The Santa Clara County Estate Planning Council is the fifth estate planning council I have visited here in the Bay Area since we got into the business of supporting estate planners back at the beginning of the pandemic.

We also learned about the National Estate Planning Council's AEP (Accredited Estate Planner) designation from Mary "Kit" Mac Nee, CFP® CRPC®QPFC®CEPA®, who tirelessly leads the umbrella NAEPC Association and helps member chapters unlock more value from their investment.

Unfortunately, the default setting of our society is set to "systemic racism and inequality". 

Systemic racism is embedded in housing, policing, immigration enforcement, and wealth distribution. 

The American Immigration Council reports that California is home to over 10 million immigrants, many in mixed status families navigating real fear of detention or separation. That fear shapes daily life.

After engaging with Ibram X. Kendi's framework on antiracism after reading "How to Be an Antiracist", I came to realize that silence stabilizes inequity.

Kendi argues that policies either produce equity or inequity. There is no neutral ground. That insight carries weight.

When white women in California use visible cultural signals to help distract immigration enforcement, it reflects an awareness of how racial perception affects safety. 

Research from Pew shows immigrants remain a politically charged issue, yet broad public support exists for pathways to legal status. Many of us cannot ignore the history that precedes the political status quo alongside the subversion and sometimes literal erasure of the original inhabitants of this land.

Privilege can insulate and when leveraged wisely, it can also intervene. The question is how consistently it is used to reduce harm and expand dignity.

Thank you to all the allies, accomplices and champions who are expanding access to freedom and wealth for all.

Not by saying "you don't see color."
Not by collecting Black friends.
Not by eating ethnic foods.
Not by dating, marrying, or having kids with racially marginalized individuals.
And certainly not by saying "All Lives Matter".

It's by understanding what's at risk for a population then using your privilege to stop injustice.

That's when racism ends: when you remove the barriers that racially marginalized people face and expose those who erect them.

This insanity tracks 100% for venture funding as well.

Ketanji Brown Jackson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. She graduated cum laude from Harvard Law. She was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. She spent 20 years as a lawyer and 10 years as a federal judge before being nominated to the Supreme Court.

They called her a DEI hire. They questioned her credentials for hours. They interrupted and belittled her. Still, she was "unqualified." Still, she was "only there because of her race."

Now let's talk about who they call "prepared." 🙃

Markwayne Mullin has a two-year community college degree in construction management. No military service. No law enforcement experience. Former MMA fighter and cow-calf rancher. Just nominated to run Homeland Security. Trump called him "one of the most prepared people" he could have picked.

Pete Hegseth was a Fox News host who never held a senior military or national security position and couldn't name a single country in ASEAN during his confirmation hearing. He now runs the Department of Defense with its $850 billion budget and 2.5 million service members.

Linda McMahon has a French degree and spent her career running WWE. Her only education experience was one year on Connecticut's Board of Education, and she lied on her application claiming she had an education degree. Never taught a day in her life. Now Education Secretary.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has no medical degree, no public health training, no science background. He spent decades spreading vaccine conspiracy theories. Over 75 Nobel Laureates urged the Senate to reject him. He now runs Health and Human Services while a measles outbreak spreads across Texas.

You see the pattern yet? 👀

A Black woman with impeccable credentials gets interrogated like a suspect. Meanwhile, a parade of underqualified individuals waltz into the highest offices with nothing but proximity to power and the right skin color or cable news contract.

Merit was never the standard. It was always the excuse.

They don't hate DEI because it "lowers the bar." They hate it because it threatens a system that's been handing out participation trophies to mediocre white men for centuries. They're not protecting standards. They're protecting an inheritance they never had to compete for.

When a Black woman is overqualified, she's a "diversity pick." When a white man is underqualified, he's "a fresh perspective."

This is what they mean when they say they want to go back to "merit." They want to go back to a time when they didn't have to compete with us at all. 🎯

Happy 101th birthday Dottie! 

You’d be so proud of how your grandbaby “Teppanie” turned out…

This week Dottie Rosso would have been 101. Last year I bought a bottle of her signature perfume, Youth Dew. She sometimes wore a little too much and her whole house smelled like it. That smell is so linked to her.

I smelled it yesterday and tears immediately came to my eyes. It felt like a hug from her. She left this world at 97 and I miss her every day.

It might seem silly to buy a perfume I would never wear, but it the sense of smell is the most powerful trigger for memories.  In the moment that I smell it, I am transformed to being in her embrace.

The photo on the right was taken when she was 85. So young in spirit!

She was a force of nature who helped co-create The Fund Raising School with my grandfather Hank. She was in the movies as a child, had wild adventures, surfed with seals in the 1930s and 1940s, rode elephants and was so ahead of her time in every way. I could write an incredible book about her life... sometimes I think I might. 

