8 years ago I made the best decision of my life...



I had just finished University but there was only one thing on my mind - to travel the world.

I left the UK for what I intended to be a year of experiential learning, however, after nearly a decade away from my home country, the learning has never stopped.

After landing in Madrid 5 years ago, I started coaching CEO- level executives using tailored business English language. Teaching was never something I was passionate about but I enjoyed the business aspect.

I had business knowledge combined with teaching experience so I started my own small Business English academy with a focus on marketing and growing the business.

Whilst working 10 hours a day as a Growth Marketer at Wayra, Telefonica, I spent an extra 2 hours in the evening working on my academy - Cordli.

The hard work paid off.

My academy doubled year on year until after 4 years, I had 100 students with one of the biggest banks in Spain.

Then the pandemic hit. Another pivot.

After 5 years of working in marketing and growth, I wanted to add another skill to my arsenal - sales.

I started working for a B2B sales consultancy.

We created a peer learning platform for sales professionals to network, learn, and grow together through expert masterclasses, virtual roundtables, and peer-to-peer sessions. I've personally grown our community to 5000+ members in 50+ countries.

The journey so far has hugely influenced who I am now.

who are beginning a new life here. Community members can help newcomer families who
came to Canada as government-assisted refugees get settled within Kingston.

○ Helping the family learn the Kingston Transit system
○ Helping the family learn where to shop, along with other social and informal

Canada isn’t the country it thinks it is.

We love to say Canada “takes care of its people.”
That we’re compassionate.
That we have strong public systems.

But the truth is… a massive portion of the care Canadians rely on isn’t delivered by government at all. It’s delivered by nonprofits — quietly, consistently, and often invisibly.

Here’s what the data actually says:
📌 136,000+ nonprofits operate across Canada, running everything from food banks to crisis lines to youth programs.
📌 In late 2023, while other sectors stagnated, nonprofits’ real GDP still grew.
📌 Employment in social services jumped 2.6%, because community care keeps expanding where systems fall short.

That’s not charity.
That’s infrastructure.
That is Canada’s safety net.
And most people don’t know it.

This became heartbreakingly clear to me this summer. I angry-cried at 2am as two close friends — smart, kind, compassionate people — told me they believed most nonprofit leaders were corrupt and overpaid.

They’d read one bad headline.
They’d heard one lousy story.
And suddenly the entire sector looked suspicious.

These two smart, middle class Canadians had no idea what was run by nonprofits as I rhymed off local resources....

We’ve shown up so consistently… that we’ve become invisible.

And when people can’t see you, they don’t fight for you.
They don’t advocate for policy. They don’t fund the thing keeping their community afloat.
That invisibility is a Canadian blind spot and its hurting nonprofits.

So when CharityVillage published my article this week — of all weeks — it felt like perfect timing. (I wrote this back in the summer!)

Because if you’ve ever:
• used a food hamper
• relied on a parenting program
• had a teen in a mentorship group
• leaned on a mental health line
• accessed harm reduction supports
• attended a community class, camp, or cultural program — you’ve likely been held by a nonprofit.

Not a government department. Not a corporate program. A nonprofit.

Someone’s neighbour. Someone’s grandmother. Someone’s burnt-out frontline worker on a one-year contract. Someone doing their best to keep your community intact.

Nonprofits aren’t “nice-to-haves.”
They’re essential services.
They’re Canada’s social infrastructure.
And it’s time we talked about that publicly.

If you’re inside the sector: Your work is not invisible. Even when it feels like it.
If you’re outside the sector: I hope this challenges you to see the care you rely on differently.

And if you want that care to continue?

Dear Canada: Your safety net runs on nonprofits

Like many, I was JAZZED when AI showed up for the nonprofit world.

We've been lagging behind on pretty much all the metrics that "matter" (according to for-profit) and here was a quick, fairly cheap, tech solution we could all jump on.

To level "up" and "catch-up".

As a marketer in small businesses for the last few decades, I cannot tell you how much it has changed my work for the better.

But, as usual, for-profit grabbed this tech gift and is now running circles around us nonprofiteers AGAIN.

And the sad thing I am seeing in the push to adopt AI in nonprofit as quickly as possible is that this sector is using AI enabled tools to try and automate the best part of this work.

To send email to thousands that feels "personalized" so we can "grow and scale" but never giving time to staff to do the connecting, emphasizing and belonging that this sector has been built on.

To keep teams "lean" because 1 staff person can now do the work of 3 thanks to AI but no one is asking how 1 person can hold the relationships of 3 staff.

I wrote this article recently for Candid inspired by some of the brilliant work of two women in this sector I admire (Meenakshi (Meena) Das and Michelle Flores Vryn, CFRE) because nonprofit can't afford trust to be broken in our work.

Not now, not for a temporary fundraising win, not ever.

AI gives us a chance to remind ourselves what truly matters. That the most valuable currency will be human authenticity and connection.
