4 ways to build your life around a purpose

Taking accountability shouldn't sound like an apology.
But sometimes we confuse the two.

A small sentence can make or break our start.

Opening with "I'm sorry we missed the target" can shift the audience from confidence to uncertainty.

Don't gamble with your executive presence. 
It's one of the obvious criteria when your next promotion is being discussed. 

Here's the critical difference between apology language and accountability language:

Most people walk into difficult conversations with a script.

Leaders walk in with a ritual.

The difference? 
One prepares what to say.
The other prepares who to be.

When I failed at difficult conversations, it wasn't because I wasn't prepared. It was because I had prepared myself poorly.

I was focusing on what I thought I should say instead of trying to understand the other person. 

Here's the 5-minute pre-conversation ritual that works.

1️⃣ The Stakeholder Lens Shift (60 seconds)
↳ Stop asking "What do I need to say?"
↳ Start asking "What does this person care about most?"
👉 Write down their top 3 priorities before you write your own

2️⃣ The Outcome Anchor (60 seconds)
↳ Define what success looks like for BOTH of you
↳ Not just your goal, their goal too
👉 "If this goes well, what changes for them?"

3️⃣ The Emotional Pre-Flight (90 seconds)
↳ Name what you're feeling (anxiety, frustration, defensiveness)
↳ Acknowledge it, then park it
👉 Three deep breaths to reset your nervous system

4️⃣ The Assumption Check (60 seconds)
↳ List your assumptions about their position
↳ Mark each one as "verified" or "assumption"
👉 Most of your stress comes from stories you haven't verified

5️⃣ The First Question (30 seconds)
↳ Don't plan your opening statement
↳ Plan your opening question

•	Led definition and implementation of first measure of NPS and OTD in EMEA and drove a 10% improvement against baseline in the first year.

You finally have time set for that romantic dinner date with your spouse.  Her favorite location, the smell of butter, garlic, and wine wafting from the kitchen as you imagine a plate of Veal Parmigiano.  The maitre’d seats you and you open the menu as you feel a familiar buzz from your jacket pocket….
Your phone ringing.  It's work…again.

You missed another of your son’s soccer games.  His dejected gaze at his shoes when you explain, it carves at your soul.  That look from your wife….all too familiar.  

You can see that your strategy is outdated, opportunities laying lonely on the table like those magazines articles you keep meaning to read.

You also build trust through vulnerability - sharing some of the hidden things in the ‘facade’.

It may seem oversimplified to think about this with a 2x2 matrix.

But if you really think about it….does leadership need to be more complicated than this?
