That’s been the theme of my 25+ year career, starting on site in trenches, with pipes, pumps and concrete, and evolving into a Chartered civil and structural engineer, Director, Advisor, Mentor, Coach, and community builder.


My career has spanned over $5B of infrastructure and development projects across Australia and Vietnam. 


But the turning point came when I realised engineering wasn't just about drawings and approvals, it was about value, clarity, and execution. 


I once saved a client $1M in 1 hour of drawing review. 


That shift changed everything.


Today, I lead Vinculum Advisory—an engineering consultancy focused on specialist engineering and delivery management for development and infrastructure projects across NSW. We help our clients navigate the most complex components of design, risk and delivery, bringing technical clarity and strategic thinking to every phase.


I also serve as Technical Director at Legacy Property, where I drive value engineering and strategic outcomes across their portfolio. My role spans due diligence, planning, approvals, masterplanning and delivery, ensuring smarter outcomes, faster execution, and best-for-project results.


My technical strengths are matched by a deep commercial lens, blending engineering logic with development and delivery strategy.

The most heroic story of the Titanic wasn’t on the deck.

It was deep below it...

When the ship struck the iceberg, all 35 engineers understood the reality immediately.

If they left their posts, the ship would go dark.

So they stayed.

They worked waist-deep in freezing water.

Surrounded by steam, noise, and chaos.

Keeping the generators alive long enough for lights to guide passengers and for the radio to send the SOS that would summon rescue ships.

Because they held the line, hundreds of people lived.

Not one of them survived.

They didn’t panic.

They didn’t run.

They chose duty, knowing the cost.

This is what quiet courage looks like.

This is what it means to be an engineer.

6 things they don’t teach you as an Engineer at University.

But should...

1. Knowing what the client wants is sometimes more important than knowing what the project needs.

You can design the perfect plan.

But if it doesn’t solve the client’s actual fear, constraint or objective…

It’s useless.

2. Being able to explain a technical solution is more valuable than the solution itself.

Clarity wins projects.

Confidence wins trust.

Communication gets you promoted.

3. Managing an inbox and prioritisation is a career skill.

Engineering isn’t just calculations.

It’s 63 unread emails

3 urgent phone calls.

A client chasing drawings.

A contractor, just needing something quick.

Your ability to triage pressure determines your trajectory.

4. You are paid for judgement, not drawings.

Graduates think they’re paid to draft.

Mid-level engineers think they’re paid to design.

Senior engineers are paid to decide.

The higher you go, the less you draw and the more you understand and own risk.

And mitigate it.

5. Relationships will outperform raw intelligence.

The best engineer doesn’t always win.

The most trusted one does.

Clients hire people they believe in.

Councils respond to people they respect.

Contractors cooperate with people they like.

Technical ability gets you in the room.

Reputation keeps you there.

6. Your career is a commercial asset. Treat it like one.

University teaches engineering theory.

It doesn’t teach leverage.

It doesn’t teach positioning.

It doesn’t teach personal branding.

Your salary is tied to:

Visibility

Perceived value

Risk appetite

Commercial awareness

The engineers who understand money, influence and strategy early… 

Will win the engineers game.

Coding is dead. Vibe code.

Everyone’s suddenly an AI futurist.

Everyone’s a labour market economist.

Everyone’s a tech prophet.

While LinkedIn argues, I'll be building actual projects and solving real world problems...

The LinkedIn algorithm has changed. 

But I haven't...

I'm still posting anyway. 

Still trying to inspire the next wave of engineers. 

Still trying to break the stereotype that engineers are boring. 

Still getting up early to add value to our projects and clients.

Still pushing for infrastructure and housing delivery in NSW.

And

Still trying to slow down.

Anyway, regardless of the algo, a simple reminder to keep pushing for what you believe in.

From a 5-megabyte hard drive that needed a forklift…

To a 1-terabyte card you can lose in your pocket.

Now imagine another 66 years.

Engineers won’t just make things smaller or faster.

We’ll reshape what’s even possible:

Materials that heal themselves against corrosion or damage 

AI agents and robots that design and construct.

Infrastructure that predicts failure before it happens

Water networks that run with zero loss

Energy grids that think, trade, store and use power on demand 

Engineers who manage million-node systems instead of spreadsheets

The next leap won’t come from luck.

It’ll come from the people who can think differently, ask better questions, and push the boundaries of what engineering should be.

66 years.

The engineering industry is ageing, and we’re not replacing them fast enough.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth...

Australia’s infrastructure pipeline is exploding!

Transport upgrades

Water infrastructure

Energy transition

Data centres

Housing supply

Urban expansion

Billions committed. 

Decades of work ahead.

And yet…

Our most experienced engineers are retiring.

Mid-level engineers are burnt out.

Some graduates are disengaged.

And firms are quietly fighting over the same 10 A team people.

This isn’t a future problem. It’s already happening.

The real question...

Who is going to design the next 20 years of Australia?

Who is going to:

Sign the certificates?

Own the risk?

Defend the design to authorities?

Lead delivery teams?

Make commercial decisions when projects go sideways?

Because spreadsheets don’t sign certificates.

And AI doesn’t carry $10M PI

People do.

Here’s where we’re failing:

We complain about the “engineering shortage.”

But what are we doing to solve it?

Are we mentoring properly?

Are we giving graduates responsibility early?

Are we teaching commercial literacy?

Are we exposing young engineers to clients?

Are we building leadership…
or just billable hours?

Too many firms:

Complain about the pipeline

Underinvest in training

Expect loyalty without growth

Promote based on tenure, not capability

That model is broken.

