I was on 26 podcasts last year. My favorite was also the shortest.
 
(and it might be the difference for you between participants having great intentions and actual, lasting change.)
 
Quick story - 
 
I've known 📚Michael Bungay Stanier (author of The Coaching Habit) for going on 16 years.  (Evidenced by the babyfaced photo below, circa 2012)

Originally admired him from afar. 
Then became acquaintances...
Then he helped me through a dark patch...
Now I consider him one of my dearest friends.
 
Though regular intellectual sparring partners, we've never had the opportunity to collaborate on anything...
 
So I was delighted to be invited on his brilliant podcast - Change Signal.
 
On the episode, we talked about a little discussed challenge with behavior change following learning workshops:
 
Foundational vs Situational Change
 
The premise is this:
 
Most behavior change commitments that participants make after training sessions is situational. 

eg. "I'll speak with conviction at our board meeting next month"
 
Lasting change happens when we distill those situational behavior changes into their foundational element(s)

eg. "When I'm in a meeting, instead of waiting to be invited to speak, I will ask one clarifying question, so that people can see I'm thinking about the outcome"
 
The analogy we used was that of professional athletes learning a new technique.

Pros don't practice on game day.

Pros practice (a lot) before game day, so the muscle memory is developed before the high stakes moment.
 
Let's not set our participants up to fail.
 
When you get this right, your participants:
 
a. can take action immediately after the workshop
b. will perform better in those high stakes moments
c. build lasting skills that get noticed

Prove the impact of your leadership programs.

I have a no a$$hole policy. 

Have done for 18 years.

Anyone who works with me knows it. 

Most people who have had a single call with me know it!

I say it so often I sometimes disconnect from the meaning. 

What does it really mean to me?  It's not just about turning away from the blowhard. Or the person lacking integrity. 

More broadly speaking it also means leaning into people who are:

Open > closed
Abundant > scarcity 
Learner > know it all
Fun > stuffy

That’s my definition. What’s yours?

I’d bet money part of the reason you started your own shop is to choose who you work with. 

Are you doing that?

No one says you have to take the client just because they want to work with you. 

Jade asked what I’m most proud of… it’s that. The people my businesses attract. 

I'm often complimented on the calibre of client we have in our communities (be that Catalyst or Actionable).  I'd love to say I do it for the community... but honestly, I do it for me. And the community benefits.

Life's too short to work with a$$holes. Mine is. Yours is. 

Have fun this year. 
Make a dent. 
Do it with people you genuinely enjoy.

Not sure which consultants and trainers need to hear this today, but here it is: 
You’re probably not losing work because your workshops aren’t good.
You’re losing work because you’re leading with the solution instead of the pain.

Most workshop positioning sounds like:
 “Empathetic communication.”
 “Psychological safety.”
 “Better alignment.”

All true.

Also… not how your buyer thinks about their day.

They’re not walking around saying,
“We need more psychological safety.”

They’re going home saying:
“Why is Dave snapping at clients again?”
“How did that conversation go so badly?”
“Why are we having the same issues every quarter?”

That’s pain language.
It’s specific. Human. Pointable.

And when you position your workshops using that language, a few things happen:

 • Clients recognize themselves immediately
 • Sales conversations get shorter
 • One-off workshops turn into actual programs

The simple structure I keep coming back to:

Where things are now → where they want to be → what’s blocking the jump

Not your framework.
Not your methodology.
Not the fancy workshop title.

When someone reads your positioning and thinks,

“Wait… I was literally just talking about that,”

you’ve done the hard work.

Only then do they care about how you solve it.

Bonus: when the pain is articulated properly, it becomes obvious that this isn’t a one-workshop problem. Which is why better positioning almost always leads to longer engagements.

I love thinking about the team dynamic - how someone's going to fit, who's going to thrive, and how Actionable can be a container for them to realize their professional dreams.

It's particularly fun with a role like this - we're hiring for current technical skills AND hiring for a desire to grow (rapidly) into a leadership role.

I think - particularly in smaller companies - it's easy for people to become "stuck" within a role.
Through no one's fault, the person stays in a particular role longer than is ideal, precisely because they're good at what they do (and/or, maybe because their company isn't growing)

For the Front End Developer Role at Actionable, we want the current skills... and we know that this person can/should be growing into a Product Ownership role within 12 months. 

That's what we need. And, for the right person, that's what they want.

My guess is the ideal person for this role is:

2026. Here we go.

Last week's client panel on "pricing and positioning" took an unexpected turn...
And I'm here for it.

I asked 3 clients to join a panel for the rest of the Actionable community, sharing whatever they were comfortable sharing re. their proposals, positioning and pricing.

It was awesome.

A couple of the key messages I picked up:

1. shifting from selling "great training" to "behavior change aligned to business outcomes" has allowed for a 30-40% increase in contract value.

2. 80%+ of winning proposals focus on the client's situation, business priorities, key metrics and identified business blockers. 20% (or less) is on the content/delivery (keep in mind - these are training firms)

3. The companies that have been thriving through COVID, tariffs and economic uncertainty are selling outcomes, not workshops.

As Greg succinctly put it, "the 'training' business is in jeopardy. But the 'improving performance' business will last for eternity."

It's more than a brand shift. The core of your offer must be focused on moving the needles that matter most to your clients.

I've been banging this drum for years. 

Hearing it played back by clients - leaders of successful training companies - has heightened the urgency for me... 

We must shift the focus from what happens in the room to the change that happens after.

Make it too easy and nothing happens long term.

Melanie and I had a full day planning session yesterday, dialling in product roadmap. 

And, of course - AI was front and center in the conversation:  Where can we reduce friction?  Where can we provide faster results for clients?

And where are we deliberately NOT reducing friction?

18 years in the trenches of behavior change - what ACTUALLY makes learning stick (vs what's noise) has taught me a whole lot about the human condition...

One of the key lessons is that sometimes (most of the time?) if we want real change commitment from participants, we need to create the conditions for them to slow down... and actually think through what that change effort is going to take (and why it matters)

An example of how this plays out in product:

In the Habit Builder (behavior change tech), participants are given the opportunity to choose when, how and how often they receive "nudges" to reflect on their commitments.

Do we know the best time for nudges to be sent?  Of course we do - almost 2,000,000 data points worth of evidence suggest specific windows.  

But what we ALSO know is that the participant manually choosing the times/dates and medium (SMS, email, Slack, Teams, Whatsapp, etc.) matters more than the precise cadence.

Adding friction (manual selection) creates a better, consistent outcome than reducing friction (automated message schedule).

Because the act of selection represents a micro commitment from the participant... a little bit more "leaning in" by slowing down.

Just because we CAN make something more effortless doesn't mean we SHOULD. 

Being clear on the objective (in our case - lasting behavior change) is a critical north star in determining where to make things easier or not.

oh - and this ridiculous burger - served on a skillet of bubbling béchamel - was my reward at dinner for staying strong on the urge to "AI everything".
