Client: I've been looking at Gary Vaynerchuk and Ryan Serhant's posts. We should model our content after them. They get thousands of likes.

Me: What are Gary and Ryan selling in those posts?

Client: I mean...motivation? Personal brand building?

Me: Right. You're selling SaaS implementation services. Do you see the disconnect?

Client: But the engagement numbers don't lie.

Me: Do they though? Have you heard of engagement pods?

Client: What's that?

Me: Groups where influencers coordinate to like and comment on each other's posts. Makes the algorithm boost their content. Plus, Gary's been posting daily for over a decade. You've been on LinkedIn for 6 months.

Client: So we can't create engaging content?

Me: You can. But copying motivational posts won't get you there. Your content needs to demonstrate expertise that gets prospects thinking 'this person could solve my problems.'

Client: What should we focus on?

Me: Case studies. Process breakdowns. Industry insights. Content that shows you understand your prospects' specific challenges.

Client: But that won't get thousands of likes.

Me: No. But it'll get you qualified prospects who actually want to buy what you're selling.

My point:  trying to copy big LinkedIn influencers.
(1) Their content serves different goals than yours. They're selling courses and personal brands, not B2B services.

(2) Much of their engagement comes from pods, years of audience building, or a mix of both.

(3) Focus on content that demonstrates expertise to your specific target market instead of chasing vanity metrics.

A founder told me LinkedIn "isn't doing anything" for him. I figured out why in 30 seconds, and gave him a routine to completely turn-around his results.

To be fair to the founder, he was posting relatively consistently (3x/week). The content was good, not great. But still, it wasn't like this is what was holding him back.

...which confused him. He thought he was doing everything right. Then I asked him the following:

(1) How many outbound comments have you left in the last week? Answer: 0.

(2) How many of your ICP have you connected with in the last week? Answer: 1

(3) How many of your ICP have you DM'd this week? Answer: 1

It just isn't enough. You can play the LinkedIn game hoping for 100% inbound, or you can maximize the platform's utility and get way more out of it.

Here's the routine I advised this founder to follow (that you should steal, too, if you're in the same spot):

SETUP:

- Identify 100+ decision-makers you want to get in front of
- Set up custom feed of their content (guide here: https://lnkd.in/eZ2gPmd8)

DAILY:

- Allocate 15 minutes to leave thoughtful comments on their posts (aim for 3-5)

- Connect with 20 of these people per day

- Track who accepts and start DM conversations accordingly (guide here: https://lnkd.in/e3vXpTFP)

More than getting in front of them simply because you DM'd them, LinkedIn will show them your content while they scroll after you've DM'd them. Win-win.

Do this for 30 days. If you still aren't generating any interest, you have bigger problems than LinkedIn.

1.5 years after graduating, I'm trying to grow my content agency to $1M ARR. Here's a 2025 recap at Hat Tip:

(1) Grew revenue just under 1.5x.

(2) Profit increased, but minimally (made relatively large team investments).

(3) Worked with 12 more Series A-or-beyond startups.

It was a great year by most measures, but I'd be lying if I said I'm remotely satisfied.

There are a few key areas I want us to be better in (which ultimately starts with me):

a. Recruiting. I haven't spent nearly enough time on it, which has cost me more time than I'd like to admit in the long run.

b. Training / process. At our stage, I'm still too involved in many aspects of client delivery. I never want to leave it completely, but I need to actively manage my way back a bit.

c. CRM management. The first two issues lead into this: I need more time to work on sales, and that time will come from solving the first two issues.

d. Ironically, I think I need to stop and smell the flowers more. I'm proud of what we've accomplished and the clients we work with, but tend to strictly focus on the "negatives" around the business...sort of like I'm doing here. Lol.

Anyway, thank you to friends and clients who made the last year great. I'll see you back here next January for my next list of problems.

My 35-minute, 3-step LinkedIn prospecting routine that's getting me 3-5 pitches per week:

20 Mins:

- Use Sales Nav + LinkedIn's recommended accounts feature on previous ICP accounts to find new ones.

- Engage with their most recent piece of content and add them to your tracker (template below). 

*if they haven't posted / commented recently, I skip right to connecting.

