You would NOT believe the interviews I had last weeks. 🤯 
Serious red flag -> Interview over. 

Ok, let me rewind. 
In every interview, I set out little "baits" to get to know the candidates beyond their CVs. 😈 

Say, introduction. 
I talk about my being a parent, where I live (how quiet it is), that I've been a field hockey coach, and then go into my career paths.....sometimes I throw in a few controversial ideas to see what sticks...

All of these to get the candidates to start interacting with me. 

I want to see what they pick up to connect with. Sometimes it's the weather, sometimes it's the family stuff, and sometimes it's purely just interest in what I do. 

We'd both get a sense of how it is to work with each other every day. 

But last week.... The candidates did NOT bite. 
They simply started reading stuff off from their CVs. 
In 2010 I did this, in 2011 I did that.... 

I believe there are two types of people in interviews: 
1/ the kind of people I want to hire 
2/ the kind of people I don't want to hire. 

It doesn't matter how good you are technically. 
Some may argue ;-) AI can execute faster, better. 

But I want to hire someone who can have dialogues, who can connect with people; someone who can work in a team of non AI-agents (for now). 

Am I "old-school", "asking for too much" or are we as tech professional, not emphasising enough the importance of building relationships?

Need insights from the SaaS crowd: 

It does feel like the whole SaaS industry is living off lurking customers into overpaying. And people are tired of it. 

Frankly, building solutions have become so cheap, and will become even faster and more cost-effective with AI.  What I used to finish in 3-4 days, now I can build it in 6 hours. 

I can see the lucrative SaaS pricing models (esp. on enterprise level) dwindling this year. 

So, where does that leave us? 
 
How do we thrive when clients prefer building something in-house, rather than subscribing to another SaaS with more features than they actually need?

It's delegation. 

Not just handing stuff off to your team, but also knowing when to let AI handle the grunt work, so you can focus on high-level, leadership thinking. 

As a fractional CTO working with SaaS companies atm, I see a clear divide: 

1/ senior devs who "stay in their lane" and focus on coding
2/ senior devs who think like a leader and concern themselves with setting requirements and scaling with AI. 

When I build and scale tech teams for SaaS companies, I invest heavily in developers who can handle spec-driven development. 

They operate on a different level, and those are the ones I keep when we need to make cuts. Because they see the end game beyond "coding", and they make themselves irreplaceable. 

2026 - Let's stop discussing whether AI will replace developers. 

The question in an unstable tech job market is: how exactly will you use AI to multiply your impact for any company.

Yes, I'm planning holidays and conference trips for 2026. It's never too early. 

I traveled a lot in 2025, both for work and with my family. And I loved it. 

Nothing can replace having face-to-face conversations with fellow tech peers and being immersed in different cultures. 

This year, the only place that I've been begged to visit (thanks to all the K-drama, K-movies and K-pop) is South Korea :-)

But I'm looking for tech conferences/SaaS networking events to attend. 
Any good suggestions?

Hiring a SaaS CTO? Here are the things you should be looking for. 

We talk a lot about SaaS health signals (people, product, tech), scaling frameworks, architectures, etc. 

Sure, these things really matter. But if I'm being honest, that's not what made the difference in my career as a SaaS CTO, and now, a SaaS advisor. 

What really made the difference is the ability to: 

- see the whole picture with all of its moving parts
- connect the dots across wishes, capabilities and resources
- seeing patterns (they seem to repeat themselves) and turn all of that into a clear roadmap. 

IMO the most important thing is:
👉 People alignment.

True people alignment looks like this: 

> Shared priorities (CEO,CTO,Product Lead, Stakeholders need the same list) 
> Clarity of roles (everyone knows who owns what) 
> Respect for capacity and scope (Don't ask for "AI features" before Christmas if you are not willing to hire more, reallocate team, or re-prioritze) 

Sounds simple enough. But in reality, there's a lot to juggle, especially for CEOs and CTOs who just graduated from Startup status to join the Scaleup Leagues. 

Find a mentor or network with people who have done it many times before. If one thing I'm sure of, is that, many of my peers love to share their journey and experiences scaling up SaaS.

They see it as a way to help juniors develop their own thinking and hone their craft.
