I talk about digital writing & personal progress

Here's a quick rundown of how I've spent my last 5 years:

1. Studied math and played football at Princeton. I graduated in 2018 with a degree in financial engineering and played center for the Tigers. In college, I was a 280-pound offensive lineman, so for the last 5 years, I've had to completely rewrite my personal operating system on the health & fitness front. I currently weigh 185 pounds and have learned a lot along the way!

2. Graduated and immediately started working for BlackRock in New York City. I worked as a junior hedge fund trader for 4 years, focusing on global macro markets. This was my dream job and the only corporate job I've ever had. In fact, it's the only job *interview* I've ever had (since I interned there as a junior in college).

3. Realized working for someone else was not going to be the long-term path for me. 12 months into working on Wall Street, I saw someone in their mid-40s ask their boss for permission to go to their son's Little League game. At that moment I realized I wasn't cut out to take directions or instructions from other people for very long.

4. Started to write on my old blog, then on Twitter. Rather than quit immediately, I started to passively explore other opportunities by writing online, starting out on my old blog (which no one knew existed), then transitioning to Twitter in July of 2020.

5. Changed my trajectory with a 30-day writing challenge, which led me to start Ship 30 for 30. In September 2020 I was ready to give up writing entirely. But I gave it one more shot, this time moving from a weekly blog post to a daily Twitter thread. The challenge was a huge success. It took me 9 months to reach 100 followers and 1 month to go from 100 to 2,000. And that personal writing challenge turned into the foundation of Ship 30 for 30, which started as nothing but a Slack accountability group to help people publish consistently.

6. Scaled Ship 30 while working remotely for all of 2021. I built and scaled Ship 30 with Nicolas Cole to over 2,000 students in 2021—all while continuing to work full-time (remotely) for BlackRock. But towards the end of 2021, Ship 30 hit an inflection point and it no longer made financial sense for me to continue working on Wall Street.

7. Left BlackRock in March of 2022 to write and build on my own. After weeks of weighing the pros and cons and trying to project my path forward, I made the decision to leave BlackRock and chart my own path. 15 months into making that decision and I'm confident it's the best one I've ever made.

I used to have one severe addiction:

Planning.

My brain loved the cheap dopamine of gathering:

• Books to read
• Tasks to complete
• And videos to watch

But when it came to taking action, the euphoric rush faded.

What ended my addiction?

This story of two men learning to fish:

The first fisherman heads straight to the marina to buy the best fishing boat money can buy.

He specs out a custom, carbon fiber rod.

And he spends time reading up on everything there is to know about fishing:

• Casting techniques
• Baiting techniques
• Reeling techniques

You name it, he's bought the book on it.

And of course, he's watching the fishing channel every night for hours, learning from the best of the best.

A few months later, he finally feels ready to fish.

The next day, he heads out on the lake in his new boat with his fancy rod and wealth of fishing "experience" built up over the last few months.

But six hours in, nothing. Not even a nibble.

What happened?

Turns out, the second fisherman had already sucked the lake dry.

On day one, the second fisherman grabbed a shitty rod, sliced up a hot dog, and went out to the lake.

• The first day, nothing
• Second day, nothing
• Third day, nothing
• One week, nothing

But on the eighth day? His first nibble.

And every day after, he honed his technique.

He found a baiting technique that worked a bit better. Or a new spot with a few more fish.

And after three weeks of iteration, he found the winning combination.

Before long, he was hauling in hundreds of fish every day. To keep up with his daily haul, he hired a small team to help him. And from there, he opened a restaurant with fat margins to sell his fresh fish.

And after that, he opened a fishing school to teach others his craft.

He did all of this while the first fisherman sat around gathering gear.

Sure, the first fisherman felt productive. He was "learning" after all, right?

But there was one difference: feedback.

Every day the second fisherman had an idea of something that might work better. And he went right to the market to validate his assumption. If it worked, his strategy improved. And if it failed, he learned something new.

The moral of this story?

Get to action as quickly as possible.

When you find yourself gathering gear, grab a shitty rod and start fishing.

2. Read all the books
3. Apply none of them

8 PM. Pen and paper. Three minutes.

They write down their wins from the day. Big ones. Small ones. The ones they have to dig for when the day went sideways.

Then they dump every priority floating around their head onto paper. Get them out. Stop the mental loops. Move from sympathetic to parasympathetic.