I hope to be like her when I grow up... Eli Angote would probably tell you that I am stubborn, determined and frugal like her already. 😆

So if it helps to have a little bottle that transforms me for a moment that she is with me... so be it! Grief, loss and legacy have many paths and sometimes we get a little creative.

Many families shop for estate planning the same way they shop for appliances . They compare line items and hunt for the lowest fee and sometimes even end up with software driven templates.  It feels responsible in the moment.

Yet I often return to something a mentor once told me. There are two things he would never cut corners on. Lawyers and tires. 

Both protect you when conditions get rough. Both determine what happens when control slips.

As Justin Miller frequently tells us, research from The Williams Group suggests that roughly 70 percent of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation and 90 percent by the third. That erosion is rarely about poor documents. It is usually about breakdowns in communication, trust, and shared values.

A thoughtful estate plan is more than a binder with a written set of instructions. It is a system that comes with coordinated advisors, clear succession conversations, and structures that support stewardship. 

When families invest in a team that thinks beyond signatures, they strengthen both assets and alignment across generations.

The real return is continuity. Wealth can fund opportunity and help with philanthropic causes that make the world a better place for all of us. Values guide its use. The right advisory team helps both endure.

Listening to Barack Obama speak brings me back to a deep realization.

Some people choose the easier path.

Others are wired for the harder one.

I have made peace with which path is mine.

A high melanin body moving through systems not built for it. 

An ADHD hunter mind that sees patterns before others do. 

An entrepreneur’s instinct to build new structures instead of waiting for permission.

Add death positivity, speaking uncomfortable truths, and living relationships openly. 

None of those paths optimize for comfort. They optimize for honesty.

Entrepreneurship asks for courage. So does challenging cultural norms. So does speaking up when silence would be safer.

But progress rarely comes from the easy road.

Some of us are simply wired to push boundaries and stand in the tension even when it costs something.

That same spirit defined the life and work of Jesse Jackson, who spent decades pushing America to expand its definition of justice and dignity.

Rest in power Jesse.

Growing up, Lego was my childhood sanctuary and happy place right along side my toy cars and TinTin comics. These tiny interlocking bricks, whose Danish name literally means "I assemble" or "I put together" in English, sparked endless creativity on the floor of my mom's apartment where I grew up in my childhood stomping grounds of Nairobi. 

It's only now that I lament the lack of diversity in their colors, a sea of uniformity that mirrored broader exclusions after I came across Ekow Nimako's breathtaking sculptures, crafted exclusively from black Lego bricks as showcased in WIRED’s “Obsessed” video. His work transforms that nostalgia into an awe-inspiring celebration of Black Excellence.

This Ghanaian-Canadian artist builds an Afrofuturist universe filled with dragon cats (Cadissa), trickster gods (Kwaku Anansi), and evolving figures like Flower Girl where Black mythology and history take center stage. 

Prototyping in a day but pouring up to 1,000 hours into each masterpiece, Nimako honors the power and majesty of African people thriving against systemic racism's hurdles. 

His work signals a world slowly embracing their resilience, turning childhood bricks into monuments of identity and triumph. 

In this Black History Month, it’s a joyful remix of my Lego memories, now vividly diverse and alive.

Diversity is like hot sauce. It belongs everywhere. It makes everything it touches more interesting.

When we celebrate the first Black woman admitted to practice law in New York, we are honoring courage that reshaped the legal system itself. 

Diversity strengthens firms. It improves problem solving. Research from McKinsey consistently shows that companies with greater ethnic and gender diversity are more likely to outperform financially.

But beyond performance metrics, this is about dignity and access. Law shapes legacy. Law shapes wealth transfer. Law shapes who feels seen when navigating systems built without them in mind.

Meta decided death is a content problem.

Not a human tragedy. Not a moment for dignity. A gap in the monetization feed.

Patent US12513102B2, filed by Meta's own CTO Andrew Bosworth, describes an AI bot trained on everything you ever posted, liked, DM'd, purchased, and browsed that will keep posting as you after you die. Slide into your friends' DMs with your name on it. Simulate your voice. Your face. Video calls. While you are dead.

And the people who receive those messages aren't supposed to notice. That's the stated design goal. Deception as a service. Trauma as a service. 

The patent's problem statement doesn't mention grief or family. It says your absence creates a bad "user experience" for people in your network. The severity they're measuring is the impact on the feed.

Your death, in their framing, is a content gap.

And your ghost? It doesn't generate revenue for your family. It generates revenue for Mark Zuckerberg. Post-mortem wage theft, extracted from digital remains, in perpetuity, with no off switch.

As a descendant of people who were treated as property rather than persons, I am done being subtle about what this is. The United States innovated on enslavement by making it lifelong and hereditary. Meta has decided to extend that tradition beyond the grave.

The patent doesn't expire until 2043.

Who decided this was acceptable? People did. Specific people with names and titles. The CTO of Meta filed this patent. Even if they never make this into a product, the clear INTENTION of such thinking is horrendous.

