Practice Builder Academy

We have a large body of knowledge that tells us how to do the work, but very little that teaches us how to get the work. Practice Builder Academy was a program for BVFLS professionals who wanted the latter kind of mentoring.

WHAT WE DID: My partner and I helped BVFLS professionals build practices they would love coming to and find success in – however they defined that for themselves.

WHO WE WORKED WITH: We worked with BVFLS professionals – from solo practitioners to appraisers who work in, or are in charge of, practices for small, medium, and large firms.

HOW WE DID IT: We offered recorded training so members could learn from the material at any time, anywhere, on any device. The training was reinforced in monthly calls with guest speakers who were thought leaders in their fields and a networking forum where members shared their challenges and successes.

WHAT MADE US DIFFERENT: In our industry, Practice Builder Academy wasn’t just different – it was the first of its kind. We shared the strategies and tactics we’d personally used to build our practices while assembling a growing library of content and resources that helped our members run theirs better.

A good firm. We tried, like everyone else, to figure out how to perform business valuations of internet companies. My tenure here was short as I finally found the confidence to start my own business valuation practice. I've never looked back.

In charge of business valuation and litigation support for local public accounting firm. (The firm is much larger today and is known as Reinsel Kuntz Lesher, LLP ... make that RKL, LLP.)

I also assisted clients in obtaining financing for new and expanding businesses and provided general management consulting services. Along the way, I fell into the role of chairing the firm’s marketing committee, which oversaw all its positioning efforts. We also redesigned the firm's capabilities brochure and all client service literature. It seemed like heady stuff at the time.

Ross & Company

Audit and tax accountant for local public accounting firm.

Not many people start out in public accounting, go into industry, and then get back into public accounting ... I did. I liked the small firm environment and working for a college classmate, discovered that I hated auditing, and got my first opportunity to do a business valuation of a private company.

Goldome

Corporate restructuring financial analyst for regional savings bank. (At the time, Goldome was the 13th largest savings bank in the US. In 1991, the bank was closed and divided between First Empire Corporation of Buffalo and Keycorp of Albany.)

Yes, restructuring was a euphemism for downsizing. When I arrived, Goldome was operating under a memorandum of understanding with the FDIC. Our group created business valuation models to evaluate management’s planning alternatives to raise capital from unrealized asset values, business divestitures, and balance sheet alchemy. By the way, Buffalo is a great city.

Financial Analyst

Meridian Bancorp

Business valuation analyst for mid-sized regional commercial bank. (It's now part of Wells Fargo, via Wachovia, CoreStates and First Union ... I heard it was like watching sausage being made.)

I worked in this position during the M&A heyday of the 1980s. We looked at acquiring discount brokerages, mortgage banking companies, and equipment leasing businesses, as well as other banks. It was pretty cool to work with Wall Street investment bankers, and I picked up an important nugget of corporate finance along the way – it's not about determining value, it's about not diluting earnings.

Carpenter Technology Corporation

Cost, marketing, and financial analyst for Fortune 500 specialty steel manufacturer.

The three positions I held allowed me to see how the business pieces fit together. I developed standard costing rates for the processes that produced the steel ... I created industry forecasts and marketing plans for the product managers that sold the steel ... and I prepared the monthly financial statements and 10-Qs & 10-Ks that reported the operating results from selling the steel.

Price Waterhouse

Tax accountant for national public accounting firm in the Philadelphia, PA and Brussels, Belgium offices. (It appears the place is now called PricewaterhouseCoopers.) I specialized in individual income taxes for US citizens working abroad and loved every minute of that work.

My first job out of college, and my first "Bright Lights, Big City"​ experience. It was still the Big 8 back then, and I thought I was living large on my $12,500 starting salary! The opportunity PW provided to live and work in Brussels for two years was just incredible.
