The stacked panel of Shep Moyle (moderator), Pat Gouhin, Neil Bagchi, and Juan Carlos Pacheco talked about how startups can make stacks of cash. They brought up the differences between angels and VC, the do's and don'ts of interacting with investors, getting in front of the right people, due diligence, and much much more. 

I was excited because 10+ UNCW students were in the room. Heck, if they are getting to these kinds of event as juniors and seniors, they're way ahead. The things learned can truly catapult their ideas forwards, and hopefully keep their business operating in Wilmington too!

🌎🎤 Global Entrepreneurship Week Continued... 
From UNCW Freshmen who may not know what they want to study, to a student business pitch competition, 1 Million Cups, and more, the week is crazy busy. But, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

Tuesday evening, Wakenia George had me present to her UNI class at UNCW, my alma mater. For those who don't know, UNI classes are mainly freshmen, and your taught a variety of topics about the university, major choices, life skills, etc. Though not my normal space inside the Cameron School of Business at UNC Wilmington in a marketing or business class, it was still a lovely class. Heck, maybe by hearing me ramble for 45 minutes some of these students may want to pursue business?! Thanks to Lydia Thomas and Heather McWhorter for setting this up, and organizing local entrepreneurs to cover over 100 classes in Wilmington. 

Directly following the UNI class session, I wandered over to the UNCW Entrepreneurship Club Pitch Competition. Thanks to Jim Roberts with NEW for sponsoring that event. Christian Pardue, RN was there to represent NEW and let students know about the NEW event that's coming up this Thursday. It was also energizing seeing Jamie Stalfort, EDFP, and Seth Butler again. Though I was not an official judge, the students' ideas were all great. I could truly hear the passion for the industry in a few students voices as they spoke, and that was really cool. Some very new idea and transformative ideas too!

Then, immediately following the pitch competition (I couldn't stay to find out who won the $1,000), I went to cheer on UNCW Basketball as they whooped up on ECU.

On Wednesday morning, as per usual, we had 1 Million Cups Wilmington. This morning we had Danny Tangredi with Wake N Bake Donuts, and Tracy (Stevenson) Harrison with Keep Your Hands Off Me (nonprofit) present. Thank you to Heather Marino for helping get Tracy on our schedule! It was enlightening to hear what both businesses are doing, what events they are hosting, and what they are doing to grow. We had over 58 people attending 1MC person, and 12 watch live on Zoom. That's crazy! 70 people in the small city of Wilmington for a weekly event. 

The week is not over! There are plenty of events happening later today, Thursday, and Friday. The UNCW CIE is hosting tons of events. Jim Roberts with NEW is having "the best event on the globe," on Thursday. It's called the Recipe Of The Raise and will focus on unlocking investment for startups. Girard Newkirk and Tracey Newkirk with Genesis Block are hosting events for GEW too! Check them out!

🎭🩺🍺🏠 All of "Wilmington's Most Intriguing People" across theater, medical, hospitality, and software had mentioned ENTREPRENEURSHIP. 

What a wonderful morning at the Greater Wilmington Business Journal Power Breakfast, even though it was on a Wednesday morning (during 1 Million Cups Wilmington). It was fun being able to get new business owner, Kyle Bullock in the room to start his networking journey. Thanks to Matthew Coleman for helping us out there!

The morning was the perfect mix of lone speakers, and panels. 

To start us off, Shane Fernando of the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts uncovered the developments of the state's oldest theater. It's also to make Thalian the most contemporary too! Their mix of space updates, and new programming will bring in more and more people into the city, and theater. 

Next was Umar Bowers, MD of Dawson Med. He unveiled staggering statistics in the medical space. Mainly the 89% churn rate for CMAs (I think those are the right letters). No industry can survive with that. Luckily UNCW and CFCC have phenomenal nursing programs to help strengthen our community. 

Then it was Tara English, who talked about the Brooklyn Arts Social District. I'm a big fan of branded areas or districts within cities. Wilmington still has some work to do in that front, but is making good strides. An example being the Brooklyn Arts District. The pilot program went extremely well, and I'm glad to see that businesses are flourishing because of it. 

To start the panels section, Sophie Dagenais, and Shannon Winslow, MBA of the Endowment talked about the over $1.2B being allocated here in the area. Some of the money has been going to great causes already, but this is just the beginning. They mentioned entrepreneurship and innovation in basically every sentence which I loved. I still think locals haven't thought of bigger and better dreams to what could be done. 

