Your nervous system is shrinking your career:
I used to think I was held back by timing, visibility, or office politics.

Turns out, I was looking in the wrong place.

The real blocker? My nervous system.


Here's what the science shows:

Under pressure, your brain shifts into protection mode. Strategic thinking shuts down. Old patterns take over.

👉 Yale researchers found that stress temporarily disables the neural circuits responsible for communication, creativity, and long-range decision-making.

Translation: The moment you need your best thinking is exactly when your system makes it unavailable.


But here's the part that changed everything for me:

👉 Harvard's "thin-slicing" research shows people form impressions of your confidence and leadership in 30-40 milliseconds.

Before you even speak.

They're reading your nervous system state through micro-expressions, breath, posture, tone.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱:
Your thinking sharpens.
You speak from truth.
People trust you instinctively.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁:
You over-explain.
Your presence shrinks.
Your skills become unavailable.

Same capability. Different internal state. Completely different outcomes.

I've had both experiences in the same week - sometimes in the same day.

The difference was never my preparation.
It was my capacity to stay grounded under pressure.

Which brings me to the most important insight:

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
𝗜𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲.

So I stopped optimizing my strategy and started expanding my capacity.

Here's what actually works:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟵𝟬-𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁
Before any high-stakes moment:
Inhale for 4. Exhale for 6. Repeat for 90 seconds.

This signals to your system: "This is intense... and I'm safe."

It sounds simple. It's wildly effective.

→ “I’ll go first, even if it’s uncomfortable.”

It’s not easy.
But it’s how trust is built.

And it's going to get you eaten:

(and most professionals still don't)


1) 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀

They show up as:
→ "Stretch assignments"
→ "High-visibility projects"
→ That charming new boss in the interview

By the "big eyes, big teeth" phase?
You're already trapped.


2) 𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁" 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲

Little Red followed instructions perfectly.
And almost died for it.

High performers do this all the time:
Execute flawlessly → end up completely misaligned.

Loyal execution ≠ good strategy.


3) 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗵" 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲... 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲

The signs are always there earlier:
→ Weird vibe in the culture
→ Off-script behavior from leadership
→ Identity mismatch with the role
→ Energy drain that won't quit

But humans (like Little Red) love to assume "it's probably fine."

It is not.


4) "𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆" 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻

Grandma's house wasn't safe.
It was the illusion of safety.

Most careers don't fall apart from risk.
They fall apart from staying too long in a chapter that already ended.


5) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁

Turn overthinking into your superpower:

1) Reframe overthinking as deep thinking.
↳ You’re thinking thoroughly. Your ability to see nuances is a strength, not a flaw.

2) Create “if-then” plans.
↳ Overthinkers are great at predicting obstacles. Use that to pre-plan solutions.

3) Name your negative voice.
↳ When self-doubt creeps in, say: “Oh, there goes Bob again.” Instant detachment.

4) Set a “decision deadline.”
↳ Give yourself 24 hours to research, then act. No endless loops.

5) Brainstorm, then bucket.
↳ Write down EVERY idea—then categorize them: urgent, future, unnecessary.

6) Challenge your assumptions.
↳ Ask: “What’s the worst that could actually happen?” 90% of the time, it’s survivable.

7) Use “think time” intentionally.
↳ Block 20 minutes just for overthinking. Once time’s up, move on.

8) Find a “thought filter.”
↳ Run your thoughts by a mentor, friend, or coach. Fresh perspective = clarity.

9) Default to action.
↳ When stuck in loops, do something. A small action clears the mental fog.

10) Turn overthinking into creativity.
↳ Your inner dialogue is a gold mine. Overthinkers make brilliant writers, artists, and innovators.

Overthinking isn’t the enemy. Uncontrolled overthinking is.
Harness it, and you’ll make better decisions, faster.
