As of an hour ago, my 1:1 coaching for January is full.

I can’t believe it.

When I sold EditorNinja, the plan was to coach full time. I hoped I’d be able to turn things around (fall was brutal for closing coaching clients).

And now I’m full and starting to line people up to kick off in February.

Unreal. I hoped this would happen but was apprehensive. And here we are.

I heard from a client yesterday, during one of our coaching calls, that they just closed a website for $7,200.

Before working with me, they were trying to sell the same sites for under $3k.

I'd call that a win.

I just told a prospect, who verbally committed to starting coaching this month, that we’re not a good fit.

Why?

Because he ghosted me after committing.

You might call this “you can’t fire me, I’m quitting” energy, and maybe it is a bit, but hear me out.

Today is my first day as a full time coach, working with agency owners and digital solopreneurs to help them scale their business profitably and sanely.

I have limited bandwidth, and there are a lot of people who want my help.

What I don’t have time for is people that ghost me. Who say they’ll do one thing and then don’t. Who aren’t convinced that they can’t achieve their goals without help.

Client qualification has three elements:
1. Is it the kind of business I can help best?
2. Are they able to afford my services?
3. Are they action takers who communicate well?

This person has a digital agency ✅ 
They can afford it ✅ 
But they’re not taking action and aren’t communicating ❌

Here’s my best advice for you if you’re running a consultancy or agency:

If any prospect doesn’t meet all of your criteria, DON’T SIGN THEM.

A vacuum abhors being empty. Every time I’ve turned down a project that was a bad fit, at least 1 better qualified project has arrived in my inbox within 24-72 hours.

Every single time.

Only work with clients who align with your best clients. Anything less just isn’t worth the hassle.

You don't need a ton of clients if...

After 10 years in business, over $5m in revenue, and hundreds of businesses impacted positively, I want to share three mindset shifts I've made and three beliefs I've adopted that have benefited me massively, especially as I've navigated shifts in my work.

I shared these with a private coaching client, but figured they'd benefit everyone here.

1. Saying no to misaligned opportunities (even lucrative ones) creates space for better-fit growth. This is woo-woo, but every time I've said no to someone who wasn't the right fit, I had someone who was arrive in my inbox within 24-48 hours. Every single time.

2. Feast-or-famine cycles are usually self-inflicted by stopping momentum once things feel “full.” Instead of fully stopping sales and marketing, create a waitlist and pull back on volume (but don't stop it completely), because momentum is much harder and takes longer to get back than we think.

3. Most people underestimate their short-term capacity — a few focused months can change the trajectory meaningfully. If your business isn't where it needs to be, working more/harder/smarter (all three) for a season is the solution.

These are the mental reframes that helped me with these:

1. Nothing is permanent — this is a season, not a lifestyle. Yes, you'll be tired at the end. But then your lifestyle can return to where it's been, but you'll be in a much better place.
2. Visibility and effort don’t need to be maxed out all the time. You simply need to be consistent (with the occasional extra effort for a season).
3. We can always do more than we think, but sometimes we have to build our capacity to work. If working more and differently feels hard now, just wait a few weeks and it will become your new normal.

Shift your paradigm, change your life. These will help you shift.
