For almost a year, the biggest mystery in Tribeca wasn’t a new restaurant opening — it was why this one wasn’t.

As someone who walked past the corner multiple times a week, I was just as curious as everyone else.

Eventually I discovered the founder, Sammy Nussdorf on TikTok, documenting the entire journey of trying to open a gourmet grocer in NYC — and it all made sense. 

He seemed to hit every obstacle possible:

--The city took months just to turn on his cooking gas
--He had a medical procedure that delayed the process
--Staff training, taste testing, product iterations
--Custom packaging, custom recipes, custom merchandising
--Partnering with top CPG purveyors to create items exclusively for Meadow Lane

What became clear was this:
He wasn’t trying to open quickly. He was trying to open perfectly.

Not a 2–3x better experience than the alternative — a 10x better one.

And after finally walking through the doors today for the first time, I can confidently say he delivered.

The space is stunning.
The food is fantastic.
Premium containers, premium baskets, a wild drink assortment, beautifully merchandised shelves, and hot + cold prepared foods that looked (and tasted) top tier.

In consumer/retail, you only get one chance to make a first impression — and Sammy absolutely nailed it.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Sammy and Meadow Lane. Totally worth the wait.

A founder recently asked me for advice on how to pitch a VC.

My answer: just be yourself.

The older I get, the less I try to “perform.” I don’t tell investors what I think they want to hear — I just do me. Authenticity is undefeated. Everything else is transparent BS.

I’ve always loved the quote from Naval Ravikant (Founder of AngelList): “Play long-term games with long-term people.”

If a potential LP doesn’t like me, or my style, or my philosophy — great. I don’t want them in the partnership to begin with.

Raising a fund usually takes 1–2 years. I’m in no rush. I tell LPs that I typically look to get to a decision within a few weeks of the first conversation (unless more diligence is needed).

I’m also not overly sensitive to minimums. My goal is simple: bring the right people into the partnership, prove the strategy over time, and go deeper together across multiple funds.

I recommend that LPs to evaluate me the same way I evaluate founders:

Start small.
Watch how I operate.
If you like what you see, double down.

Long-term games. Long-term people.

Last night my wife surprised me with tickets to the Maroon 5 concert at Madison Square Garden, and something hit me watching Adam Levine on stage.

He’s 46 years old.
He’s already cemented his legacy.
Dozens of Top-10 singles.
Two decades of hits everyone knows.

And yet—he got on stage and worked his ass off.

Full energy. Full charisma. Full effort.
Singing songs he’s performed thousands of times.

I kept thinking: How many times has he sung these same songs?
It has to get old… right?

But that’s the point.

A great artist never stops playing their greatest hits.

And a great CEO never stops pitching their company.

The best founders tell their story again and again—to investors, customers, candidates, partners, the press, anyone who will listen. They repeat the mission until they’re sick of hearing it… because that’s when the world is finally starting to hear it.

There is no “I’ve made it.”
There is no finish line.

If you want to build something enduring:

Keep showing up.
Keep pitching.
Keep telling your story.
Keep playing your hits.

Just like Adam.

Day 2 highlights started with HAX tours and startup pitches, plus hearing from the wonderful Lucy H. Partman, PhD and Ari Fox. We then had lunch at the gorgeous Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office New York! Big thanks to Consul General Luc Decker and both Kıvanç Ergu, PhD Lis Dahm. It was so wonderful to hear from John Dagostino with Coinbase, Zheng Yang with AWS and Michael Sachs with Paypal. Last but certainly not least we wrapped up with Bloomberg Beta portcos like Baton MelodyArc and Protege, plus a great panel featuring both Natalie Fratto and Catherine Y. Zhai!
