In addition, Katherine provides tutoring to high school students (from the refugee community) in the topics of science and mathematics (oh the irony!!!). As a Volunteer Business Consultant with Grow I had the pleasure of helping a small business in Uganda achieve their goals.

The type and depth of business coaching depended on the business I was helping. For example, one of the businesses I was working with, a tourism business, primarily needed help setting up systems for financial decision making. This meant I taught and curated information on MS Excel. Other clients needed help with hiring and training new staff. 

Working as a volunteer with Ugandan small businesses allowed me to hone my cross cultural training skills while building the capacity of small business owners in a country I am passionate about supporting.

Katherine is a PhD researcher under an Erasmus Mundus scholarship in the European Doctorate in Law and Economics.

Katherine's thesis is on the law and economics of microfinance. In particular, the research examines the effect of microfinance law on the operational self-sustainability of MFI's (microfinance institutions). This thesis completes a gap in the research on microfinance law by providing an up-to-date analysis of the theory and practical implications of different laws.

This thesis focuses on Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Italy. Qualitative research will complement the thesis as field-work interviews are scheduled for these countries.

Work on this thesis contributes to the overall research goals of the Grameen Italia Foundation, and the preliminary results have been presented at the conference on Microcredit Identity at the University of Bologna in May 2013.

Results from this research have the potential to affect the long term sustainability and thus the long term potential benefits from microfinance for a majority of the world's poor. Key chapters of the thesis will be published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Katherine defended her PhD thesis in December 2014 at Erasmus University, Rotterdam.