To wrap up the morning, Ben Currin and Dave Sweyer of Vantaca talked about being a unicorn. They discussed the ins and outs of the hurdles associated with it, AI, and talent. Ben said that "they have no plans for leaving Wilmington." And Dave said that "the Wilmington entrepreneurial community still can be strengthened." It was also great to see some of the other Vantaca crew in the room too Erin Martin, and Lisa Leath, SHRM-SCP. 

What a way to start the morning, full of close business friends, local leaders, and so many inspiring thoughts. 

I had the privilege to sit at the UNCW CIE Table with Randall Johnson, Stuart Borrett, Keri Marshall, Lydia Thomas, Sonya Peele, Carson B. Jackson, and a few others.

🔶📂 For UNCW CIE Entrepreneurship Day, a part of Global Entrepreneurship Week I had the chance to step into some classrooms and talk about marketing, business management, and following passions. 

This morning I presented to the Honors Hospitality and Tourism Management class at New Hanover High School. It was fun to not only talk about entrepreneurship generally, but also be specific and break down management practices. 

The students asked a lot of thoughtful questions. And, it seems like a few students are starting up some companies as well. So cool!

🦅🌊 Seahawks helping other Seahawks soar. Thanks to Xander Barrett for inviting me to come network with UNCW business students during a PSE event. I was able to chit chat with juniors and seniors who are studying HR, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. 

Making a fun, inclusive space for these students to network with business pros is essential. I've heard that more and more students are scared of networking because they don't know what they want to do out of college, or don't have something lined up. BUT THAT'S OKAY! 

Humility and asking for help are important things to learn in business too. It could also open a door for a student to pursue their own entrepreneurial dream.  

It was great seeing Isabel Barnett, Brian Coughlan PE BSEE MSEE MBA CEM CEA CEP, and Adrian Monte who were there to interact with students too.

Got to see Jamie Stalfort, EDFP for the second night in a row, but also some of my old professors Andrew Woolum, and Brian Kinard. I loved catching up with them.

During the night I was able to let Carolyn Landenberg and Heather Evans in on a little marketing secret, the front camera on the iPhone is much better than the selfie camera. I was also really intrigued to hear about Paul Pascarosa's Swamp Walks. Maybe I'll be able to help him document those soon over video.... 

It was great catching up with lots of familiar faces. I hope to see the new acquaintances at future events too!

🦪🌅 Nothing makes me go quiet more than trying to stuff my face with oysters. Especially the focus needed to open an oyster and not cut yourself. 

Actually, there was plenty of room for conversation during the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Annual Oyster Roast. You could either hunker down at a table and chat with the folks there, or you could wander around find another table with oysters. A second way to network was in line at the bar. 

This may not make the final cut of photos, but I did flag down Madeline Gray to get a shot of me slurping an oyster. Photographers know that getting pictures of people eating ins't the most glamorous. Most people really don't want their picture taken mid bite. So, I am more than happy to assist a photographer get some fun shots that they may not otherwise get.

Huge thanks to Mark Littlewood for being such an incredible host. He brought the energy (and spiciness) in the morning, midday, an evening. Your team is great too!

Claire Lew kicked us off in the morning. What a phenomenal morning keynote. I have over 4 pages of notes. Her take on the managerial side of AI inclusion was great. I hope to use the strategies you gave as I grow my team.

Up next, the dynamic duo Mark & Chika Emebo. I always see their content about traveling to different conferences around the world. Their discussion on generational diversity within the workplace was needed. I often think about that through the lens of marketing, but now I need to address it from the managerial side too. There were tidbits of sales in there, active listening, and most importantly, being open to constant learning.

Then it was Joel Gascoigne from Buffer. I really look up to him as an entrepreneur because he's in the marketing software space. Also, because I've actually heard about and used his product before. How cool is that?! I thoroughly enjoyed how vulnerable he was about the growth and decline of his company. You are leading a role model-like company, and I'm still in awe that we got to talk in person. 

Then it was Amir Salihefendic of Doist. He went into the in's and out's of AI, LLMs, and the specific products that they've created / sell. It was a refreshing mixup in-between all of the managerial talks. 

I sat at Georgiana Laudi and Claire's tables for the roundtable discussions. I really just enjoyed their energy. In my previous video, Gia talked a lot about GTM. Again, hanging out around all of these cool marketing / software people was a blessing. She also told me to read the book "The Mom Test." I just bought it on Amazon.

📢 📰📱 A meeting of the marketing minds! John Walker with Chirp PR and I grabbed lunch the other day. He is newer to town, coming from Atlanta. Seems like he is doing a phenomenal job at connecting with local pros already. More and more high level professionals are moving to Wilmington. 

