"I'm looking for fulfilling work, something that matters." I've heard this from dozens of executives in their 50s and 60s.

And it makes complete sense - when you've spent decades building expertise, you want your work to mean something beyond just collecting a paycheck. 

The data supports what I'm hearing on the ground. In a recent LinkedIn poll with 1700+ responding, 33% said that a sense of purpose was their top motivator (with 38% saying that they were motivated most by flexibility/WFH and 25% motivated most by salary).

These folks want to work for companies whose missions align with their values. They want to solve meaningful problems using their decades of hard-won expertise. They want to mentor the next generation and leave a legacy beyond quarterly earnings reports.

This shift creates an interesting disconnect in the hiring process. Companies often assume they can't afford experienced talent, especially when they see Director or VP titles on a resume. They worry about salary expectations before even having a conversation.

But here's what they're missing: Many experienced workers would gladly trade a portion of salary for meaningful work, flexible arrangements, or the chance to make a real impact. They're not looking to coast - they're looking to contribute in ways that matter.

Before you assume that candidate is out of your budget, pick up the phone and have a conversation. They wouldn't have applied if they weren't genuinely interested in what you're building. You might be surprised at what matters most to them.

"I'm 62 & have at least 5 good years of work left."

I've heard from 1000s of job seekers in their 50s, 60s, and beyond within the past few years. Folks often lead with their age when they reach out, as if they should apologize for wanting to work.

Listen, you don't have to apologize to anyone if you want (or need) to keep working into your 60s and beyond.

Most of us don't have a guaranteed pension and won't be retiring in our 50s. My data shows that 90% of us plan to work into our 60s and 25% of us plan to never retire.

However, if you're 50+ and navigating the job market, you’re not imagining it: ageism is real. 66% of workers have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace according to a 2025 AARP survey.

With that said, I'm seeing folks in their 50s and 60s land great jobs (even in this challenging market). I recently had a client in his late 60s land his "dream job" as an IT analyst, countering the ageism that can be so prevalent in tech - so yes, you can position yourself as the leading candidate, regardless of age.

Here's how to get started:
* Keep networking (let people know you are looking)
* Write an "ageless" resume (with quantified results)
* Build a LinkedIn presence (so recruiters find you)
* Stay confident (you can do this - I promise)

Focus on what you can control. And please, don't lose that confidence. Any company would be lucky to have you.

ps: If you are hiring, please review your practices. Are you interviewing candidates over the age of 60? How about candidates over the age of 50? If not, why?

I spent the past 2 days at AARP headquarters with 100 fabulous female creators learning about the best practices on how to thrive in today's business world and I can't wait to share everything that I've learned with you.

When I started my newsletter 2 years ago, I really didn't have an end game - I just figured it would be a good way to keep in touch with you on a regular basis. 

While at AARP, we talked a lot about how independent podcasts and newsletters like mine are the future of news and I'm thankful that you trust me as a news source. 

Here are a few toplines I'd like you to think about as you think about where you fit into this new world of work:

Embrace the spirit of reinvention: AARP emphasized the power of reinventing yourself over time. We heard from numerous speakers who successfully changed their career paths to adapt to both industry changes and their own changes in goals. I’d challenge all of you to think about where things are going in the world, in your industry/role, and how you can serve others in new ways. I’ll be doing the same and I’ll keep you posted on my learnings.

Focus on what makes you unique: Listen, AI and ChatGPT have nothing on you and your unique perspective. While at AARP, we talked at length about capitalizing on what sets you apart - and how we can all share our gifts in different ways. This is your competitive advantage - we all have our own areas of strength. Don't be afraid to own it!

Community is key: None of us can do this on our own - we need to work with others to make progress and drive change. I am thankful to be part of your online community, but meeting so many amazing people at this in-person event reminded me that we need both in-person and virtual communities to truly learn and grow. 

