Some rivers carry water.
Some rivers carry stories.

This one carries hope.

There was a time when singles would gather by this river during Chinese New Year. They would write their contact numbers on Mandarin oranges… and toss them into the water. 🍊

The belief?

That destiny would do the rest.

If someone picked up your orange, perhaps love had found its way to you.

Long before dating apps, algorithms, and swipe culture — there was courage, faith, and a handwritten number on a simple fruit.

What strikes me most is this:

They didn’t know who would receive it.
They didn’t know if anyone would respond.
They simply chose to believe.

In a world that now demands certainty, data, and guarantees… there is something beautiful about that kind of hope.

Sometimes life — and even relationships — require us to release control, let go, and trust the current.

Who knows?

Maybe the right connections still find us — not by perfect planning, but by quiet courage.

Yesterday was Ren Ri, everyone’s birthday in the Chinese tradition. So of course we were standing up, chopsticks in hand, shouting wishes for health, promotions and lottery wins while tossing yu sheng as high as we dared. It is loud, messy, borderline unsafe for the tablecloth, and one of the most beautiful rituals of community I know.

These little cultural moments matter at work too. If you want real inclusion, you cannot just know someone’s job title. You need to understand what they celebrate, the words they shout over a salad once a year, and the stories that shaped them.
