"To Be Successful, You Have to Be Shameless and Stubborn"

I’ve learned that success rarely 
comes to the quiet observer.

It finds those who are a little 
shameless and a little stubborn.

📌 Shameless enough to raise their hand, 
even when they’re not fully ready.

📌 Stubborn enough to stay the course, 
even when the applause fades.

I’ve had seasons in my career 
where I felt underqualified for 
what I wanted next.

But I asked anyway. 
I reached out anyway.

Sometimes the answer was “no".
Sometimes it was silence.
But each time, I gained 

➡️ Clarity, 
➡️ Confidence, 
➡️ and one more layer of Courage.

When I first switched roles into tech, 
it wasn’t a smooth leap. 
It was a slow, messy climb.

I had to prove what I could do long 
before anyone paid attention.
That meant;

➡️ Showing up, 
➡️ Creating, 
➡️ Experimenting, 
➡️ Volunteering, 
➡️ and Finding ways to add value where I was.

And honestly? 
That’s where the growth happened, 
not in the easy wins, but in the quiet 
persistence of trying again.

Even with Anutio, 
there were moments that 
tested that stubbornness.

Building something new 
often means walking a road 
nobody else has cleared for you yet.

But every “no” became data.
Every detour became direction.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

My younger brother once taught 
me a subject I didn’t understand.

Yes! my brother, who was three
 classes behind me. 😅

I remember sitting there, 
a little embarrassed at first, 
but quickly realizing how 
much sense he made.

In that moment, I learned something 
far bigger than the topic itself.

👉🏽 Wisdom doesn’t always come from who’s older.
👉🏽 Age doesn’t determine who you can learn from.

Sometimes the people behind you

you’ve never seen from your angle.
And if you stay humble enough,

Today, I still carry that lesson

a teammate, or a younger colleague, 

I remind myself:

Not All Advice Should Be Followed

In 2019, someone told me:

 “Ehi, you’re too much."
"You need to tone it down.”

At the time, I didn’t fully know how to respond.

I was the girl with the bold brown hairstyles, 
the kind people whispered about in hallways.

✔️ The one who asked “too many questions,” 
✔️ spoke with conviction, 
✔️ and showed up with ideas that 
felt bigger than my job title.

And I remember thinking, maybe they’re right.
Maybe if I toned it down a little, I’d fit in better.

But here’s what I’ve learned since then:

📌 Sometimes, people don’t mean 
to shrink you, they just can’t 
handle your full volume.

➡️ That boldness they call “too much” 
might actually be your difference.
➡️ The curiosity they find “disruptive” 
might be your superpower.

And the version of you they’re 
uncomfortable with might be 
the exact one that opens doors 
you’ve been praying for.

If I had listened back then, 
I probably wouldn’t be doing 
half of what I do now; 
🔹lecturing,
🔹mentoring,
🔹building Anutio,
🔹and helping people find
their voice in their careers.

✅I kept the hairstyles.
✅I kept asking questions.

And somehow, those very things 
that made me “too much” became 
the things that set me apart.

🎯So here’s my little reminder to you:

✅ Not every advice deserves obedience.
✅ Filter it. 
✅ Keep what builds you.
✅ Release what boxes you in.

Because the world doesn’t need 
a toned-down version of you, 
it needs you, in full colour.

Show Up. 
Speak Up. 
The World Can’t Celebrate What It Can’t See.

For a long time, I struggled with showing up.
Not the physical kind, 
I was present in meetings, 
volunteered for things, 
did great work.

But I kept my achievements quiet.
Because I didn’t want to sound 
like I was bragging.

Because “the work should speak for itself,” right?

Except  it doesn’t.

It whispers.
And most times, no one’s even listening.

I remember the first time I shared 
one of my milestones publicly.
It was about being recognized for a program. 
I almost didn’t post it.
But when I did, something shifted.

➡️ People reached out.
➡️ Opportunities came in.

And it wasn’t because I suddenly became “better.”
It was because I became visible.

Since then, I’ve learned that; 
❌ Showing up isn’t arrogance, 
✔️ It’s accountability to your own growth.

✅ Talking about your achievements creates 
room for others to see what’s possible.

Because that one post could:
🔹 Inspire someone who’s just starting out.
🔹 Attract a collaborator who’s been 
looking for what you do.
🔹 Remind you how far you’ve 
come on days you forget.

📌 Some of the biggest doors that 
opened for me from being invited 
➡️ to speak at events, 
➡️ to building Anutio, 
➡️ to mentoring emerging professionals 
all started because I showed up and shared.

So here’s your gentle nudge:

Stop waiting for permission to 
be proud of yourself.

If you want a promotion,
here’s what you need to stop doing...

I talk to professionals every day who feel stuck.
They’ve been in their roles for 2 - 3 years.
🔹They work hard. 
🔹They meet their targets.
And yet… no promotion.

When I ask what they’ve tried, 
the answer is always the same:

“I'm just hoping my work speaks for itself.”

That’s the biggest career myth.

Here are 4 things to stop doing 
if you want to get promoted:

1. Stop waiting to be noticed.
People are busy. 
Your manager has their own goals.
If you don’t advocate for yourself, 
you’ll stay in the background.

2. Stop focusing only on execution.
Promotion isn’t about output, 
it’s about impact.
Start asking: 
"What value did this task create?"

