I am .. A Sales Professional. Everyone is in sales, and selling is hard. But if you remember, selling is just a series of conversations between two people. In every conversation, there is an exchange of information and ideas, and the outcome of that conversation is to determine if it makes sense to have another conversation. I’ve sold everything from newspapers, ice cream, oracle databases, cloud applications, software companies, and even people (legally speaking). 

I am ... A Marketer. Marketing is also hard. It’s a discipline that requires expertise in more areas than any other role in an organization. Marketing, like Sales, is all about closing/ expanding revenue. Brand, programs, and leads all matter, but we do these to help close revenue and keep / expand customers. To do this, marketing needs to align around the brand to raise awareness, programs to drive engagement, and content to help sellers and buyers navigate a decision. Marketing also involves crafting three narratives: the company narrative (why you exist), the marketing narrative (who you are and what you do), and the sales narrative (what problems you solve and what value you deliver).  

A Storyteller. Storytelling is one of the most human forms of communication. If you’re a good storyteller, you’re a good communicator. You can build deep and rich connections if you're a good communicator. Most people suck at telling stories because they don’t understand 1) the point of what they are trying to communicate and 2) the core mechanics necessary for a story to be considered a story and not just a sequence of events. I honed my storytelling skills at 5 years old when I started acting. It’s a skill that takes time, attention, and practice, but it will pay dividends for the rest of your life. 

A Connector. If selling, marketing, and storytelling are all about building connections, then I’m a connector! I believe that people make THE difference in any organization. In fact, in the last 7+ years as a partner at Emergence Capital, one of the first steps we took after we invested in a company was to determine if they had the right butts in the seats. If not, we’d help them identify who was the best fit for the company at the size and stage. Great leaders hire and build great teams, and great teams build amazing companies with lasting cultures.

Most of the time the jewelry benefited our local community college and funded scholarships, something we continue to support today! As a college student bopping off to St. Ambrose University (Go Bees) to chase my dream of becoming a star in marketing (is that a thing?), I got hooked on an advertising class headed by the late, brilliant professor Dr. Mark Brand. After winning two advertisement campaign contests in a row, I thought I had my path mapped out. I’d graduate, move to NYC, get a Carrie Bradshaw-style brownstone and create amazing commercials with the impact of Don Draper’s “Carousel” episode.

As Alanis would say, “Isn’t it ironic?” that I would end up doing the opposite and stay in my home state of Iowa; I somehow landed in an experimental inside sales development program that would go on to build my skills in business and prepare me for my current role. While learning the ropes in commercial furniture manufacturing, slinging chairs and desks and becoming aware of my poor posture via lessons in ergonomics - uncross your legs at your desk, it’s bad for your back -  I made some amazing connections and observed some legends in the world of business.

Fast forward a few years, I then met my husband and began living that Air Force spouse life that required frequent moves, thrusting me into the space of remote working, years before it was the standard. After starting a family, and catching up on sleep, post-newborn phase, I was ready to enter the workforce again. Hats off to my best friend who introduced me to Samantha McKenna at #samsales Consulting, who then took me under her wing. Since starting, I’ve worn multiple hats and have had a front row seat to the numerous facets it takes to build and run a successful small business. I’ve taken the tangible and soft skills I learned in inside sales and applied them to becoming an expert in the sales team development space. “Hello” to the fine art of a disco call, what it means to Show Me You Know Me, and to sharpening my tech stack knowledge -  specifically in LinkedIn, LinkedIn Sales Navigator and Outreach.io.

When I’m not virtually working alongside my energetic, hilarious and talented team, and reminding Sam which password she uses for her accounts, I like to spend time with my family, go for walks and hikes in our new neighborhood in Arizona, sing, re-watch all the Harry Potters for the seventh time, cook (watch the Gordon Ramsay series on MasterClass!), travel and stalk local influencers for the best restaurants in the area.
