circumstances, delivering to very tight timescales and interfacing with airframe customers and the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA).  I successfully integrated the work of world-class mechanical and aerothermal technology experts, design, manufacturing, test and measurement, and production operations areas to support engine certification and experimental flight test activities.

New Product Development Engineer

Undertook a range of 10 - 12 week training attachments across different engineering functions within the Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace and Naval Nuclear Marine sectors.  This provided a thorough grounding in the organisations' structure and working practises and the complex interactions between different functions, which has proven to be an excellent foundation for my subsequent career.

Graduate Trainee

After 20+ years leading technical teams in the aerospace, rail and nuclear sectors, I've now come full circle and back to where my passion truly lies - aviation. 

I'm currently training full-time for my commercial pilot's license, while sharing my love of aviation as a 747 simulator instructor in a unique setup: a complete flight deck salvaged from a retired British Airways jumbo jet

What draws me to aviation isn't just the thrill of flying. It's more than that: it's about the people - professionals who share my commitment to the highest standards, who understand that excellence isn't a goal that just happens, it's something that can never be taken for granted - and requires us all to support and inspire one another. Having spent decades in roles requiring rapid problem-solving in safety critical environments, I know this first hand.

It's been quite a journey. Starting at Rolls-Royce where I brought three new Trent engines into service, supporting fleet operations and MRO activities as a Compliance Verification Engineer, to leading fleet reliability programs with major airlines, and finally to managing complex projects in nuclear and rail - I've always gravitated toward safety-critical operations where lives depend on quick thinking and getting things right first time.

I'm at my absolute best in the flight deck, be it a two seat Cessna or the 747 simulator. But I have to say, nothing beats the feeling of helping a customer nail their first landing in a jumbo jet, taking away amazing memories, and inspiring younger children to pursue a flying career.

I'm on track to complete commercial pilot training by September 2025 and am also available immediately for flexible contract work in flight operations, safety, or maintenance roles. I understand the challenges commercial air operators face, and know that there's always more work than people to do it.

Based near East Midlands Airport and willing to travel, I can offer my expertise on a flexible basis to help you deliver your priorities more quickly and cost-effectively than a permanent hire. My unique blend of technical knowledge, leadership experience, and hands-on aviation background means I can fit in straight away - especially in a safety, maintenance or operations role.