5 Mins:

- Update list with accepted connections from the day prior

- Send voice note follow-up to messages you sent 48h or more ago (I keep it as simple as "I know people get busy, so I just want to make sure you saw this")

15 mins:

- Record personalized 0:45-1:00 videos with your phone, introducing yourself + tying something about them/their company to what you do.

Ex: I saw a post from a VP of Marketing who said they think founders/CEOs should be posting on LinkedIn.

But, their CEO wasn't posting on LinkedIn.

So, I opened my video reading her hook word-for-word, transitioning into a quick intro, and getting into what we do (if you're reading this, let's chat).

My point is, if you do this long enough, you will get responses. It's on you to provide as much value to them as possible.

I hand-wrote 35 cards to friends, clients, and prospects that helped make 2025 great for me.

Last year, I heard Jesse Itzler talk about this on My First Million. I decided to do it.

So, I spent $102 on cards (and $50 later on stamps / postage 😂) to do this.

Then, I spent 2 weekend mornings in November writing them all out.

Some reflections:

(1) The process was nice. Rarely, if ever, do we stop and reflect on individual relationships like this. It was nice.

(2) I got tons of thoughtful messages thanking me for them. It seems like they were well-appreciated.

(3) My handwriting was never good to begin with (much to the dismay of my teacher mother). I can confirm after graduating 2 years ago and barely writing at all, it has gotten worse.

Anyway, this is going to be standard practice for EOY at Hat Tip moving forward.

If you're on the fence about doing it, I strongly recommend!

50% of the time I tell a founder they should post 5x/week, they look at me like I have 3 eyes.

"Isn't that way too much?"

"I don't want to over-do it"

"Nobody cares about what I have to say"

This is the wrong framing. The right way to think about it:

(1) The compounding effects of your social efforts are measured in posts, not months. That means the less you post, the longer you draw out the time to see the benefits you want.

(2) Why would you intentionally hamper the amount of shots on goal you get per week? 

(3) Look at your competitors. If they're posting daily, you have catching up to do. If they're not, you have an incredible opportunity.

Now, I totally get that going from 0 to 5 posts/week off the bat can be intimidating. Heck, I'm thousands of posts in and STILL feel weird here and there.

So, if I were you and wanted to ramp up posting without feeling overwhelmed or out of place:

- Ramp up to 3x/week
- See how you feel / how it's perceived
- Once comfortable, work to 4/week
- See how you feel / how it's perceived
- After that, move to 5x/week

My peewee hockey coach mandated each player to shoot 500 pucks/day in the summer. For context, that is RIDICULOUS volume for a kid.

Luckily for me, I was doing it before the mandate. I just loved it (it may or may not have required us to get a new garage door).

Now, I was a terrible skater. Like, really bad. 

But, because I was shooting close to 15,000 pucks/month, I could shoot like it was nobody's business.

It probably kept me on teams I should've been cut from, if I'm being honest.

Now, how the heck does this relate to social content?

Volume.

I wasn't a gifted shooter. My form, to this day, isn't perfect. But putting in a ridiculous amount of reps is what made me good at it.

This works the same way for social content.

Your first 10 posts will suck.
The next 10 will suck, but less.
The 10 after will look half-decent.

But, as long as you keep showing up and put a baseline level of effort into your content, you WILL get better at it.

All the accounts you follow on here who you think have it "figured out" put in the reps.

Now it's your turn.

Factors that determine post performance:

(1) Topic
(2) Hook
(3) Media choice
(4) Overall value the reader derives
(5) Amount of comments it drives.

Factors that do not determine post performance:

(1) Length

Stop worrying about if your post is "too long" or "too short".

Get your message across in a succinct, compelling matter, and move on.

If you're asking "how can we automate this" with anything relating to LinkedIn, you've already lost.

So many people openly brag about building AI agents that find them topics, write content that "actually sounds like them", and engage on their account as if we can't already tell.

Nobody cares for that. 

I can't think of a greater insult to your audience than telling them they're not worth spending time on, but expecting them to buy from you.

After writing 4,000+ posts for over 40 founders, I can confirm this picture sums up ~75% of writing for LinkedIn:

1. Prioritize your hook. 

The first thing the reader sees must give them no choice but to keep reading (if you're reading this, I succeeded).

2. Say more, with less.

No filler words or sentences.

