I grew up in Kenya then moved to Michigan for college when I was 19. I hired my first employee in 2010 and ran my first full marathon in 2016. After completing that race in 5:25, I realized that I can accomplish whatever I put my mind to no matter what obstacles arise.
 
I work hard to see the goodness and kindness in everyone before I notice challenges and opportunities for growth. I do my best to speak from the heart at all times and to listen closely and acknowledge what is being said before I respond.

Just wrapped up my Thanksgiving coffee meeting with Kristi Royse  at Peet's — her office away from office where she coaches executives through the transitions that keep them up at night.

Back in 2019, Brenda Swiney introduced me to her about joining ProVisors. She didn't know me from anyone but she saw something in me. 

Some group leaders had already said no.

Kristi fought for me to get in.

That single "yes" became the foundation for everything we're building today.

Through Provisors, I connected with estate planning attorneys who became referral partners as they showed us what was broken in their world. 

The endless hours on logistics. The geographic limitations. The dreams deferred because they were stuck in execution instead of strategy.

Today, watching Kristi help CEOs navigate their own pivots and build stronger teams, I see the same pattern: one person's advocacy creates ripples that touch thousands.

Because of Kristi's belief in a stranger, we now serve hundreds of estate planning firms across the US. As we like to say we have amazing people from Maui to Maine. 

We've freed attorneys from the tyranny of geography: no more 2-hour drives for 20-minute signings. They're now protecting families who couldn't access estate planning before.

Some like Jeffrey Austin finally took real vacations.

All because one executive coach saw potential in someone she'd never met.

This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for leaders like Kristi who open doors without knowing what will walk through them.

But mostly, I'm grateful for the privilege of this work itself.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect after we finished watching the EPIC and UNFORGETTABLE final episode of HBO's  Six Feet Under on Saturday night.

Anyone who has seen that show almost unanimously agrees its one of the most amazing pieces of TV ever produced.

Death unites us all and the more honest we are about it, reality, the more fully we can live and maximize every drop on the miracle that is this one human life.

What an amazing time was had last Friday as Stephanie Rosso, PhD. and I raised the curtains and a toast to our brand new Clio Certified Partner status. It was wonderful that  Clio team members Angelica Cugini and Luke Wagner could join us all the way from Toronto with Andrea Moreno, MBA representing their Vancouver office. 

We were thrilled to have members of the TBN advisory board represented by Marion Engelke and Jesse Spears alongside connector and ecosystem builder Erik Mayo. It was also wonderful to meet our University of California, Davis MSBA Capstone interns Akansha Totre, Ritika Garg and LA Shae B. in person after working together virtually for a few weeks. 

A special shout out to our team members Sofia Schreier and Zilsha Kaye Meting who worked really hard behind the scenes to set up and promote the event. 

It was also great to see you Anne Gyemant-Paris, Claudia Brenner, Daniel E. Martin, Ph.D., Audrey Murray and of course a big thank you to our gracious host Tony Wessling of the Wessling Contemporary who I met via the illustrious powerhouse Jonathan Speed aka "Speedo" by way of Phil Dillard and the Brothas of Wingtip.

As Stephanie Rosso, PhD and I wrap up an unforgettable stretch in Southern California, we’re heading home tomorrow with full hearts, notebooks and a new respect for what traffic really means in this region. 🚦 

The week kicked off in Los Angeles with a mix of client meetings and reconnecting with clients, friends.  It was fabulous to connect with you Loriana Moizesch, Rosanna Savone and Rachel Fain, Anthony Davenport  and Lauren Neumann! 

Every conversation felt like a small masterclass. 

Real stories. Real challenges. Real momentum. 

It reminded me why showing up in person still matters, even in a world built on Zoom and e-signatures.

Then came the End Well  Conference. The programming offered thoughtful insights on caregiving, aging, end of life choices, grief management and how communities can better support families with difficult transitions.

The takeaways were grounded in evidence-based work shared by clinicians, researchers, and advocates across the field (see: End Well Foundation program materials, endwellproject.org). It stretched my thinking in a good way. It was fabulous to see you there Laurie Reese, Katina Perkins M.Ed., Byron Ricardo Batres, Estrella Serrato, Noelle Kimble McEntee, Gavin Walker, Michelle Desmond, Fernando Murillo, Elaine Esler, Katie Mayo and many many other amazing folks. More debriefs to come!

We closed the trip in San Diego for a beautiful wedding reception for none other than Gavel’s Brittany L. Hernandez and some long overdue friend time in Vista. Sunshine, laughter, and conversations that hit the reset button.

Across all of it, the theme was the same: growth happens when you step out of your bubble, stay curious, and keep listening.

Twenty years after its finale, HBO's Six Feet Under remains the most honest portrayal of death in American culture. 

Watching that legendary final episode last with Stephanie Rosso, PhD before heading to the End Well Conference wasn't just perfect timing but a masterclass in why our industry exists.

The Fisher family didn't just run a funeral home. 

They normalized the conversations nobody wanted to have. 

They showed death as messy, complicated, beautiful, and utterly human. Not the sanitized version we pretend exists, but the real thing that touches every family differently.

Building in death tech means confronting the same resistance the Fishers faced every episode. 

People want to look away. 

They want someone else to handle it. 