Sometimes you are going to have to take a risk in order to build community - I had never met any of the conference attendees in person before going to Washington, DC, but everyone was so friendly and it was great to learn what's working (and what isn't ) for others. Most people want to help if they can - let them!

My 50-something VP client just did what everyone says is impossible: landed a great tech role with promotion and raise through an online application. 

The kicker? We built his resume together 2+ years ago. It's still opening doors because we didn't create a generic tech resume. We showcased his full value by sharing how he drives impact and results through his work:

* Led teams of 200+ people (not just managed code)
* Advised C-suite on strategic initiatives (not just tech specs)  
* Launched products that drove growth (not just features)
* Demonstrated leadership beyond technical expertise

Here's what I know: The job market isn't growing much right now. I'm not an economist, but I'm not sure that it's going to get better anytime soon.

However, my client didn't wait for conditions to improve. He kept applying with a resume that actually showed what he could do for companies.

I know many of you are applying everywhere and still facing rejection. It's exhausting. Others have paused their search entirely, waiting for things to improve. But what if this IS the new normal? The few companies that ARE hiring need to see your value immediately and clearly on paper.

Your 2-year-old resume might be outdated, but his wasn't - because we built it to showcase timeless value, not trendy keywords.

The market is tough - I won't sugarcoat that. But people are still getting hired, promoted, and valued for their experience. You just have to present it in a way that cuts through the noise.

If you're in the thick of it right now, I see you. You're not alone in this. And stories like his remind us all that breakthroughs can still happen - even in this market.

"Should I stop consulting to focus on my job search?"

I get this question from executives at least once a week. My answer is always the same: Absolutely not.

Here's the reality: Companies expect executives to consult between roles. It shows you're in demand, staying current, and solving real problems. The issue isn't whether you should consult - it's how you present it.

For better or for worse, perception is reality, so you need to show that this consulting work is serious and not some sort of filler. Also, you'll attract better clients if your company looks like it's a real solution. Here's my blueprint for presenting your consulting work like the executive you are:

1. Create a Professional LinkedIn Business Page: Establish a real presence here. If you don't have a business name yet, "Jane Doe Consulting" works perfectly. Add a professional logo (Canva's free version is all you need). This instantly elevates you from "unemployed" to "selective about opportunities."

2. Join LinkedIn Services Marketplace: Get yourself listed where companies are actively searching for expertise. You never know who is looking for someone just like you to solve their problems.

3. Establish Your Thought Leadership: Reporters need experts. Be one. I've been quoted in Fast Company, Forbes, and Yahoo Finance using:
* Qwoted
* Featured
* Help a Reporter Out  

These aren't vanity metrics. They're proof points that position you as an industry leader, not a job seeker.

Your consulting isn't a gap-filler. It's a strategic advantage. Present it that way.

When executive clients start working with me, they often have ignored their LinkedIn profiles and resumes for years because they just had too many competing priorities. They haven't needed to update things, so they just put it on the back burner. I completely get it.

The good news: if this is you, you can make up for lost time fairly quickly.

Here's what I suggest in getting started:
1. Be clear on your goals: Know what you want to do next (the types of roles/clients that you are looking to attract) and focus your efforts on highlighting the impacts/results that you have delivered in these areas in the past.

2. Demonstrate your value through numbers: I'm an engineer by training, so I make spreadsheets for everything. I get that this might not be you - however, I challenge you to quantify what you can and show numbers (product revenue, etc) whenever possible.

3. Weave early experiences into your summary: When you have high-profile early experience, you don't need to leave that on the 2nd page of your resume. Highlight this in your Executive Summary to show your career journey in a clear and concise way.

4. Use headlines to grab the reader: Leave the objective statement in the 1900s where it belongs. Modern resumes and LinkedIn profiles focus on what the employer/client is looking for. Your goals are important to you, but not necessarily important to future employers.

One more note: this may not be the time for you to do this work. Just know that when you are ready, making these updates may not be as hard as you think.