3. Appeal to the reader's brain.

Organize ideas the way the brain likes to. Keep your writing to one idea per sentence.

4. REPS.

The writer didn't include this, but I will. 

Your first post will suck. Good. So will your second, third, fourth, and fifth.

But over time, it will start sucking less. And less. And less.

And eventually, after enough, reps, you'll be good at it!

Save this for the next time you have to write.

If I wanted to guarantee I generated 0 pipeline from social, I would:

(1) Expect results by lunch on the first day of posting.

(2) Write posts with no regard for the hook.

(3) Be terrified of saying anything remotely divisive.

(4) Never repeat a topic or take.

(5) Leave 0 comments on others' posts.

(6) DM nobody.

(7) Only post bottom-of-funnel product updates.

(8) Only post top-of-funnel material.

(9) Use AI to draft posts end-to-end.

(10) Track nothing.

(11) Completely outsource the creation process.

(12) Obsess over posting time and other LinkedIn "hacks".

(13) Join an engagement group.

(14) Write when I want instead of building a system.

(15) Compare myself to huge accounts.

(16) Send 0 connection requests.

(17) Format my posts like LinkedInfluencers.

What did I miss?

If your New Year's resolution was to post more on social but you don't know what to post about, here are 20 post ideas:

1. What are outdated strategies your ICP is trying to use to achieve their dream result?

2. Share your company’s origin story in detail.

3. What’s one trend in your industry you don’t like and why?

4. List five to 10 pro tips your ICP can use to get the desired result.

5. Share an early failure you had with your company. How did you overcome it?

6. What is an industry prediction your peers disagree with you on?

7. What’s your favorite interview question to ask a candidate, and why?

8. Share a case study of a successful client.

9. What are the top 5–10 traits of an [ICP job title]?

10. Pick the most common FAQ you get from prospects and answer it.

11. Share a growth strategy you didn’t think would work but did.

12. What’s your company’s tech stack? Tag the companies.

13. Highlight a specific feature or part of your service and why it helps your ICP.

14. Comment on relevant news in your industry. Make sure to add value here.

15. Share an unconventional behind-the-scenes story of how you grew your company.

16. What’s your favorite founder framework that helped you grow your business?

17. List every stat your ICP should track and why.

18. What is the ROI of using your product or service? Illustrate it.

19. What’s one recruiting take or opinion people will disagree with you on?

20. Share a hot take around your industry / space.

We generated 83 high-intent lead magnet opt-ins for a client, many of which from massive logos, using something I see nowhere on LinkedIn.

*I say "high-intent", as submissions were only counted after prospects went through 15+ questions (in which they let us know exactly what they were struggling with in relation to our client's product.

This is NOT your typical "I got 4,000 leads from this lead magnet" post.

We got 83 qualified* people who put their hand up and voluntarily filled out 17 questions worth of information about their pain points in relation to the client's product.

Here's what we did:

1. Brainstormed an idea for an interactive lead magnet their ICP could fill out and receive something at the end of.

2. Came up with 17 questions prospects could answer that would help get to their desired outcome (we did this by combining source knowledge + directly asking the client for his expertise).

3. Used Tally to make an interactive lead magnet with name + email + qualification questions on Page 1, and toggled partial submissions. 

4. Ran it as a comment-to-get giveaway on the founder's LinkedIn.

5. Followed-up with commenters who didn't fill out the lead magnet for ~1 week after the fact.

NOTE: This is without* putting spend behind this post or enrolling prospects into a nurture sequence.

You're one of the luckiest people alive if you can still share a meal, crack open a bottle or answer a phone call from your folks.

I realize now how massive of a blessing that is.

I vividly remember flying back to Abidjan in spring 2017 after three years of not seeing my dad (was living abraod). I recall him coming up to my room to check in on me, and for some reason, I just asked him to tell me his story.

He legit looked at me like I had three heads.

To be fair, who actually goes around asking people "So... wHaT'S yOuR StOrY", lol. I immediately felt awkward the second I heard those words leave my mouth.

But, to my surprise, he started opened up. He started telling me about his life, and I just shut up, listened and followed his lead.

I think that conversation was a big turning point in our entire relationship.

Everything just kept getting better from there. He last came to visit us last fall, and I don't think I've ever seen him as happy as he was when he was hanging with my kids.

