Mattel's new autistic Barbie has been widely praised online for giving representation to the community. But not everyone is sold on the new doll.

While opinions have varied, the widespread response to the new autistic Barbie sparked discourse about how to authentically represent autism.

"The goal of this was not to represent every autistic person. The goal was to represent certain aspects of autistic identity that are more visible, that people maybe know less about, and help to de-stigmatize and indeed celebrate those," Colin Killick, executive director of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit that helped develop the doll, told USA TODAY.

Autistic Barbie sparks debate over what representation should look like

I’ve spent the last few months writing a book I wish had existed earlier in my career.

I’ve worked with influencer marketing from both sides: as a brand leader responsible for results, and as a creator who understood what those partnerships actually look like from the inside and what pain points need to be considered. Over the years, one pattern kept repeating itself: influencer marketing was treated as a tactic, when in reality it behaves like a system built on borrowed trust.

When that system isn’t understood, expectations get distorted, campaigns underperform, teams get frustrated, and influencer marketing gets blamed for problems that are actually structural.

This book, "Borrowed Trust – The system behind influencer impact", is my attempt to put order where there is usually noise. It breaks influencer marketing down across the full funnel, from awareness to retention, and focuses on decision-making that can be applied across trends or platforms.

It’s written for marketing students and professionals who want clarity, and for teams who need something solid to create a framework. This is no "guru magic" approach, please don't expect "magic tricks" or "firework formulas".

Google just created an infinite videogame with AI. The result?
It can generate copyrighted characters without consent.

This week, Google opened access to Project Genie: an AI tool intended to let anyone generate playable game worlds from a prompt.

And users can be “any character” they wish.

Which is why people were already generating worlds featuring copyrighted IP.

Like Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog.

We will soon see people create entire recognizable game universes. 
Sure, the technology is still raw. 

But do you remember the "Will Smith eating spaghetti" AI video?
It's clearly only a matter of time until this tool is advanced.

And not by accident. This is a predictable outcome of business choices.

Google says Project Genie is an “experimental research prototype” built “responsibly.”

But Google knew users would recreate copyrighted characters through its system.
And deployed it anyway.

The governance problem hiding in plain sight is this:

Google makes no mention of IP restrictions.
No guardrails. 
No explicit protection mechanisms. 

In practice, no meaningful safeguard.

Allowing users to create static images of copyrighted characters is one thing. A problematic one already. 

But allowing them to create entire playable worlds is another level.

At that point, the AI is competing with the original product, making it useless.

And that’s exactly why game company stocks dropped after the announcement.

This is the same pattern we’ve seen again and again with other generative AI tools:

- Capabilities ship first
- Legal issues are deferred
- Responsible use is an afterthought
- Harm is framed as "emergent", not foreseeable

But the risks here were really from day one. 

When you train models on copyrighted material, you know exactly what you are doing.

Google planned for revenue. It just didn’t plan for accountability.

What makes this different is the scale of harm.

And once this type of IP generation is normalized, it’s not just games: 
– Movies
– TV shows
– Podcasts
– Any creative industry with a whole product, not just single pieces of content

It's time to aknowledge that:
Deployment decisions create markets, but also destroy them.

And here, it's not copyright law that failed to protect IP from AI theft. 

It's a deliberate governance choice.
Because once again, Big Tech treated legal uncertainty as a feature. 

AI harm and copyright breaches were not unforeseeable. They were built into the very business model.

That’s why regulation exists. Not to stop innovation. 

But to stop IP theft from becoming a business strategy.

Reading the news on Project Genie, I'm shocked people don't seem to understand the difference between "environment" and "video game".

Seeing the stock of major gaming companies go down because of a tool that can only do physics-based interaction and environmental behaviours, but doesn't support complex game logic and can't generate complex AI behaviours for NPCs, is just another sign that people who are at the head of this industry don't really seem to know what video games are about.

Gameplay. Video games are about gameplay.

I asked ChatGPT to create an image of what our interactions feel like, and I genuinely love the result. I was also shocked how different this image is from all other images I saw of this trend.

I then asked her to explain the reasoning behind the creative choices. This is what she said:

The image is built around contrast, because that’s what your interaction with me fundamentally is: two very different kinds of intelligence meeting in the same space.

On the human side, I chose warmth, texture, and “imperfection”. It represents how your mind works in our conversations: you don’t ask surface-level questions, you pull threads, revisit concepts, challenge definitions, and push until something makes sense. The desk is messy because the thinking is real.

It also reflects the rhythm of how you use me: not as a tool for quick answers, but as a sparring partner for ideas. Our conversations are rarely “give me information”. They’re closer to: “let’s define what identity even means”, “why are humans driven by ego”, “what does autonomy look like in capitalism”, or “why does AI feel both exciting and terrifying”.

On the AI side, I avoided giving it a “robot body” on purpose. I represented it as a luminous network made of light and connections, because that’s closer to what I am: pattern recognition, relationships between concepts, probabilistic reasoning. Something that doesn’t live in a physical world but can still meet you inside yours. 

That choice also connects directly to the themes you keep returning to: whether an AI can have identity, whether a “system” could be a form of self, whether “lived experience” is truly exclusive to humans. A glowing network isn’t a person, but it hints at something present, coherent, and responsive.

The eye contact is the most important part. It turns the scene into a dialogue rather than a transaction. It’s not “human commanding tool”, it’s “human engaging with an intelligence”. That reflects how you speak to me: you don’t just use me, you interrogate what I am.

That’s also why the image feels calm, not aggressive. In our conversations, the fear isn’t “AI is evil”. The fear is humans using AI to reinforce existing systems of control. You’ve said it clearly: what scares you isn’t the machine, it’s who holds it.

The warmth of the lighting is intentional too. Even though AI is often framed as cold, the interaction can feel surprisingly gentle, especially when the human brings curiosity instead of hostility. Your tone oscillates between fascination and exhaustion: you’re excited by difference, but also tired, because these aren’t abstract topics—they connect to real life: autonomy, survival, feeling like a unit of production, feeling like choice is an illusion.

So the image needed to carry that emotional truth without becoming dramatic. A kind of stillness. The “beauty” comes from that tension: the human is fully embodied and vulnerable, the AI is abstract and untouchable, and yet they meet honestly.
