I'm in the middle of helping to steer a significant digital transformation initiative at Winnebago Outdoors. We're upgrading the ERP system to a new platform consisting of Microsoft D365, Salesforce, and the Teamcenter systems.

The Release Train Engineer (RTE) role is collaborative, involving deep engagement with the Agile Release Train (ART), a composite of agile teams working in concert to achieve a shared objective. Here's a closer look at what an RTE does day to day:

I once wrote an HR policy that still makes me cringe.

Base44

AI layoffs are not always what they seem. Some are smoke and mirrors, not science fiction come to life.

Over the past two years, companies have started blaming AI for job cuts. The numbers look dramatic. Layoffs attributed to AI jumped from 4,600 in 2023 to 55,000 in 2025. That is a 12fold leap.

But here is the catch. Not every layoff with an AI label is actually about AI. Sometimes, it is just a new costume for an old story: cost cutting.

Real AI transformation leaves fingerprints. You will see faster cycle times. Fewer errors. Higher throughput. Customer outcomes that actually improve. Roles get redesigned, not just removed.

If you do not see those changes, question the narrative. Ask for proof that AI is really doing the work. Do not settle for buzzwords.

Here is how to spot the difference:

Look for evidence of process redesign. Are workflows actually changing, or just headcounts?

Check for measurable improvements. Are there real gains in quality, speed, or customer satisfaction?

Ask if the operating model has shifted. Are teams working differently, or just smaller?

If the answer is no, you are probably looking at AIwashing, not transformation.

The future of work is being built right now. But it is up to us to separate signal from noise.

If your AI can spot a typo in a resume, why can it not spot its own bias?

Most HR leaders trust their algorithms to be neutral. But AI is only as fair as the data and decisions behind it.

Here is the uncomfortable truth: bias is not a bug. It is a feature, unless you actively design against it.

DEI is not a checkbox. It is a daily practice. Especially when your people operations run on code.

Start by interrogating your data. Who is missing? Who is overrepresented? If you do not know, your AI does not either.

Bring diverse teams into your AI projects. Not just for optics. For real, lived experience that shapes better outcomes.

Build feedback loops. If your AI makes a questionable call, do not shrug. Investigate. Adjust. Repeat.

Belonging is not a report metric. It is how people feel when they interact with your systems.

If your AI is not building trust, it is building walls.

While most people her age were shopping for crisis therapists, she was out hunting for a second chance.

No grand speech, no big sales pitch. She walked in and admitted she was scared. She owned her doubts. She gave us the unedited, messy version of her story, not the polished LinkedIn highlight reel.

She wasn't trying to impress anyone. Not networking, no secret agenda. Just being brutally real.

We deployed an AI hiring tool, expecting fairness and speed. Instead, it exposed our messiest secrets. Here's what we did next.

"Ethical AI" gets tossed around like some secret sauce only for big tech and fancy boardrooms.

Let me break it for you, straight from the middle seat of HR chaos.

We thought we were geniuses by launching an AI-powered hiring tool a couple years back. The pitch? 
Less bias. More efficiency. Recruiters spending time being human again, not lost in a sea of resumes.

Perfect on paper.

But a few weeks in, something smelled off. We noticed our AI was quietly ghosting stacks of strong candidates. 
Mostly folks with nontraditional backgrounds, sideways career paths, the kind of profiles that don't fit a neat box.

All the buzzwords about "reducing bias"? Not so much.

Why? Because the AI did exactly what it was supposed to do: learn from old patterns. 
Our data wasn't evil. It was just messy and full of blind spots. 
Garbage in, garbage out.

What did we actually do about it?
- Hit pause, immediately.
- Built a diverse review team 
- Forced transparency.
- Made every AI output explain itself so you didn't need a PhD to get it.

Uncomfortable truth: 
Your AI will copy your worst habits faster than your best ones. 
It's not a moral compass. It's a mirror.

So here's the reality check: 
Ethics isn't a quick checkbox at launch. 
It's the work. It's the messy, uncomfortable, necessary part. 
It's in who's at the table questioning assumptions, who speaks up when something looks wrong, and who refuses to let "default" become destiny.

First steps: 
Start by cleaning your data and challenging your own track record. 
Don't let the algorithm carry your baggage further.
 
Tag someone who's brave enough to handle the mess before they hit go.

Early in my career, I relied heavily on reports and metrics, assuming logic would drive progress. It didn't. Engagement was limited, and initiatives stalled.
