Good news for AI is now bad news for the stock market.

It's the opposite narrative compared to what drove stocks to record highs over the last three years.

So far in 2026, the Magnificent 7 have lagged the rest of the market, Big Tech can't keep up with boring stocks like Costco and Walmart, and the AI trade has been a laggard. 

Even Nvidia's massive earnings beat couldn't push its stock price higher.

Nvidia is set to report earnings as the only Magnificent 7 stock up more than 1% to start the year.

While its mega-cap peers have succumbed to the software and AI sell-off — jolted by this week’s viral bearish essay from Citrini Research — Nvidia remains on solid footing.

This divergence makes the results even more high stakes.

The market, as it tends to do each quarter, will read Nvidia’s earnings as a referendum on the entire AI economy.

To be sure, Nvidia has made a habit of crushing Wall Street estimates that predates ChatGPT.

The company has beat revenue estimates for 27 consecutive quarters, according to data from Bespoke. 

It’s also surpassed earnings estimates for 12 quarters in a row.

Even though the company remains 9.1% below its record high, its relative strength against the rest of the Magnificent 7 is a testament to its longstanding dominance.

Nvidia reports earnings as the only Magnificent 7 stock up more than 1%

Artificial intelligence went from Wall Street’s favorite theme to the latest systemic risk.

Two months ago, AI momentum was so robust that skeptics couldn’t help but compare it to the dot-com bubble. 

That view has since flipped. 

In the eyes of the market, the technology is improving so rapidly that it’s set to render entire industries obsolete. 

Consensus has swung from “historic bubble” to “existential anti-bubble” effectively overnight.

A viral report from Citrini Research laying out a bear case for an AI-dominated economy catalyzed a sell-off in legacy software and payment stocks including ServiceNow, DoorDash, Mastercard, Visa and Apollo.

Investors — who this year have been prone to knee-jerk reactions — are leaning into fears that AI agents and autonomous tools will disintermediate platforms, compress margins and automate high-fee services. 

Again, unlike the sell-offs in the second half of 2025, this jolt stems from the promise of the technology, not its failure. 

More and more investors are positioning for a “SaaSpocalypse” outcome.

AI was the reason to buy stocks. Now it’s the reason to sell.

Nvidia did what Nvidia always does. 

The chipmaker again cleared Wall Street’s bar with room to spare, reinforcing its status as the market’s de facto proxy for the AI economy. 

The stock soared in after-hours trading immediately on the news to bring its 12-month gain above 54%.

For the latest quarter, Nvidia reported revenue of $68.1 billion, up 73% year-over-year and ahead of consensus estimate for $66 billion.

This marked its largest quarter-over-quarter revenue jump on record, and the 28th consecutive quarterly revenue beat.

Data center revenue rose 75% from a year ago, according to the company, and hyperscalers continue to buy up Nvidia’s chips at a staggering rate. 

Management signaled that demand remains robust, and continues to ramp up.

That aligns with the bullish narrative that the massive capital expenditures of the last year is not speculative so much as foundational.

The bears have at least another quarter to rethink their case.

It's been 28 quarters since Nvidia last disappointed Wall Street on revenue

AI went from the reason to buy stocks to the reason to short everything. 

A report from Citrini Research led to billions in market capitalization being wiped out. The viral piece laid out how the technology could get so good that it becomes a bearish catalyst for the macro outlook.

I discussed the same topic three weeks ago with Michael A. Gayed, CFA of Lead-Lag Media.

Who knows, maybe we're one viral essay away from going back to bubble fears and dot-com comparisons.

This is the first time ever economic data from the future moved markets in the present.

Citrini Research's viral essay on a hypothetical 2028 outlook helped wipe out billions of dollars in stock market value to start the trading week. 

The piece laid out a scenario for double-digit unemployment, a market crash, and recession within two years' time.

Even though it's effectively fiction, Wall Street paid close attention.

I discussed at the NYSE with Kristen Scholer and the team at FINTECH.TV.

Wall Street is excited for Block to move forward with fewer humans and more AI.

The Jack Dorsey-led company announced it will cut more than 4,000 employees, or about half its workforce, and investors aggressively piled into the stock on the news. 

While Block did report solid earnings, the stock soared more than 24% after hours largely on account of its restructuring. 

In an internal memo Dorsey released publicly, he called out "intelligence tools” and “smaller and flatter teams.”

“A decision at this scale carries risk,” Dorsey said. “But so does standing still.”
That framing — act now or get disrupted later — echoes Citrini Research’s viral outlook from earlier in the week.

AI, according to the bearish report, will not simply make individuals more productive but push companies to radically slash headcount and embrace automation.

Block now anticipates up to $500 million in restructuring charges in the near-term, though the market reaction suggests investors are more than willing to take the hit for a leaner, more efficient company over the long haul.

Wall Street is already cheering AI-driven layoffs

There's a famous Fidelity study that found its best-performing portfolios belonged to dead people.

The same lesson applies to the living — investors who do not shuffle through stocks or trade in and out of positions tend to see the highest returns over time.

I discussed this in the context of the current bitcoin sell-off at the NYSE with Lance Glinn.

The conflict in Iran is already pushing oil prices higher but that doesn’t mean a drawn out supply shock is coming for markets.

Crude surged double digits in overnight trading, but the move looks more like a risk premium than evidence of missing barrels.

Unless exports, shipping lanes or Gulf infrastructure takes a meaningful hit, this volatility spike isn’t likely to usher in a new $100-a-barrel oil regime. 

Markets are reacting to sudden conflict, not confirmed supply destruction. 

Indeed, US crude prices’ fair value is estimated at $67 a barrel, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts.

For oil to hold above that level would require more than uncertain headlines.

There are other indicators that haven't blown out in a way that signals inventory tightness, and the futures curve still implies muted pricing several months ahead.
