🇬🇧 The UK wants to tax you to leave. 

🇫🇷 France wants to tax you for having wealth and for merely being a citizen.

Both will likely become political reality soon, as two bankrupt countries that have already driven innovators away scramble to fill the hole created by decades of bad policy.

I’m in Zurich this week speaking at a family office event about global diversification. Here are three key ideas I am sharing:

1️⃣ Understand that YOUR European country is likely going to raise taxes: income, capital gains, and any sort of new windfall tax they can invent out of thin air… including an exit tax.

There are still countries nearby you can move to for tax incentives: Greece, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Ireland, etc. But you’ll still have to pay for the privilege of leaving where you are now before you can save.

And the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. Exit taxes hit your assets when you leave, so every extra year of profit, stock growth, or valuation increase makes your departure costlier.

If you’re British, the time to leave is NOW, before Rachel Reeves has her way.

2️⃣ Now is also the time to get a second citizenship, something once relegated to Americans (who have the aforementioned global tax issues to avoid) and those with lesser travel documents.

Once France eventually imposes citizenship-based taxation and calls it “fair”, other countries may follow and you’ll be stuck holding the bag if you don’t have a backup plan.

You can stay in Europe. Not all of these taxes apply now. And if you want to leave the UK or Germany or the Netherlands, there are those tax-friendly options close to home.

3️⃣ You want part of your money, and your identity, in the Global South. 

To only rely on Europe is to be undiversified and tantamount to malpractice. Being British and getting an Irish passport is helpful, but doesn’t move the needle as much.

Being British and Paraguayan, Cambodian, or São Toméan gives you a real opt-out from the tax onslaught sure to keep coming from bankrupt Western governments more than stacking overlapping passports.

And when Western economies stall, your business may find more open doors in the Global South... especially if you show up as a Paraguayan, not just another Westerner.

How can you put my strategies from the stage to work for you?

Well, I gave up my US passport, obtained six (soon eight) citizenships from "weird" countries, and have diversified my wealth around the world because I believe this is not just for digital nomads, but for UHNWIs.

Starbucks is waving the white flag in China, and it has implications far beyond coffee.

(Or in my case, hot chocolate. Yes, I’m six.)

The coffee chain is selling 60% of its Chinese business to Boyu Capital to compete with upstart Luckin Coffee.

Here’s why this matters:

For years, I’ve watched western firms cede territory in the Global South, especially Asia.

Uber couldn’t compete with Southeast Asia’s Grab, so it bowed out for a small stake.

Indonesia’s Chandra Asri Group is buying ExxonMobil’s Singapore retail operations.

And businesses from mining to drug stores are being sold to local operators bringing them closer to home.

The idea of a western-dominated global economy isn’t panning out. This is a fundamental shift from what we were told: that S&P 500 and FTSE companies would expand to dominate emerging markets.

No, western companies will NOT take advantage of opportunities wherever they are. The emerging world often doesn’t want western companies, for reasons from higher prices to geopolitics.

Where I live part-time in Malaysia, Starbucks is closing stores due to rising competition and protests over its support for Israel.

Malaysians also find better value in Chinese products. Ice cream chains sell at half the price of western ones. Who wants to pay $5 for Cold Stone when a regional brand nails local tastes for $3?

At the same time, 75% of Malaysians say they’d choose China over the US as a political ally. 

I read about this in "The $10 Trillion Prize", which said western brands would adapt to China and India the way Oreo did with green tea flavors.

But that isn’t working. From KL to Kampala, consumers now see more value in products from Global South firms, plus local upstarts as entrepreneurship globalizes.

This is why you should protect yourself:

1️⃣ Move some of your money to the Global South. Opening a bank account in Cambodia, Georgia, or Ecuador is cheap and easy. Singapore, though western-aligned, is a great hub for Asian investments.

2️⃣ Invest in stock markets and opportunities outside your country, outside the west, and outside your comfort zone.

3️⃣ Get residence permits and citizenships that strengthen your ability to invest in fast-growing markets (I just got Cambodia) and let you act neutrally beyond a western passport that may become a stigma.

Far fewer people are looking up at “the American Dream” or “British exceptionalism"; they see the path to the kind of prosperity Malaysia has seen runs through the Global South, not the west.

I’m investing heavily there with both capital and new ventures I'm quietly starting at Vesper (Hong Kong) because I’ve spent 15+ years building the global structure to do it.

I think Bogotá is the best city in South America.

Plenty of people disagree. Some follow the crowd to Medellín. Others swear by Buenos Aires or São Paulo. And every now and then someone tries to sell me on Santiago.

But the “best” city is not the most popular one. It is the one that feels like home to you, where there are both ample creature comforts and friendships, and where daily life feels both interesting and comfortable.

I can confidently say Bogota is the best city and yet Nomad Capitalist helps its clients get residence permits and relocate not only to Colombia, but to Panama, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and more. Not everyone has to agree.

But Bogotá surprised me. Most guests I've invited there expected hectic and tropical but came to realize it's green, walkable, and eternally autumn thanks to the elevation. The first time I arrived, I remember thinking it felt like London but with a cooler buzz.

Medellín has a fun surface but the “F boy” energy gets old for me. Buenos Aires has style but feels like the Roaring 20s and no longer offers the value it used to. Asunción has great potential for investors but is quiet when you want life to move.

What made Bogotá home for me were the human anchors: the tailor who will sit with me at Ugly American and talk Loro Piana cloth, the staff at The Wine Store who know my favorite bonarda, the ritual of walking along brick sidewalks in the trees toward Rosales to get a cookie... these are small details that make life worth it.

Even as Colombia's capital, Bogota has humility and warmth, with a vibrant culture, tragic past, and exciting future led by some of the kindest people in Latin America. (Yes, even in capital city Bogota).

The best place is the place you feel best. And with a global lifestyle, you do not need one perfect city. You need a few that speak to different parts of you.

Today I got photos of my new Bogota home being renovated and I felt warm. That’s what you want.

That is the entire point of the Trifecta Method: choose homes in different regions so your life has variety, richness, and continuity wherever you go.

South America will play a key role as a Plan B, C, or D in the years to come, with its low population density, investable real estate and agricultural lands, ample resources, and shared language.