Finally, gratitude. Not just what they're grateful for. They think about when someone was grateful for what they did. Try it. You'll end with a smile you didn't expect.

That's the Victory Lap. Ending the day on your terms.

Large glass of water waiting from the night before. Quality salt. Fresh lemon. Your body's been without water for 7-8 hours. This isn't optional.

Same journal. Coffee brewing. You review last night's notes.

The priorities you dumped? Now you sort them. The gratitude notes? The smile returns. You're already winning in the mindset department.

You review your Alpha 5 standards. Set your eating intentions. Protein-centric. Real food. Maybe you decide each meal right now. Either way, you're not winging it.

Training time gets blocked. Sacred. No calls. No clients. No negotiations.

Seductive. Soothing. Convincing.

That voice has a name. Steven Pressfield calls it 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. Dr. Phil Stutz calls it 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗫.

I call it the villain in your story.

And make no mistake—you ARE in a story. Right now. Whether you know it or not.

In the Hero's Journey, every hero faces a villain. An obstacle. A force trying to keep them from their destiny.

That voice whispering sweet sabotage? That's yours.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱:

Naming your enemy changes the game.

When you recognize Resistance for what it is—not wisdom, not self-care, but sabotage—you can fight it.

When you see Part X as the villain trying to keep you small, you stop negotiating with it.

The men thriving in our community didn't get there by accident. They found guides. Built teams. Created systems stronger than their excuses.

Because heroes don't win alone. They never have.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲:

Identify your villain. Name it. Then find your guide.

The success you deserve is on the other side of that seductive voice.

Most men your age are settling. Coasting. Accepting the narrative that decline is normal.

Comfortable? Sure.
Alive? Barely.

I see it every day. Men who've given up without admitting it. They show up with their C game and call it "being realistic."

They don't know what they're capable of because they stopped testing themselves decades ago.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝟲𝟬:

The world doesn't need another average 60-year-old. It needs men who refuse to accept that bullsh*t story about aging.

The men in Argent Alpha? They're getting their first pull-up after 60. Many hitting double digits. Starting businesses they "should have" launched decades ago.

One guy told me last week: "I haven't weighed this since college." He's 62.

Not because they're special. Because they rejected average.

They challenged the limiting beliefs they'd been carrying for 40 years. Stopped accepting "that's just how it is at my age."

Average is a choice. 𝗦𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

The difference? One requires you to wake up. To fight the voice that says "good enough." To stop hiding behind age as an excuse.

You want to know what you're capable of? Stop settling. Start pushing. Find men who won't let you coast.

Because mediocrity at our age isn't just boring.

It's the beginning of the end.

You can't outrun a garbage diet. Trust me, I tried.

Abs aren't made on the bench press. They're revealed in the kitchen.

80% whole foods. Adequate protein. Strategic carbs. That's where transformation starts.

The gym? That's where you build the muscle that keeps you from becoming fragile. But without the nutrition dialed in, you're just a strong guy with inflammation.

You've got 5 standards to master:
🧠 Mindset
🛏️ Sleep
🥩 Nutrition
🏋️♂️ Fitness
💧 Hydration

Try to attack all five at once? You'll flame out by day 12. I've watched it happen a thousand times.

But pick ONE. Just one.

Then ask: "What's the least I can do today?"

• Walk for 10 minutes? Do it.
• Drink one extra glass of water? Done.
• Go to bed 15 minutes earlier? Victory.
• Skip one beer? Win.
• Write three things you're grateful for? Locked in.

The men in Argent Alpha who transform their lives don't start with heroic efforts. They start with embarrassingly small commitments.

So small they can't fail.

The result: I have bad day 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 from time to time. But I avoid bad days.

Because something beats nothing. Every single time.

Last Tuesday my day imploded before noon. Old me would've written it off. Grabbed a beer. Started fresh tomorrow.

Instead, I found my wins:
- Showed up to my workout (late but got it done)
- Hit the sauna, shaved, showered. Total reset.
- Caught up with one of our members and he pumped me up.

Small? Sure. But they were there. They're always there if you look.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

When I wake up, those Victory Lap notes are waiting. Not yesterday's failures. Not the perfect plan that fell apart.

Just proof that I ended on my terms. That I found wins when everything felt lost. That I'm already one move ahead.