He is legit one of my best friends now. We talk business. We swap marriage advice. We roast each other constantly.

Words can't capture the joy that comes from having that kind of friendship with my father as a man.

I suspect a lot of us would access deeper joy if we could just get over the fear of a few difficult conversations. Life (and work) is much better on the other side of those imo.

One of my goals in life is to become more 'interruptible' and lean more into serendipity. Thing is, I’m wired to do the exact opposite. I also know for fact that   there’s deeper joy and a fuller experience of life for those who embrace the unexpected.

I was hustling through some content and this little human gently pulled my computer down. 

It’s one of the perks of working from home - and excellent (sometimes, too excellent) training on my path to becoming a more interruptible human 🙂

SALT LAKE CITY IS UNREAL 

For those keeping tabs back at the ranch, I used all my credit card points to book a non refundable ticket to SLC last Friday. Caught wind of an interesting event with (potentially) a good concentration of ICPs and wanted to find more people we can serve. 

I had zero connections. This was going to be my first time in that part of the world. And I barely made it, like - inside the airport, checked in, and almost missed the flight. 

TL;DR - lost my passport after checking in. Didn’t realize it until 10 min before gate closure. The airport found it, they called me prior, but this man didn’t hear because he was too busy working. Imagine that. Anyhow, I made it, and i’m glad I did because what I experienced was quite special: 

- Wound up sitting right next to one of keynote speaker on the flight from Denver to SLC. Also happened to be coming from Montreal. What are the odds? Anyhow, that was cool.

- I had to go to the bathroom and let cold water drip down my fingers a few times to muster up enough courage to go and talk to strangers. But once I did, cool things happened.

- People were *insanely* generous with their connections. One guy I met at the event, Garret, literally grabbed me and intro'd me to every hotshot he knew. So kind. 

- The whole event was about entrepreneurs sharing their major failures. super inspiring. Shoutout to FailedFest. 

SO WHAT ABOUT COLD ROI?

Relax, Bob.

4 leads. One said they needed help with LinkedIn ASAP. Two gave me their contact to and are open to talk shop. And one who needs support on the strategy side. Worth it for me, but -- 

Even if no one closes, I still feel like it was a good investment. 

SLC is so beautiful. The people are so kind. There's a bunch of cool things happening in this city. I really hope we'll get the chance to serve some people there. And the food was good

Shopify rejected this guy 7 times before he finally landed the gig. He then quit after 2 years, grew his LinkedIn from 0 to 374k followers, and drove $3.5M+ from the platform. Absolute madness. Here's his exact playbook:

How’s THAT for a hook haha?

I won’t be sharing his playbook, feel free to ask him 😅 . It’s been just shy of a year since I traded working in tall buildings downtown and wearing beige suits  for coffee shops and WFH.

It’s great, but I miss being able to walk into people all the time. Fixing that this year with more irl meetings.

Got to catch up with the homie Tobi while zooming through Toronto a few weeks back. I get so much energy from these. If you happen to be passing by the greatest city in north america (Montreal of course), hit me up!

If my CEO asked me to grow his LinkedIn presence to get more people to know our brand and book calls our biggest prospects, here's how I'd do it in 60-90 days:

1. Get access to my CEO's LinkedIn account and purchase Sales Navigator. This is safe. LinkedIn knows Execs work with people to manage their accounts.

2. Build a custom list of our top 50 accounts within Sales Nav.

3. Still using Sales Nav, I'll create a leads list of ALL decision makers influencing the buying process in those target accounts. If  we're selling a $80K ACV product to Finance teams, I'll include the CFO, CIO, CISO, FP&A Managers, etc.  

4. Going forward, I'll start sending 15 connection requests a day from my CEO's account to everyone on that list. We'll aim to send 400 connection requests per month.

5. As more we're getting more decision makers connected with my CEO, next step is updating his profile:

- Clean, inviting headshot
- Banner with our company's value prop + social proof
- Clear tagline articulating what we do and for whom
- Updated costumed button link for "visit my website"
- Updated featured section with a link to book a demo + case studies

The idea here is to turn my CEO's LinkedIn profile into a landing page and redirect traffic to our site.

