Today's 1-min conversion copywriting tip: rules are meant to be broken.

So when you run a web page or landing page through ChatGPT and ask it to tell you what's wrong with it... it might give you the wrong answers.

Because AI is trained on "best practices."

But best practices aren't always the best route to follow.

Story time:

I once audited a business book description on Amazon for a contact of mine.

It was converting -- but it could be doing better.

Which was weird because it was already "doing all the right things":

✅ Copy was neat and tidy (well spaced)
✅ Lots of customer testimonials (great social proof)
✅ Clearly explained what the book was about (reducing anxiety about the purchase)
✅ Copy was short and could be read quickly (low cognitive load)

This page should’ve been converting like crazy.

But it wasn't.

Because... it looked and felt exactly like every other Amazon book description.

So as I wrote new copy, I purposefully skipped over the so-called “best practices”:

- I wrote a long, winding hook -- a full paragraph long -- based on the book’s introduction (to build tension and excitement)

- I wrote long fascinations (bullets) for each section of the book (to visually convey the value in each chapter)

- I deliberately mixed up the order of the chapter bullets and omitted some details (to further build excitement)

- I cut several testimonials out of the description (they weren’t punchy enough IMHO)

- And I doubled the total amount of copy (to over 3,700 characters)

The result?

Book sales shot up.

And the page is still converting (4+ years later).

That and the author ended up hiring me to do the same for their second book as well 💪

So before you let AI "fix" your perfectly imperfect web page...

Just remember that AI is trained on patterns. On those industry "best practices."

Meaning it won't tell you when to break those patterns or best practices if they're not working for you.

AI can tell you you need chocolate chips if you're making chocolate chip cookies (duh).

But it can never tell you what's the Goldilocks amount: what's "just right" for whoever's supposed to be eating them.

It can predict what'll happen if you add too many (cookie's too sweet).

Or if you add too few (cookie will be more cookie than chocolate chip).

But... some people LOVE overloaded choc chip cookies (like my kids).

And some people LOVE the less-choc-heavy ones.

But unless you already know upfront how few -- or how many -- chocolate chips your audience actually want in their cookies... AI won't be able to tell you what's the right amount for your audience.

Hint: It's the same for copy as it is for recipes.

It's your job to know exactly what your audience likes and wants. Not AI's.

Because if you know what they want, then you'll always be able to whip up something that'll please them.

So the next time you go to write copy... instead of asking AI "what does X target audience want in Y solution?"... go hunt around on Reddit for a bit first. (Or better yet, ask your customers for real by interviewing them)

You might surprise yourself just how quickly you come across the answer.

And then when you *do* know what they want, whether you write it yourself or get AI to do it, you'll at least know that you're on the right track.

P.S. Apparently my baking posts get a lot more engagement than anything else. Huh.

So many "smart" solutions are actually pretty dumb. 

Add to that the fact that when everything around us becomes "smart" -- that just makes us dumber.

"Smartify Everything" - new cartoon and post:

One of the most popular cartoons I ever drew was about the Internet of Things, right after Google announced the acquisition of Nest in early 2014.

“I think my Nest smoke alarm is going off,” one character tells another. “Google Adwords just pitched me a fire extinguisher and an offer for temporary housing.”

iRobot later proved that truth is stranger than fiction when photos taken in homes by a beta version of its Roomba vacuum robot somehow ended up on Facebook in late 2022, including a photo of someone on the toilet.

Yet the drumbeat to "Smartify" just about every product by connecting it to the Internet has only accelerated in the AI era. The latest is a "Smart Toilet" with an in-bowl camera from Kohler that analyzes photos and connects findings to a health app.

Some of these products have true utility. But the question is whether the advantages outweigh the drawbacks, particularly in privacy, security, and the cost to repair. There are inherent vulnerabilities of having so many products connected to the Internet.

A few years ago, a casino business was hacked through an Internet-connected fish tank Smart Thermometer in the hotel lobby.

In October, Smart Mattresses from Eight Sleep crashed during the Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage in the middle of the night. Some mattresses got stuck at an extreme incline. Others readjusted the sleeping temperatures to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

CES debuts many of the Smart Products that come to market. An organization called The Repair Association started to give out "Worst in Show" awards for the "The Most Overengineered, Unrepairable, and Unsustainable Tech Disasters at CES."

This year's "Who Asked for This?" award was given to Samsung for a Smart Washing Machine that makes phone calls, requiring unnecessary screens and microphones (which can break faster at a higher cost). As they put it, it's an example of "force feeding useless smart features, all just to be able to take a phone call from a washing machine."

When so many smart products seem to be jumping the shark, I think there's an opportunity for brands to go the other way. As BBH once put it in a Levi's ad, "zig when others zag."

I have gained a huge knowledge of affiliate marketing from a publisher point of view including the various commission structures of CPM, CPC and CPA.

I have strong presentation skills as I regularly pitched to new clients, as well as presenting campaign reviews.

I didn’t expect to be posting about a toothbrush on LinkedIn.

But here we are.

I picked up a SURI brush recently and honestly, it’s one of the best product experiences I’ve had in a long time.

The box feels premium.
The unboxing is clean and intuitive.
The emails are thoughtful and well-paced.
The product itself? Genuinely beautiful.

Most oral care brands stick to the clinical, sterile category norms.

SURI went the other way.

They’ve clearly thought through every touchpoint. not just how it looks, but how it feels.

