How I blew up my profile as a chef
and pissed off the establishment.

When I moved to Toronto, I didn't know anyone.   

I was working for an early days social media company building facebook games. 

We combined it all. 

I made a fb contest. 

Random Draw once a week. 

I cook in your home for 4 people. No charge. As many courses as I want.

Guess who entered the contest? 

All the food bloggers and media types. 

They posted about their experience.

More people entered the contest. 

I got media coverage quickly. 

My ex (at the time) was a super talented media producer.  

She drew a roadmap to keep getting more media from my previous experience. 

I build a flywheel that fed itself.  

Within a a year I launched a supper club with one of the contest winners. 

Had a built-in audience. 

Other chefs were pissed. 

"Who is this guy?"

Most people never think big.

Not because they’re lazy.

Not because they’re scared.

But because no one ever taught them how.

We’re raised to play it safe.
Take the steady job.
Aim for “just enough.”

So when someone dreams of more—

We label it greedy.
Unrealistic.
Ego-driven.

The way I see it: 
You’re not wrong for wanting more.

You’re just thinking bigger than most people were ever allowed to.

And that’s exactly why you should.

Don’t shrink to make others comfortable.

Grow anyway. Build anyway. Want more anyway.

You don’t need permission.

You need clarity and conviction.

I wanted to get some perspective - so I built a two agent battleground.  

One agent was the book champion, the other agent was a critic. 

They debated. 

Who won?  

The reader.  

They get a better book. 

And I get to market faster. 

Who wants a book?

I got some good stories. 

Releasing the first couple chapters this week.

The Era of 10x growth is over.
Facebook ads no longer work
You can't DM anyone on LinkedIn anymore.
Nobody downloads lead magnets.

You might as close the doors and go work at Starbucks.

Building a business is impossible.... 

If you listen to all the people spewing this. 

None of these things are true of course. 

The world keeps evolving.  

Ad platforms change, LinkedIn Changes, People's tolerance changes.

You adapt and keep going. 

Most people haven't figured this out.  They just throw up their hands and stop growing their business.

These growth levers still work great. 

And there are so many more levers to pull these days. 

If you want to grow. 

Who still uses tools that "don't work anymore"?

What I hear over and over 
with people talking about scaling: 

They think it's fast, linear and working more.

All of those things are incorrect.

Scaling isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing less - the right less - better.

There’s no fast lane.  It's a process. 

You don't "get there".

"Hey bob, I've scaled". 💩 

We see someone blow up on SKool and think:

“That’s the playbook.”

It’s not.
It’s the exception parading as the rule.  

(If they have even blown up at all).

Simplicity and scale take discipline. And time.  And a bit of luck. 

And Product-Market-Fit.

So before you chase scale, remember:

It's a journey.  And there's no end.  

It's a way of being and doing, not a destination.

He took out a second mortgage for useless features.

“It needs one more thing before customers will use it.”

That was his mantra.
He spent 6 months building a recruiting platform.

He never validated witha customer.
He just kept building.
More features. More assumptions. More cash burned.

He ran out of money before a single user logged in.

Because he started with a solution, not a problem.

Because he argued with his team, not with the market.

Because nobody needed the features he added.

The worst part?

He tanked his own mortgage building it.

Don't build in a vacuum.

Validate first. Sell second. Ship last.

Agree?

You hit that ceiling fast

Not enough hours in the day 

Keeping and finding customers is really hard. 

Delivery, closing, social, finance. 

It seems almost impossible to keep going. 

You can’t imagine being five times as busy. 

You would die. 

Or would you? 

Maybe there is a way to get out of your way.

If your title has to carry the company, you didn’t scale. 

You became the bottleneck with a fancy LinkedIn headline.

It’s not about "having the biggest team".
It’s not about being “busy”.
And it’s definitely not about "saving the day" - again.

Scaling is about subtraction and multiplication.

Its about exponential increase...
Of impact.
Of freedom.
Of peace.

It’s the ability to walk away and play with your kids.
To pay for surgery when your dog gets sick.
To choose your day off — without asking permission.

Whether you’re making $500K or $50M, scale isn’t more.
It’s less.
It's leverage.

And when you understand that

you stop working yourself into the ground.

It’s Friday. Go do something fun.
Hopefully your business can keep running while you recharge.

You work hard.
You stay busy.
But secretly, you wonder:

Does any of this actually matter?

Is it moving the needle...
Or just part of the 80% that doesn’t touch your revenue?

We confuse motion with meaning.
We follow what’s expected—
Not what’s effective.

Here’s the fix:
Break it all down.
Forget “best practices.”
Return to first principles.

What moves your business forward?
Start there.
Only there.

The rest?
Noise.

Can you think of one thing you do that's useless?

He was still a corporate exec who risked getting fired.

It turned into $7.5M.

Bold move. Risky, right?

Not really.

Justin Welsh was making an asymmetric bet.

Worst case?

He wastes 10 hours.

Has an awkward convo with his boss.

Best case?

He builds an audience.

Creates leverage.

Transforms his life.

Risk-reward ratio? Easily 1,000:1.

He cleared it with leadership.

Then spent 15 minutes a day sharing insights.

That “small” bet?

It became a $7.5M solo business with 90%+ margins.

Here’s the kicker:

In 2021, he made 8 similar bets.

7 failed.

1 printed millions.

You don’t need to be right often.

You just need one right move with asymmetric upside.

Before your next decision, ask:

What’s the downside?

What’s the upside?

Is the ratio at least 5:1?

If yes → take the bet.
If no → redesign it.

The best entrepreneurs aren’t the busiest.

They’re the best asymmetric thinkers.
