Something I learned from running ads for Reddit, Doordash, and Uber… CMOs need to do EVERYTHING possible to minimize ad spend that doesn’t generate revenue. 3 proven ways how:

(1) Stop collecting leads with no path to conversion.

This could be by gathering leads for a newsletter…

Or running Facebook lead forms and collecting hundreds of leads but sending them to a long-term nurture campaign instead of the sales team.

But it's just not a good idea. Don't optimize for just the form fill stage unless you're very advanced and have a brand strategy that involves that (and you'll know it if you are that person).

Most people just shouldn't do straight lead ads that don't have a goal of getting people to convert.

Getting people to sign up for a newsletter is almost always a waste of time. You're spending money to collect contacts that won't turn into customers.


(2) Stop running brand awareness ads without tracking and measurement.

Brand awareness ads need to be combined with measurement. That can be on-platform measurement tools (LinkedIn, Facebook, Google all have good measurement options).

It can be a lift test where you serve ads to half a geography and not the other half, or half a list and not the other. It can be a good "how did you hear about us" survey on your site that you use as data.

Bottom line is that you need measurement of some sort.

You can't just run awareness ads and measure your results on "we got this many impressions and this many clicks."

Without a good feedback loop telling you that your campaigns are working, you might as well not run ad campaigns.


(3) Stop thinking leads will close on their own.

You need a sales approach that is designed to close people.

I've never seen a company succeed without either a good salesperson or a really slick signup flow.

People won't give you money on their own.

You can generate all the leads you want.

If nobody is actively working to convert them, your ad budget is just filling a database that goes nowhere.