They want the paperwork done but not the conversation started.

But here's what Six Feet Under understood that Silicon Valley often misses: Death isn't a problem to solve but a human experience to honor.

The show taught me three things that guide every decision at our company:

1. Meet families where they are emotionally, not where your process needs them to be

2. The business of death is really the business of life; helping people maximize every moment they have left

3. Technology should amplify human connection, not replace it

When Nate Fisher said "You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone" — he wasn't just talking about moments. 

He was talking about the urgency of getting your affairs in order while you still can.

That's why we built remote signing capabilities. 

Not to avoid human connection, but to create more of it. 

To let families gather from anywhere. 

To remove geography as a barrier to being present for what matters.

Death unites us all. The more honest we are about that reality, the more fully we can live.

This weekend Stephanie and I experienced a magical evening of meditation with the deep resonance of the Gamelatron at Blue Heron Arts in SF.

This exhibit titled "1000 Ways to Sit" was breathed into life and curated by an amazingly deep soul and torchbearer of ancestral wisdom Kamau Akabueze (and friend of visionary artist behind the project Aaron Taylor Kuffner)who we met through Claudia Brenner last week. 

Thanks also to Robert Fishkin for introducing me to this art form earlier this year and to you Daniel E. Martin, Ph.D. and Tania Cuevas for further instigation. 

The experience is tough to put into words but I'll try. 

It feels like stepping inside a living instrument. 

Metal voices shimmer in the air. 

Each automated strike creates a calm pulse that settles the mind and lifts the spirit. 

It is an Indonesian ancient craft fused with modern tech, revealing how sound can hold memory, rhythm and quiet magic in one place.

When DEI advocates say "hit dogs holler", they mean the person is guilty of what the advocate is talking about.

During my time in retail, often the most defensive customers were the ones guilty of shoplifting, without us even accusing them. It's the same when discussing racism.

A DEI advocate doesn't even have to accuse a person of being racist for someone to get defensive. Merely discussing white supremacy, the history of racism, the need for DEI, etc. will trigger a LOT of folks. Here are but a few examples:

👉🏾 Discussing the President's unabashed history of racist comments and policies.
👉🏾 Shedding light on Charlie Kirk's legacy of racist comments.
👉🏾 Criticizing the 3,000 pages of racist comments on Telegram from Young Republicans.
👉🏾 Bringing up America's legacy of slavery and colonialism.

If you aren't racist, then why get so defensive? I understand that racism is a tough topic for many people, but I can guarantee that whatever discomfort you are facing doesn't compare to the people who experienced it.

This is why DEI serves as a mirror. It casts a reflection that people don't want to see. Too bad. We need that mirror. The problems we are having today only prove why we need it. The US wouldn't be in the crisis it's currently in had we chosen the Black woman instead of a subpar white man who cares for no one but himself.

Pay attention to how coded language is used to perpetuate racism.

Pre-Civil Rights Era, if you didn’t want Black and Brown people in white spaces, you could say that, and no one would bat an eye. By the late 60s, however, public opinion changed and tolerance for blatantly racist language dropped significantly. 

To keep the supremacy going, the language had to evolve. Enter dog whistles: language used to alert and rally anti-Black folks to thwart any initiatives or funding that would advance Black people. Let’s discuss some examples, shall we?

In his presidential campaigns, Reagan used the term “welfare queen” to mean poor, Black, single moms who abused governmental assistance. Nevermind that white, Latina, and Asian women also received benefits, with white women making up the majority of recipients.

Fast-forward to 2020. After George Floyd was un-alived in front of the whole world, companies pledged billions to Black businesses and philanthropies, DEI positions flooded the marketplace, and anti-racist terminology became viral on social media.

Prominent GOP members—along with the Man in Charge—weren’t having it. Their strategy: accuse CRT and DEI of being anti-white and market this smear campaign to people who weren’t familiar with either. Or bigots needing something to hate. 

Problem is, other historically excluded and underserved groups are suffering because of the anti-DEI movement. So when we say racism hurts everybody, trust us when we say racism hurts EVERYBODY.

It is really about time the medical field eliminates its racism.

A video of a Karrie Jones, a Black pregnant woman going into labor while being checked in at a Dallas hospital, has sparked outrage. Jones cried in pain as a nurse nonchalantly asked intake questions. Many are crying medical racism.

To be clear, I am not saying people from other groups don't experience neglect. What I am saying is that all too often, Black patients are medically gaslit and receive improper treatment, at least when compared to their white counterparts. Here are a few of the ways:

👉🏾 Black patients receiving less medication or their pain disregarded because they are believed to have a stronger pain threshold.

👉🏾 Being subjected to experiments without consent. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study comes to mind.

👉🏾 Pulse oximeters are often calibrated for lighter skin tones, which can lead to inaccurate measurements for people with darker skin. 

👉🏾 Healthcare professionals, even those who consider themselves anti-racist, can and do have biases against Black and other racially marginalized individuals.

And yet, the anti-woke crowd wants to eliminate DEI in medicine. Eliminating DEI isn't a game, folks. Again, DEI isn't just shoving people into positions. It accommodating the needs of diverse and historically marginalized groups. Eliminating DEI from medicine will cost lives. And that is simply unacceptable.
