As the Content Marketing Manager at Vengreso, I was at the helm of driving the strategy to generate qualified leads for our sales team.  This strategy included:

As the Senior Content Writer, I created original blog content, guides, e-books, case studies, press releases, and other long-form content. "Do you think you're qualified for your job?"

I was 25, sitting across from our new CRO who'd just introduced himself as "The Bulldog."

I was 7 months into my first enterprise role. Zero deals closed. 

"I've seen your numbers," he said. "I don't think you should be in this role."

I could've nodded along. Could've apologized. Instead I said:

"The guy before you recruited me. Promised to prepare me for this role. I don't know what I'm doing, so you can help me or just cut me now."

He chose neither.

No mentoring. No firing. Just left me hanging with that question burning in my head.

That conversation taught me what terrible leadership looks like:

Bad leaders tear you down. Great leaders build you up.

When someone's struggling, you have two choices:
1. Question their worth
2. Question how you can help

Now as a leader when I see someone struggling on my team, I remember that 25-year-old sitting across from The Bulldog. 

And I ask myself a different question:

"How can I help them become qualified?"

Because that's what real leaders do.

They don't ask if you belong.

They help you prove that you do.