3. Stop avoiding uncomfortable conversations.
You’ll need to ask:
➡️ “What does success look like 
for promotion or for a raise?”
➡️ “What gaps should I close to 
be considered?”

4. Stop assuming more hours = more value.
Strategic contribution > working overtime.
Ask yourself: 
"Am I driving results or just staying busy?"

I emphasized something
I’ve learned over time:

You may be one person out of thousands 
who thinks your idea is worth pursuing 
but that conviction is your superpower.

🎯 Stay stubborn about the vision, 
but open-minded about how 
the problem gets solved. 
That’s where real innovation happens.

Entrepreneurship is a mindset
 one that blends 
🔹resilience, 
🔹curiosity, and
 🔹the courage to explore problems deeply.

Be stubborn about your purpose, 
open-minded about the process, 
and bold enough to take risks.

Three signs you're not ready to be a manager yet.

Most people think being a manager 
is about a title, it’s not. 
It’s about mindset.

✅ If you blame others when 
things go wrong… you’re not ready. 
Leaders own the wins and the losses.

✅ If you avoid hard conversations… 
you’re not ready. 
Growth requires honesty, not people-pleasing.

✅ And the real test: if you can’t 
delegate… you’re not ready. 
Leaders don’t do everything themselves, 
they empower others.

Management isn’t about control.
It’s about responsibility, courage, 
and the ability to multiply your 
impact through people.

Are YOU ready?

You won’t always know what’s next and that’s okay

I used to think successful careers 
were built on certainty.
Now I know, they’re built on courage.

🔹Courage to try something new.
🔹Courage to start over.
🔹Courage to keep showing up 
even when your path feels unclear.

I thought I wanted to be on the trading floor

At some point, 
➡️ I wanted to be a portfolio manager
➡️ Later I thought I wanted to be in Market Risk
➡️ Then it was cybersecurity,
➡️ Later it was Digital Marketing.

And I experimented and tried out all of them.
Either through a 9-5
Or through freelancing or supporting a startup.

Some I hated. 
But each one added a layer of expertise
And unique perspectives that 
made me standout in the next role

When I left Risk Management 
to explore Tech, I was terrified.
I worried I’d wasted time. 
That I’d have to prove myself all over again.

But that season taught me 
something I hold close:

✅ Clarity comes through 
movement, not waiting.

📌 I landed my first product role 
because of my ability to initiate things.

✔️ You can't fake it if you don't have it.
And it came through in my interviews.

Every experience, 
even the uncomfortable ones 
shaped who I am and how I lead today.

That’s what inspired Anutio to 
☑️ Give others a way to see their progress clearly, 
☑️ Get into the art of DOING INSTEAD OF WAITING
☑️ To connect the dots, and 
☑️ To believe in the journey they’re building.

I went back to school this week. 
Not because I failed a class…
And not because my daughter needed a ride. 

I went back to Durham College, my alma mater.
Not as a student — but as an alumni.

For the first time in 20+ years, I attended an alumni event called 'DC Talks: From Education to Entrepreneur'.

5 incredible alumni took the stage —
each one at a different stage in their journey:

Paul Fritzsch(Horticulture – Food and Farming)
Zenon Issel(Mechanical Engineering Technology)

It was part inspiration, part reality check… and completely worth it.

When students started asking questions — including me (yes, I raised my hand too 😅) — something clicked.

Afterward, a few students came up to me to talk about photography, content, and careers.

That’s when I realized…I’ve been missing out.
This is another way to give back — to pour into the next generation like others once did for me.

So yeah, I might be 20 years late to my first alumni event.
But I’m right on time for what’s next.

Durham College will see me again —
(and not just when I’m dropping off my daughter 😉).

You forgot to tell your photographer who your VIPs are.
Can you blame them when they don't get the important photos?

I LOVE when event planners send me a breakdown of the event itinerary.

A lot is going on and your photographer doesn't have time to run around and ask who is who.  We are concentrating on getting great photos.

Here's the problem,

You didn't say that some important visitors are attending.
Therefore you MIGHT get photos of them interacting with your team etc.

Key word is might.

The way around this is to include this important detail when you have your pre event meeting.

Last week, I shot an NCAA basketball game and I made it a point to ask and research who the stars are. 

Preparation is KEY.  Help your photographer prepare!

I wasn’t expecting a marketer to change my whole approach to networking…
but that’s exactly what happened.

(And the wild part?
 It happened 15 minutes into a conversation I wasn’t even recording yet.)

I walked into the BizCon Business Expo with a simple goal:
Find some business owners and attendees who could help me level up my business.
No pitch - No agenda - Just curiosity.

Along the way, I was grabbing some content.

I ran into marketer and podcaster, Jason Hunt from Merged Media, at his booth after his intriguing keynote about using AI for marketing, and we started chatting.

15 minutes go by—great conversation, tons of value—and then he looks at me and says:

“You should be recording this.”

It hit me.
I spend time interviewing attendees and vendors, but sometimes the best insights come when the camera isn’t rolling.
So I mic'ed us up and hit record.

And Jason dropped actual actionable marketing gems—simple moves I can apply immediately to grow my business and improve my content strategy.

But here’s the real takeaway:
Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from a keynote or a workshop, they come from the unplanned conversations with the right people.

It kills procrastination.

It helps to eliminate doubt and fear.

1-No one cares about what you are doing...so create away
2-Be prepared when something unexpected happens or just roll with it

You cannot let your fears stop you from completing your mission.

And if you can't get content yourself, get some help.