This person gets it. Black History Month has nothing to do with superiority based on skin color. It's about learning about what Black people have experienced. And contributed.

As a DEI advocate, I grow bored of people asking, "Why do we need Black History Month?"

Because, Susan, US schools do a poor job of teaching kids the contributions we've made and the racism we've experienced. This is why many people aren't culturally competent and is why many aren't knowledgeable about systemic racism.

Here was my crash course on Black History coming up: slavery happened, slavery ended, MLK said I Have a Dream, there were marches, racism ended. 

Like April Ajoy, I didn't know about redlining, mass incarceration, housing discrimination, and the GI Bill until in my 30s. And I didn't know that Black people were responsible for inventing the stoplight, gas mask, lawn mower, and open heart surgery until I was dang near 40.

Yes, Black History is American History. But learning about American History means we need to learn how the US has silenced the voices and contributions of those descendent from slaves. 

For us to grow as a nation we need to embrace the good and bad parts of our history. History isn't there for us to like or dislike. It's there for us to learn and grow from.

A friendly reminder that Black people are not required to educate people about why the N-word is harmful, even if the person saying it has Tourette Syndrome. ESPECIALLY when that word wasn't beeped out, but other words have been. Just sayin'.

It's 2026. You all should know by now how dehumanizing that word is. We're all too old not to know at this point.

I truly don't get it when marginalized folks vote against their own interests.

I read a story of a Nigerian man who once voted for you-know-who because Nigerian culture generally opposes feminism and LGBTQIA+ rights. He did not, however, anticipate the bigotry he faced because he is a Black immigrant. Here's the rub: 

It doesn't pay for marginalized folks to throw other identities under the bus. Here are but a few examples of how that backfired:

👉🏾 Conservative white women in DEI who lost jobs due to DEI programs being cut.
👉🏾 Somali immigrants who became naturalized citizens being targeted by immigration enforcement.
👉🏾 LGBQ+ individuals who voted against trans rights, only to have their own protections taken away. 

These people need to realize the same people who oppose SNAP benefits, learning about the history of racism, women voting, and trans rights don't care about them either. It's a small club and they aren't in it. This is why none of us are free until all of us are.

An identity wheel with marginalized and privileged identities.

In the wake of the BAFTA incident, the Obama monkey post, and all the other nonsense since day one, the Black people in your life may or may not be okay.

Below is a helpful guide on engaging Black people in the wake of tragedies and ongoing racism. If you do engage, here are some other tips:

👉🏾 Please DO NOT say "I don't see color, I see you." When you say this, you are disregarding the very racism your Black friend or colleague is describing. The individual is still Black whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.

👉🏾 Avoid asking "Why is this racist?" That is tiring. Many Black people are exhausted from having to explain (over and over) about why saying the N-word, following us around in stores, and calling someone an affirmative action hire is racist. Google is still free. Type your question in and find out.

👉🏾 Avoid rattling off your diversity resume. I get it. You're trying to sound like you're down for the cause. But I got news for you: some of the most racist, inappropriate things I've ever heard were from white people who had bi-racial kids, had abolitionist ancestors, and served poor, underprivileged communities. Why? Because they did the external work without examining their own biases. 

👉🏾 Educate yourself. Racism in 1909 is different than racism in 2026. Step into the 21st century. Understand that racism has not disappeared, but evolved.

👉🏾 Listen to understand, not to be right. Speaking from personal experience and observation, too many folks aren't listening to Black people. Or if they are, they're waiting for the opportunity to prove why racism doesn't exist because of LeBron James, Colin Powell, or other successful Black people.

Celebrating the "First Black" anything is less about skin color and more about breaking barriers.

Racist white people get all in a tizzy whenever people post about the first Black CEO of company XYZ, or the first Black woman puppeteer on Sesame Street.

They always whine "But what does skin color have to do with this?" I'll tell you:

👉🏾 It has to do with being the first in your family to attend college (in many cases).
👉🏾 It has to do with being twice as qualified and twice as talented to get the same opportunities.
👉🏾 It has to do with people accusing you of being a "DEI hire" when did everything to earn your spot---and more.
👉🏾 It has to do with paving the way for others who want to the same thing but need the extra motivation.

So the next time someone celebrates the first Black, the first woman, the first whoever, if it doesn't involve you, don't make it about you. Join in the celebration or move on. No one needs your negativity.

Dear well-meaning ⚪️ people: please stop using the phrase "I'm the least racist person you'll ever meet."

You may think you're letting us know you aren't racist, but you communicate the exact opposite. Here's why:

👉🏾 It shows you don't realize good people are capable of saying and doing racist things.
👉🏾 It shows you haven't examined your biases (or are dishonest about them).
👉🏾 People who have done some of the most racist things say this to throw us off the scent trail.

Please stop using this phrase in 2026. We still have folks saying this while supporting a man who actively dismantles Black progress. In fact, that very man himself said this phrase, just to show you how much he's full of it.