The status quo is dangerous

If we don’t accelerate development:

Delivery risk increases

Approval timelines stretch

Fees get squeezed further

Debt stacks 

Technical quality declines

Burnout compounds

The future of engineering isn’t about producing more graduates.

It’s about producing better engineers, faster.

Engineers who:

Think commercially

Communicate clearly

Understand risk 

Lead rooms, not just design 

See systems, not just details

The next decade belongs to firms that build capability, not just projects.

If you’re a Director:

You’re not just responsible for delivery.

You’re responsible for succession.

If you’re a young engineer:

Stop waiting for permission.

Step up faster than the industry expects.

Because Australia doesn’t just need infrastructure.

It needs engineers capable of building it.

And right now, we’re not replacing ourselves fast enough.

And for a while, that’s exactly what you do.

Then something shifts.

You start sitting in meetings with clients.

You see budgets, politics and risk.

You realise the project is not just about the design.

It’s about decisions.

Suddenly the skills that matter start to change.

Communication matters.

Commercial awareness matters.

Stakeholder management matters.

You begin to understand that great engineers don’t just design solutions.

They shape outcomes.

Then later in your career something even stranger happens.

You come back to the start.

But this time you see it differently.

You still care about engineering.

You still care about good design.

But now you understand that the real job was never just about the design itself.

It was about judgement.

The full circle of an engineering career looks like this:

The best engineers eventually realise something simple.

Engineering is not just about building things.

This is the circle of an engineering career...

This breathtaking image may look like a gigantic tree sprouting from the ground...

It’s actually a river delta, where nature paints with water instead of paint.

What you see is called a dendritic pattern, from the Greek dendron, meaning “tree.”

It’s a recurring formation in nature, seen in river systems, blood vessels, lightning, and even neural networks.

It’s the geometry of connection.

The same pattern that powers nature… powers us.

Your network works the same way.

Every conversation branches.

Every introduction flows.

Every shared idea joins others downstream to form something larger.

A system of opportunities, energy, and growth.

Like water, your network carves its path over time.

It splits, reconnects, and creates new channels of value.

The more you nurture it, the stronger and more beautiful it becomes.

I’ve never really been a car guy...

You know the stereotype.

Engineers are supposed to love cars.

Know every engine spec.

Talk about torque curves and gear ratios.

Spend weekends under the bonnet like a mechanic.

That was never really me.

I’ve always been more interested in systems than machines.

How cities work.

How infrastructure connects.

How water moves through networks.

How developments turn into communities.

The scale just fascinated me more.

But every now and then…

A car comes along that even an engineer who doesn’t care about cars looks at and thinks:

Alright… that’s pretty cool.

Not because of the horsepower.

But because of the engineering. 

Not the badge.

But the thinking behind it.

The Sydney Tram Network in 1947...

Why did they make a decision to turn most of them all into roads for cars?!

In the heart of Hama, Syria, the majestic wooden norias have danced gracefully atop the Orontes River for nearly a millennium.

A testament to the brilliance of medieval engineering. 

Among them, the Noria al-Muhammadiya, constructed in 1361 CE, towers like a six-story monument, extending an impressive 21 meters across. 

This engineering marvel was capable of lifting a staggering 200,000 liters of water each hour, demonstrating not just functionality but remarkable craftsmanship. 

These intricate waterwheels, equipped with 120 meticulously crafted collection boxes, served as the lifeblood for the surrounding community, powering an ingenious ecosystem that nurtured agriculture, provided for homes, and even sustained the local mosques and gardens. 

In their heyday, over 30 norias lined the banks of the river, their rhythmic turning synchronizing with the gentle flow of the water beneath. 

While the world has changed and only 17 of these historical giants remain operational today, they stand not merely as remnants of a bygone era, but as enduring symbols of human ingenuity and sustainable design.

Each rotation connects the past with the present, echoing the harmony that once filled the air, a reminder that ingenuity in design can withstand the test of time, nurturing both humanity and nature in a delicate balance. 

As we observe these monumental structures, we reflect on the resilience and innovation that shape our civilizations, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire and remind us of our responsibility to harmonize with the world around us.

A council condition as a roadblock

A budget issue killing a project.

Or…

You can look at:

The condition as leverage

The risk register as strategy

The tough client as a lesson in influence

The budget issue forcing innovation

Engineering isn’t just maths.

It’s perception. It’s positioning. It’s perspective.

The best engineers I know don’t just solve problems.

They redefine them.

Every engineer starts here,  feeling small.

New role.

Big projects.

Bigger problems.

Everything towering over you.

At the start, engineering feels overwhelming.

Like the world is too big…

and you’re not built for it.

Then something shifts.

You learn.

You survive.

You deliver.

One day you look up and realise: 

You’re no longer beneath the seniors.

You’re standing among them.

But here’s the part no one tells you 

That feeling of “smallness”?

It never fully goes away.

Because every time you grow… 

The world gets bigger too.

New problems.

New responsibility.

New stakes.

That’s engineering.

The ones who win don’t chase comfort.

They respect the scale, reflect on how far they’ve come, and keep learning anyway.

Stay humble.

Stay curious.

Never stop growing.

The Moller House in Vienna, designed by Adolf Loos and built between 1927 and 1928, exemplifies his radical approach to modern architecture, emphasizing functional spatial organization over decorative excess. 

Looks like a face to me...

The house embodies Loos' Raumplan concept, where interior spaces are arranged in a dynamic, multi-level composition tailored to their intended use rather than adhering to traditional floor plans. 

Externally, the façade presents a restrained, cubic form with asymmetrical openings, reflecting Loos' belief in architectural simplicity and the rejection of ornament.