6. Once the profile is fixed we'll start creating content that our ICP would save. I'll start by scheduling 30 min to interview my CEO every two weeks.

7. Before the interview, I'll brainstorm content buckets and interview questions:

(a) Expertise: What's a widely accepted 'best practice' in our industry that you believe is actually hurting most companies?

(b) Product: What's the biggest benefit you've seen clients get from using our product?

(c) Company: What drove you to start this company in the first place? When did you realize this was a problem worth devoting your work life to?

I'll prepare 5-7 interview questions per call, make sure the call is recorded and transcribed, and use my CEO's answers to draft the LinkedIn posts.

8. After the posts are approved, I'll start posting 2-5 times a week on his behalf. Seems like a lot, but people see hundreds of posts daily. We want to remain top of mind for buyers.

9. Also, using the leads list in step 3,  I'll track which prospects are posting on LinkedIn and have my CEO comment their posts. Seems trivial but it's not. 5-10 posts a week. 30 min max.

10. After a few weeks of both posting and adding buyers to my CEO network, I'll start tracking warm content engagers. Anyone who fits our ICPs/decision makers who has:

- Viewed my CEO profile
- Liked one of my CEO's posts
- Commented on one of my CEO's post...

is no longer cold. I'll create a list of anyone who fit that criteria. we can either do this manually or with a tool like Trigify.io

This is a real post from LinkedIn's founder. The guy who built the $26 billion platform. He spelled out exactly why he built it, and why 99% of users are still missing the point.

"We built the platform to support individuals in growing their economic power by finding good jobs, building strong networks, and finding inspiration to be entrepreneurial."

I landed my dream job in 2021 because of LinkedIn. I left that dream job to start a company (storyengineers.co) in 2025 because of LinkedIn. I'm pretty much the poster child of this statement.

I by no means have the corner on this, but from living it myself and helping founders drive real revenue from this platform, this is what growing your economic power on LinkedIn looks like in practice:

(1) Send 10-15 connection requests a day.

You get these allocations for free. So send them to partners or investors with a brief note. This consistency expands your network by thousands of people a year. In a year, that's 3,650 new potential connections. Your network expands and opportunities follow.

(2) Post 2-3x a week.

You don't need to go viral and you don't need to be a thought leader. Just talk about what you're learning at work, the problems you're solving, and the impact you're having. What do you think will happen if you prospects in your network start seeing you sharing about the way you're solving the problems *they* have?

(3) Comment on posts from people you want to work with.

I've made $30k from commenting on my ICP's posts. Made friends. Got clients. Got intros. A thoughtful comment puts you on someone's radar and helps you stay top of mind.

(4) DM people.

Start conversations. Make intros. Collaborate. Sell. LinkedIn DMs have a higher open rate than email, and yet most people never send one.

This platform changed the trajectory of my career and then my business. We're still super early with this. There's simply no better way to build trust at scale with customers, partners and your team.

I've written/edited an insufferable amount of LinkedIn posts in 2025. If you’ve ever tried to write a LinkedIn post and lost an hour with no result, you’re not alone. Despite what everyebody says: WRITING IS HARD. 

Writing compelling stuff is harder.

Writing well is a distinct skill, and most of us weren't taught how to do it for social media. And when you give AI to unskilled writers, you have, well, all the LinkedIn content that makes you cringe.

So if you're a Founder/Exec/IC who struggles to write LinkedIn posts, you're in good company. I hope these 3 things will help make it easier:

(1) Capture ideas before you start writing.

The worst time to come up with something to say is when you're staring at a blank screen. Keep a running list throughout your week:

- A surprising conversation
- A lesson from a deal that almost fell apart
- A take you shared in Slack that got people fired up

That way, when you sit down to write, you're choosing from a list instead of inventing from scratch. It makes the whole process faster.

(2) Pay attention to what LinkedIn rewards.

Something can mean a lot to you but still fail to resonate with your audience (ask me how I know 🙃).

Study a handful of founders or execs in your space, and in other industries. Notice the topics they talk about. Filter what resonates, then share your take on those (from time to time). This content is validated. You now get to play in lanes that others have already proven to work.

(3) Partner with someone who can help.

There's no shame in having a team member, content partner, or agency help you write. You wouldn't build your own CRM. You're not designing your own website. You likely have someone helping with paid ads. Writing (especially on LinkedIn) can work the same way.

