You notice it in a meeting.

Someone who normally pushes the conversation forward is quieter than usual.

The person who used to challenge ideas now just nods and moves on.

They still deliver the work.
Deadlines are met.

But something has changed.

This is called “quiet cracking.”

It’s when someone mentally disengages long before they physically leave.

The problem is that this doesn’t show up in HR metrics.

The signals show up in behavior:
↳ Less challenge in meetings
↳ More compliance than contribution
↳ A shift from engaged to compliant

The work still gets done.
But the extra 10% disappears.

Most retention metrics are lagging indicators.
By the time the data shows a problem, the employee has already left.

Retention is ultimately a leadership skill, not a metric.

Leaders who know their teams well enough to notice these shifts early can address the issue before it ever shows up on a dashboard.

One of the most valuable things a founder can find is the right room.

Yesterday I attended my first ENRG (Entrepreneurial Networking Resource Group) meeting in Naperville.

I am on a journey to learn more about EOS Worldwide (Entrepreneurial Operating System), and this was the first place I decided to start.

The EOS community so far has been great, and I continue to be amazed by the interesting and helpful people in this community. 

One of the great things about ENRG is that there is one EOS topic at every meeting led by an EOS Implementer. It’s a good opportunity to get your feet wet.

Mike Shereck led us through a conversation on The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni and highlighted an additional foundational layer called the “3 C’s”: Character, Communication, and Capabilities.

It was valuable to hear the perspectives in the room and how people have seen this applied in growing organizations.

Mike Shereck and Bryan McDonald also took time to help break down some of the challenges I’m navigating in my own journey building a business. 

Having access to experienced professionals so willing to share their perspective and support others along the way is one of the strengths of this community.

Ambitious goals are easy to write.

Scaling an organization to consistently deliver those results is the harder part.

Many companies that struggle to grow aren’t missing ideas.

They’re missing systems.

When systems aren’t in place, a few patterns tend to emerge:

Processes live in tribal knowledge.
Work depends on one expert.
Performance isn’t visible until there is an issue.

This is where performance becomes dependent on a single person and progress is constrained by their capacity.

I see this frequently in growing companies and large enterprises trying to improve performance. They’ve managed without systems for a while, but it’s not sustainable. 

Eventually the organization reaches the limits of what that expert can support.

Here are a few practical first steps to start tackling this:

↳ Are you dependent on one person to complete a critical task? 

Ask them to write the process down and have someone else test it. Hidden tribal knowledge is one of the biggest barriers to scaling.

↳ Can people see how the work is performing? 

Visibility invites conversation and creates an opportunity to identify where processes need to be improved or documented.

↳ Are experts part of the discussion when performance is reviewed? 

Those conversations often surface what needs to be documented, standardized, or systemized.

Organizations don’t scale on effort alone. They scale on systems.

AI is moving past proof-of-concept pilots.

The real challenge is operationalizing it inside organizations.

The organizations that win won’t just have better models.
They’ll have systems, governance, and teams that evolve as fast as the technology.

Here were a few takeaways from the Snowflake Data for Breakfast event yesterday that stood out:

✅ Start small. Iterate. Learn quickly.

Avoid large waterfall AI implementations.

Instead:
• Run small experiments
• Build proof of value
• Iterate based on what works
• Use clear go / no-go criteria

Organizations see the most success when AI initiatives begin with controlled experimentation before scaling.

✅ Start with the business problem

Don’t jump straight into the technology.

Start with:
• The question your users want answered
• The decision your users want improved
• The outcome the business needs to achieve

Too many organizations jump into tools and then struggle with adoption because solutions weren’t designed around user needs.

Include someone from the business or user group in the iteration process.

I’ve seen many teams build solutions in a technical “black box,” only to rework them once the business interacts with the output.

Define the problem and user pain points first—and keep users involved as the solution evolves.

✅ Your data must be AI-ready

AI performance depends heavily on data quality and structure.

Is your data:

1️⃣ Governed

 Clear lineage and compliance.

• Know where the data came from
• Understand how it was transformed
• Ensure privacy and licensing compliance

2️⃣ Accessible

 AI needs structured, well-defined data.

• Clear schemas
• Data dictionaries
• Defined fields
• Consistent formats

Without this, models struggle to generate reliable outputs.

3️⃣ Contextualized

AI also needs the right framing and inputs.

• Clear problem definitions
• The right features available at inference time
• Representation of real operational scenarios — not just ideal conditions

The conversation around AI is shifting.

Early discussions focused on model capability.
Now the real differentiator is organizational capability.

Recently, a colleague asked me if it was worth it.

Yes.

Two years ago, I started my LinkedIn journey after it was recommended by my career counselor at UNC Chapel Hill. 

At the time, I felt stuck in my career — up against a glass ceiling and completely burnt out. I was at a major turning point in both my career and my life.

I stopped relying on other people to tell my story and started listening to my advisors.
