I am STILL deeply saddened by the loss of Bernie Marcus. Even though he passed on 11-04-2024. Bernie has always been my "Top Indirect Mentor" throughout my life. 

🌏Bernie was a Retail Icon who helped The Home Depot #HomeDepot become the world's #1 Home Improvement Retailer.

I admired and respected Bernie's passion for altruism, giving back, and philanthropy. Bernie truly LIVED all 8x values of Home Depot daily.

I will 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 be grateful for Bernie's positive and long-lasting impact on my retail career/leadership trajectory.

I was blessed to start working at The Home Depot in 1991 at the Deerfield Beach, Florida store, where Bernie Marcus, a co-founder of the company, lived just 5 miles away in Boca Raton. 

He visited our store three to four times a month, and I always enjoyed his visits. He was resolute about ensuring that every employee and leader consistently provided exemplary customer service.

I then transferred to the Pompano Beach store (#208) off Copans Road and I-95, where my leadership career began to blossom.

One of the most powerful axioms that I created that will generate success in your chosen endeavors is "𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲." 

This strategy activates the 'Law of Attraction.' The mundane methodology behind the axiom is to 'Think, Speak, Behave, and Act' as if you were your future self, living your desires. 

This mental anchor can create a hyper-focused motivational conviction within you that will generate the necessary actions required to achieve your aspirations. Here is my F.O.C.U.S. acronym:
🔵Fierce
🔵Ongoing
🔵Concentration
🔵Upon
🔵Success

After receiving a performance review, I created this anchor while working at #HomeDepot The Home Depot in Pompano Beach, Florida in 1994. 

I had an epiphany where I realized that to be promoted, I had to start thinking, speaking, behaving, and acting like I was 𝐀𝐋𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘 an Assistant Manager.

I went home and created a detailed list of the necessary adjustments to achieve my goal:

1️⃣I stopped wearing vendor shirts and purchased a brand new wardrobe of professional shirts. 

2️⃣I went to the barber and got a clean haircut (my hair was down to my neck). 

3️⃣I purchased more leadership, human resources, soft skills, and motivational books. I wish I had "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥" back then. This book would have been a lifesaver!

4️⃣I asked my peers and bosses to point out any inconsistent behaviors with being an Assistant Manager. 

5️⃣I put my ego on the back burner as the feedback was coming in quickly. I was initially overwhelmed with the plethora of behavioral changes required.

6️⃣I shadowed the top leaders in the store and took plenty of notes on how to become a true Servant Leader.

7️⃣I put Post-it Notes around the perimeter of my bathroom mirror to remind me of my areas for improvement.

8️⃣I implemented the 10-second rule whenever I felt stressed, angry, or discombobulated. You wait 10 seconds before speaking, acting, or making any decisions.

9️⃣I doubled down on my character, integrity, and values. This was challenging because many managers (not leaders) were getting promoted by leaning into disingenuous behaviors to obtain specific results. I decided to focus on the long game. 

The key actuators to successfully implementing and executing this anchor are persistence, patience, and consistency. 

Whenever most people witness a successful individual or organization, they overlook the sacrifice, commitment, dedication, and grit necessary for success. 

I also tapped into my "Intrinsic Motivation" because I always enjoy helping others achieve their goals. My sincere aspiration for advancing in leadership was to have a larger platform to help others. 

I NEVER fell prey to the 'Extrinsic Motivation' of an increased salary, stock options, bonuses, or power. I intuitively sensed that these external perks would be temporary and fleeting.

I was promoted 18 months later!

As I have gotten older, I am genuinely grateful for having a tumultuous and challenging childhood. Every day, I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunity to experience this environment.

From 5 to 12, we moved 17 times, which was extremely difficult and challenging for me. 

Because I was angry with my life, I started ATTRACTING the wrong people to associate with. I started smoking, engaging in negative self-talk, skipping school, and was in and out of Juvenile Home. 

At the age of 12, I made a covenant with God to turn my life around. I quit smoking, started reading the bible, and released my old life.

🚨If I can help just one person by sharing HOW I overcame my tumultuous and challenging childhood, I will have succeeded. We are all ALL connected 🙏 

Here are the advantages I now perceive and utilize from my childhood:

⏯️𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐘- I possess heightened empathy and compassion for people suffering. However, setting "Healthy Boundaries" is paramount to enjoying peace and happiness. 

⏯️𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘- I have the ability to stay the course and NEVER give up on my endeavors. Consistency is one of my Superpowers. 

⏯️𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍- Because my external circumstances were dire, I learned to tap into and embrace my "Intrinsic Motivation." By turning inward, I realized a perpetual energy that is always available.

⏯️𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍- My survival (literally, not metaphorically) depended on accurately reading people's intentions. I created a 'Symbiotic Relationship with my Internal Guidance System' (IGS).

⏯️𝐄𝐗𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐈𝐒𝐄- I became passionate about maintaining excellent physical health. I understood very early that having a strong and flexible body produces the perfect environment where focus, positive energy, optimism, and peace can thrive and flourish.

⏯️𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒- I CHOSE to forgive my parents, my childhood, and myself. I utilized forgiveness to [alchemize] my pain and suffering. We live in a world of duality, and every experience has a diametrically opposite energy available, ALWAYS.

⏯️𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐄- I am grateful for every experience I attract. I RESOLUTELY know that I am graciously being given the opportunity to learn, grow, and ascend. 

⏯️𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄- I learned to choose to focus on how to give and receive unconditional love. This is WHY I created my axiom: "Whatever We Focus Upon Expands in our Reality." 

I am extremely proud of overcoming the tumultuous and challenging childhood I had. I am living proof that we can change our lives by practicing:

🔵Gratitude
🔵Compassion 
🔵Discernment
🔵Self-love 
🔵Forgiveness