And that’s what stood out most.

This isn’t about branding for the sake of it. It’s about consistency.

Every interaction from first click to first brush reinforces the same message:

“This is a better experience.”

Quick win idea in the run up to Black Friday:

If someone returns to your website and has something in their cart...

Open that cart immediately to show them.

So many people forget they've already put a cart together, or forget what they were looking at before.

If you've got your carts set to retain the contents indefinitely then you might even find people coming back after months and they'll get a reminder of why they were there last time.

This is especially powerful now in the run up to Black Friday.

If you are going to be running a deal in the coming weeks, get this in place, and then email your list to let them know about it, and to prepare their carts in advance.

This will work really well for anything that is actually limited or exclusive

Everyone likes to do a bit of window shopping

So encourage them to do it now while they aren't overwhelmed

Tell them to build the cart of their dreams.

When you drop the Black Friday sale they'll all come back to the website to see their existing cart

and its just the 1 click to get to checkout.

Smooth, seamless, and a great way to build up attention ahead of Black Friday.

A $9M lighting brand came to us convinced they needed a sales team for B2B orders.

They were ready to hire 3 people, build a CRM, create sales decks - the whole expensive circus.

Here's what we did instead:

Added one form to their site: "Buying for a Business?"

That's it.

The form collected:
- Company details
- Order requirements  
- Preferred contact method

Then routed everything to their existing customer service team.

No new hires.
No complex B2B portal.
No 6-month implementation.

First month results:
→ 47 B2B inquiries
→ $73k in bulk orders
→ Zero additional headcount

But here's what really surprised them:

Most business buyers never even used the form.

They just bought directly through the site like regular customers. They didn't want special treatment or negotiated pricing.

They wanted simplicity.

The form just gave them confidence that B2B was welcome.

Sometimes the solution isn't adding complexity.

It's removing the friction you didn't know existed.

That lighting brand saved $180k/year in salaries they didn't need.

And captured $800k in B2B revenue they were already losing.

I didn’t think anyone wanted to hear from a “CRO guy.”

But here’s what happened when I started showing up consistently:

- Grew to 15,000 followers
- Hit 500,000+ podcast downloads across 275 episodes
- Built an email list of 7,500+ from CRO content
- Invited to speak at industry events, webinars, and panels
- Guests now ask to come on the podcast
- Worked with 100+ brands across DTC

No thanks.

7-8 figure brands are burning 40% of their ad spend on a broken funnel.

I ran the numbers for a brand last week. They were spending $100k/month on ads with a 2.2% conversion rate.

Solid traffic. Great creative. Decent CTR.

But their funnel? A leaky bucket hemorrhaging potential customers.

Here's what the math revealed:

If they improved conversion from 2.2% to just 3.2%, they'd add $4.3 million in annual revenue.

Same traffic.
Same ad spend.
Same product.

That's not a tweak. That's a whole new growth trajectory.

Most people think CRO is about button colors and headline tests.

The reality is that a proper CRO programme uncovers what actually makes people buy

and then systematically optimises every part of the funnel around those behaviours.

Meanwhile, people are chasing:

- New ad platforms (6 months to profitability)
- $100k redesigns that don’t fix the fundamentals
- Gimmicky apps that promise conversion lifts but only eat margin

When the answer is sitting right there in their existing traffic.

The worst part?

They think their 2.2% is "industry standard."

But I've seen the same products, same price points, same audiences converting at 4-5% with proper CRO.

That's the difference between scaling profitably and burning cash.

Stop thinking of CRO as just conversion optimisation.

Start thinking of it as Customer Revenue Optimisation - the foundation that makes everything else work.

Because without it, you're just paying Facebook to send visitors to a leaky bucket.

If you want to grow your DTC brand in 2026, forget chasing the latest tactics.

Focus on the fundamentals that actually move the needle.

Over the last 12 or so months I've been running a bit of an experiment in my personal life.

It involves having shared custardy of the family dog. 

He stays with us for anything from a few days over a weekend, to 5 weeks while my parents are off enjoying a trip to Japan & Korea.

I think I'm now able to state with absolute scientific certainty that everyone should get a dog.

It is 100% the best thing you can do for your mental health, especially if you work from home a lot.

Their very presence brings joy and Charlie loves nothing more than to receive a bit of fuss from random strangers in the pub.

Remember, a dogs not just for Christmas, but it absolutely will be the best gift you ever get

We’re nearing the end of the year. Things are calming down, and we’ve moved past the chaos of Black Friday.

But here's the thing, don't coast for the rest of the year.

It's tempting to start winding down but there’s still plenty of opportunity to make a difference.  

You don’t need to launch new channels or overhaul your Shopify store.

If there’s one thing you focus on before the year ends, make it this:

Improve the customer experience.

Think about the unboxing experience, post-purchase emails, making support easier to reach or streamlining the returns flow.

Ask yourself: "What can we do to make our customers’ lives better?"

That’s the kind of simple, impactful change that pays off long-term.

Don’t let the year close without taking that time.

Your customers will thank you, and so will your revenue.

Keep pushing, even when things slow down.

If one is weak, your conversion rate suffers, no matter how much traffic you throw at it and no matter how much you tweak your ads.

Start with this:

 → Walk your own funnel
 → Mark every point of hesitation, confusion, or indifference
 → Fix that first

Stop tweaking headlines and start fixing the actual blockers.
