I am .. A Sales Professional. Everyone is in sales, and selling is hard. But if you remember, selling is just a series of conversations between two people. In every conversation, there is an exchange of information and ideas, and the outcome of that conversation is to determine if it makes sense to have another conversation. I’ve sold everything from newspapers, ice cream, oracle databases, cloud applications, software companies, and even people (legally speaking). 

I am ... A Storyteller. Storytelling is one of the most human forms of communication. If you’re a good storyteller, you’re a good communicator. You can build deep and rich connections if you're a good communicator. Most people suck at telling stories because they don’t understand 1) the point of what they are trying to communicate and 2) the core mechanics necessary for a story to be considered a story and not just a sequence of events. I honed my storytelling skills at 5 years old when I started acting. It’s a skill that takes time, attention, and practice, but it will pay dividends for the rest of your life. 

I am ... A Connector. If selling, marketing, and storytelling are all about building connections, then I’m a connector! I believe that people make THE difference in any organization. In fact, in the last 7+ years as a partner at Emergence Capital, one of the first steps we took after we invested in a company was to determine if they had the right butts in the seats. If not, we’d help them identify who was the best fit for the company at the size and stage. Great leaders hire and build great teams, and great teams build amazing companies with lasting cultures.

I started my career as the first sales hire at a startup out of Stanford. I scaled TechValidate’s revenue org through an acquisition by SurveyMonkey in 2015. I moved to Jackson Hole in 2018 and became an enterprise rep and “ski bum” for a season and then founded UserEvidence with my long-time friend and co/worker Ray Rhodes in 2020. UserEvidence today has 48 employees across the globe with a Jackson headquarters, series A.

This might be the most excited I’ve been about a job opening at UserEvidence - we’re hiring our first Customer Marketer!

This is like building CS at Gainsight, or Demand Gen at Marketo, or RevOps at Clay - you’re building the customer marketing and advocacy function at the company that’s defining the customer marketing and advocacy function.

Obviously we believe that customers are a company’s biggest asset, and now that we’re crossing 200 enterprise customers, it’s high time we invest in someone to own customer marketing here.

We believe customer marketing has evolved way beyond just advocacy and content creation, and this role will be a critical revenue driver delivering pipeline, improving sales efficiency, driving retention (GRR + NRR), and activating our customers as our best sellers and advocates out in the market. In addition to advocacy, the role has some elements of community and lifecycle marketing. While requiring a wide skill set, we believe the modern customer marketer is capable of delivering a diverse but cohesive set of programs that create scaled value.

You’ll use UserEvidence as your OS, and inform our product roadmap - and you’ll be the living example (lots of Champagne and Dog Food ;) in the customer marketing and advocacy community of how to scale impact with technology and AI.

I love Product (like doing product work - not like "I love lamp"). Maybe b/c I've done sales most of my career so it's an interesting change of pace, but I love the strategy and the tradeoffs and the long-term payoff of making the right strategic bets.

We just did our FY27 Kickoff yesterday at UserEvidence - and here are a few key themes for our product strategy this upcoming year:

1) Going deep on core features and functionality - rather than wide with a lot of new features outside of our core competencies.

It's tempting, especially with more new logo sales pressure, and increasing competition, to just start shipping a lot more stuff. But in today's AI age, I think our prospects can vibe code MVP versions of a lot of that stuff anyway.

What they won't likely do is bring years of perspective and customer insights/feedback to going deep into delivering a constellation of features around a core workflow that is super polished, with a novel/differentiated data set, and enterprise data pipelines (MCP + AI) to/from other systems.

We're going back to V2s and V3s and V4s and V5s (I used the example of the rock/climbing bouldering grading scale to show when you get to V5+ you're gnarly) on a lot of our core features and areas - even if that means we don't get to do something new. When you have 200 customers product adoption, customer happiness, and GRR has to be the priority.

We are doing a lot of "new" features as well - but most of them are still squarely in our core areas (we have a lot of surface area anyway now with content/evidence, advocacy, references, community, and research)

2) Invest in product areas that have a confluence type halo boost effect on other product areas. E.g. for us - we're getting more sophisticated on the automated lifecyle feedback collection with an AI interviewer to get more depth/substance on customer feedback.

This improvement in response rate and depth/quality of feedback will not only improve our content creation abilities, but also contributes deeper context about Advocates that improves AI advocate and reference matching downstream.

You get double/triple benefit from a single product investment when the areas of your platform are integrated and there's a coherent relationship between key workflows.

We certainly haven't done everything right on the product front over the last 4 years, but that challenge has been a super fun and interesting learning opportunity for me.

And my sales background and the fact I talk to customers and prospects every day is definitely an advantage for what I think is the most important part of product work - prioritization and charting a path in a dynamic market.