We chit chatted about PR, social media, software companies, non-profits and some other stuff too. These kinds of meetings are great because:
- Meeting newer pros in town is always fun (coffee, lunch, beer, etc)
- Seeing if there's any opportunity for collaboration
- An exchange of connections to help each other grow

🎄 Peppermint martinis, cran-apple donuts, and miniature gingerbread house making kits were just some of the ideas these students had last night. Yesterday I had the opportunity to judge some projects for the UNCW AMA Chapter. Huge thank you to Alexandra Krallman for having us. 

I was joined by a stellar judging crew, Casey Rosett, Kevin McClary, and Christine Roz Williams. 

I thoroughly enjoy giving back to students at UNCW, my alma mater. 

These marketing students have bright futures. Putting them in situations like this is key to helping them get ready for the workforce. To end the night, we spent some time chit chatting and answering and burning questions the students had too. 

It was a great time, and now I'm REALLY in the mood for Christmas.

🇺🇸 Happy Veterans Day. 
The "Chad" CrossFit workout is a tribute to Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson, who died by suicide in 2019. It is a physically and mentally demanding workout designed to honor his service and raise awareness about veteran suicide. 

Workout Details: 1,000 weighted box step-ups. Men: 45 lb ruck, Women: 35 lb ruck, and Box height: 20 inches. 
* I used a 20lb vest in the video

The purpose of the workout Chad, like many other memorial workouts are to honor the hero’s memory, raise awareness about veteran suicide (or another important cause), and to challenge athletes physically and mentally. 

It was a long challenge! But, it doesn’t come close to what our veterans have been through. I wil gladly suffer a little bit in memory of our heros.

⌚️ I joined the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce years ago because they were starting a Young Professionals Council. Now, North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) is doing the same, but across the whole state. 

I value community heavily in business. It's groups like this that really give space for young pros, and young entrepreneurs to be heard, meet local leaders, and network. Which in turn, can impact city, regional, and state legislature, events, and insights. 

Heck, without the Wilmington Chamber YPAC events, I wouldn't be able to tell our City and County leaders that Wilmington is the #1 Small City for Startups in The World. City and County leaders did not know this info previously. I could tell by their jaws dropping to the floor. I'm still working on my in-person advocacy skills. I usually just take things to LinkedIn. 

I'm beyond excited to see how this network takes shape. I've applied to be on their Leadership Committee as well. I'll let yall know of more info as it unravels.

There needs to be a better way.

🛌 💤  Your day really starts the night before. By getting good rest, you're setting yourself up for what's to come.

It's not work, then rest in that order. 
That leads to burnout and stress. 

Entrepreneurs love the little things. The small, seemingly unimportant things that really help in the long run. This is that. Strategic rest.

As an entrepreneur I hate the thought of not working on the business. 

So sometimes I have to contextualize things for it to click in my head. Rest is actually helping you better perform in the moment, now. It's future thinking. You're doing everything you can to get ahead of the competition.

🧪 I've found that marketers, sales pros, and entrepreneurs are "constantly" doing industry research. They do it even when they don't think they're doing it (Ie: A marketer scrolling on social media calling it "work"). 

They often do industry, content, and competitor research the following ways:
- Reading email newsletters
- Reading articles, publications, and news
- Reviewing websites
- Scrolling social media
- Using ChatGPT or another AI platform

As a digital marketer I not only try to stay up-to-date on my own industry, but the industries of the companies that we serve too. I often get trigger happy when subscribing to email publications. I review marketing emails that cover SEO, events, influencers, photography, videography, and a few other topics daily. It's a lot! 

Other industries have the same amount of info too. Well, they may change a bit slower than marketing (which shifts by the second), but they still have tons of news. As a marketer handling accounts in IT/Cybersecurity, Construction, Restaurant/Hospitality, Flooring, Real Estate, and Interior Design, I need a single place to ingest relevant and timely info that I can then use in marketing, sales, etc. 

Good research creates the best ability to sell, or create. 

That's why I created Phrayz. A space for marketers, sales pros, and entrepreneurs to do proper research, setting them up for success.

I'll be honest, we're still fixing some bugs. But, the MVP is out there, and professionals are getting the picture of what we're building. Currently we have 85 beta users (yes, the software is free to use right now).

📞  Story time! I almost just sold a business on marketing services from them dialing the wrong number. 🤯

I have a business line that goes to my cell phone. I often get calls from people looking for someone else. Sometimes it's a misdial too. 

Often times with wrong number dials, everyone rushes to get off the call. 

This time I threw a hail mary. Before he hung up, I tried to sell him on marketing services. 

His response was, "you can do marketing for radiology."  And my follow up was, of course.

He then hung up. 

Well I at least I tried. I need to get in the habit of that more....