Listen Labs announced a $100M raise last week. 2 days later, their CEO said inbound was "nonstop."

Nonstop !??? I had to check this thing out. 

The interesting thing is, the fundraise itself didn't cause the pipeline surge. Their LinkedIn launch strategy did. I took about 30min last Friday pm to study what they've done well with their lunch, and took a few notes:

(1) The announcement came from the CEO's personal profile - NOT the company page.

Some people still raise their eyebrows when I suggest focusing on personal brands/pages first, so this is worth its own point.

Alfred Wahlforss ( their CEO) shared from his personal LinkedIn account about why they raised, the traction they’ve gained, and the results they’ve achieved for customers. He also paired his LinkedIn post with a high-quality product explainer video. Nice.

Major announcements should *always* come from the CEO account. This is a pattern for most successful launches accross LinkedIn/X.

(2) They treated their VCs as a distribution channel.

They had their investors post about the raise, and the posts weren't templated at all. Each investor shared stories about why they invested and what the team meant to them. Those investors have networks full of companies that need @Listen labs product. Having them post adds a ton of credibility and likely drove significant inbound for them. Good stuff.

(3) EGC - but with a little twist. 

This one was clever. Similar to the VC play, they had several ICs share their own stories. But they were very shrewd with one thing:

They had new employees post about joining the company right after the raise! Why is this the smartest thing?

Well, if you know nothing about LinkedIn, you at least know that career updates posts tend to get higher than average reach. Consequently, this was a killer move.

Listen Labs ran three motions at once with this launch:

— Founder-led content
— Investor-generated content
— Employee-generated content

They got the world to hear about them, which drove weeks worth of inbound. Now they're hiring AEs to keep up with demand.

As someone who runs a LinkedIn content agency, I know it takes a fair amount of brain juice to coordinate this level of execution - incredibly well done.

We thought we had a banger post. Spicy take, interesting angle and the client loved it. It flopped. Worst-performing post since we started working together. 

A few notes:

The post was about a core product feature -- something that powers their entire platform. The client had a sharp, differentiated take on it. We captured it on video, wrote it up, and shipped it.

And boy did it tank. 

We wrote posts that drove over 300 engagements and 30k+ impressons for this client (that is per post), so wanted to make sure I reflect on this one. Here's what I think went wrong:

(1) Product posts already get lower reach -- but without a story + a (VERY) compelling "so-what" there's very little for people to grab onto. The thesis was interesting, but we probably should've leaned more on the so what for customers.

(2) On media, we had the CEO walking through the thinking behind the product. Honestly, I think that was solid. But looking back, maybe a live demo might've worked better? Showing the thing working instead of just talking through the philosophy. Still feeling meh about this one.

(3) We should've leaned harder into the first rule of product content: nobody cares about your product. They care about what it changes for them. Notes taken for the next time. 

Anyway, where does that leave us?

Well, nothing humbles you like the timeline.

You can have years of experience, a sharp strategy, full client buy-in and LinkedIn still says "nah". Still, that *is* the game. 

You experiment, take notes and adjust. And hopefully, the more you do so, the closer your get to learning and delivering on content that your audience cares about, and move the needles for your business.

CEO of a $30M+ ARR business. 50+ FTEs. Changed hundreds of lives with his company, and yet he stood on a stage in front of ~80 people sharing this:

"I'm just *now* getting comfortable sharing my story."

"I still feel very insecure about sharing what we’ve done."

Whoa. Okay, three thoughts:

- First off, I respect the heck out of that level of humility. And the very reason why this Founder should be sharing his thoughts on LinkedIn is because he has that level of humility.

- Second, he's accumulated so much lived experience. It automatically legitimizes his content. He'll be playing it on easier mode.

Lastly, there's simply no other platform that will give him the kind of leverage LinkedIn does. We see it often with clients. No other platform helps you build trust at scale with your customers, team, and prospects - all at once.

And this is why I love what we do.

In an ideal world, I'd actually fire myself from my business.

Take that back. My business wouldn't even exist. All of our clients will be crafting their own content and writing their own narratives.

In that same ideal world though, all of us will be cooking our own meals, driving ourselves everywhere, and Uber will go bankrupt.
