Don't get me wrong, having alternative dates is a great thing. But not having a date in mind and asking someone to provide a large swath of availability options isn't reasonable.

Winter Travel Tip - Stick to your hotel's restaurants instead of the random hallway sampler trays.

Someone I just met told me, “I feel like I know you.”  
Me: "Have you been reading my diary?"
Because dad jokes.

Because when people feel like they know you:

Boring posts = crickets. 
Personality posts = clicks, shares, bookings, and someone finally knowing what your hotel actually 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 like.

And then seeing things like bookings, F&B reservations, or tickets to events POP.

An influencer reached out to work with your hotel?
Here are some 🚩🚩🚩🚩 that you should politely turn them down.

🚫 "Me make good post!"
Grammar? Spelling? What's that? If they can't make words good in an email how can you trust them to professionally represent your brand?

🚫 "Hey there!"
If they open with a generic, impersonal "Hey there!" sent to your general sales inbox, it's not a heartfelt proposal, it's a mass email disguised as a love letter.

🚫 "Can't wait to film an epic sunset reel by your pool!"
But you don't have a pool. And you haven't seen the sun in months (okay, 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯'𝘵 seen the sun in months which explains my milky complexion)

🚫 "I have a great following."
But doesn't include social media links. The pros will share their profiles and perhaps a media kit.

What's a lesson you've learned from working with influencers?

My first thought was, "No way."
But it was true.
A free book, no strings attached. And what a book it is.

This book is a philosophical deep dive into wealth, health and happiness

Some great takeaways:

🔖 Play long-term games with long-term people. Invest in relationships.
🔖 Happiness is a state of mind, not a destination. Stop saying, "I'll be happy when..."
🔖 "If you can't decide, the answer is no."
🔖 Quantity of books read is a vanity metric. It's better to read 100 great books over and over to deeply understand them.
🔖 "Facebook redesigns. Twitter redesigns. Personalities, careers, and teams also need redesigns. There are no permanent solutions in a dynamic system."
🔖 "Forget rich versus poor, white-collar versus blue. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱." (my personal favorite takeaway)
🔖 Build specific knowledge that you can use to create leverage.

Your brand isn’t just a logo, it’s a personality. Consistency wins. If your vibe is “luxurious tranquility,” own it. If it’s “quirky and fun,” lean in. Just don’t be the hotel that tries to be everything and ends up looking like a carnival from hell.

I had coffee yesterday at Fernson Brewing Company with Kelli Bullert.  Kelli is a Senior Private Banker with First Bank & Trust, and she said something that stopped me for a second.

“Have you ever heard of private banking? You might already qualify and not even know it, simply because your bank doesn’t offer it.”

That led to a great conversation. 
What Is A “Private Banker”?

I quickly learned that a private banker is not a call center, a rotating relationship manager, or a 1-800 number when something matters. It is one dedicated person who knows your full financial picture and can move quickly when life or business happens. 

This is a level of service that seems to be less available over the years, where convenience and lower costs are replacing relationship value.

Had coffee yesterday with Chris Lidel, owner of Lidel Construction, and it turned into one of those small-world conversations.

I love moving dirt, and it turns out Chris's family has been doing it for a living for generations. Plus, his team developed the neighborhood where I own a lot. That caught me off guard and reminded me we had crossed paths during the development phase.

Lidel Construction does the kind of work most people never see, but everyone depends on. Site development, mass excavation, utilities, and the heavy civil work that turns raw ground into neighborhoods, roads, and real communities. They have been doing it for generations, and that experience shows in how they think, plan, and execute.

What stood out most was how intentional Chris is about doing things the right way. Quality work, strong crews, and long-term relationships with developers, municipalities, and builders who want it done once and done right.

It is always impressive to meet people who literally shape the ground our communities are built on.

Friday, I finally got to visit with Jennifer Falkenstein, founder of Into The Grey Consulting,  after being connected with her on LinkedIn for over 2 years. 

We met up at Coffea Roasterie & Espresso Bar downtown, and from the second I walked in, there was an instant calm with a friendly greeting waiting for me and a warm introduction like we were old friends. It had the vibe that makes you slow down, embrace your Friday, lean in, and actually get lost in conversation.

Coffee yesterday with Eric Anderson from Minnwest Bank was a great reminder of how long-term relationships really matter.

Eric and I first met over 20 years ago through the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, and it had been years since we had sat down one-on-one and it was like time never left us.  He was the same person, with the same integrity, just more experience behind him.

Eric has spent more than two decades as a Mortgage Loan Officer, and I was impressed by how intentional Minnwest Bank is about serving specific communities, not just selling loans. One thing we discussed was Minnwest’s Nurse Loan Program, a limited-time mortgage option designed for nurses and medical professionals with reduced origination fees that sounded amazing.

Minnwest is family-owned, has 30-plus locations across Minnesota and South Dakota, and more than 3 billion in assets, yet still operates with a strong relationship-first mindset.

Great catching up, Eric.

A fisherman buys a brand-new boat. Top-of-the-line setup, all the electronics. rod holders everywhere. 

He launches at sunrise. Drops a line. 
Waits. Nothing.

So, he moves. Drops again. Still nothing.
An hour in, he’s frustrated.
 
Blames the ocean.
Blames the season.
Blames the gear.
What did he skip?
 
Chumming the water.

The old guys know this.
You don’t just show up and fish.
You prep the spot.
You throw bait consistently.
Sometimes, for days before you get a bite.

At first, it feels pointless.
No splashes.
No action.
Just effort.

Then the water changes.
Fish start circling.
One bite. Then another.
Then the rod bends.

This is one of the lessons I learned on my last fishing trip to the Florida Keys, and the other thing I realized was...

That’s LinkedIn sales.

So, they drift.
They spam.
