My background in front line operations, compliance, management and training in financial institutions, stood me in good stead when I fell into the world of Data Protection.  I qualified as a Data Protection Practitioner in December 2019 and I've been hooked ever since!

Recognised as being a highly motivated individual with strong communication skills, I was shortlisted and a finalist in the categories of Rising Star and Compliance Officer of the year at the PICASSO awards in 2022.

Having presented at a number of international conferences, spoken on panels and contributed to international privacy drives I enjoy enthusing others, sharing my knowledge to stakeholders helping them develop and strong and uncomplicated privacy culture and ethos across the organisation.

As an ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems Lead Auditor, I believe that compliance of all relevant legislation should part of an organisations culture and not a tick box exercise. My ability to interpret and delivery regulatory requirements across the business, whilst maintaining high internal principles and keeping external business drivers at the fore, ensures that compliance does not become an afterthought in the business.

In my current role, I work with a number of international clients of all sizes, helping them to develop and deliver their privacy programme in a manner that suits their organisation.  Understanding the customers drivers and priorities is critical to success.

My passion for data protection privacy is linked closely to my passion for people. I firmly believe that data protection and privacy is not and should not be just a work thing but a life thing. Data protection and privacy are all about looking after people - just like you and me.

Have you ever played ‘Guess Who’? The game where you have all the people in front of you and you have to ask questions of your opponent to find out what person they've got on their card. Quite a simple game, but have you tried playing it with a young child? 

I’ve found they will quite often give you the wrong answer; you say “do they wear glasses?”, they say “no”, you put down all your people who don't wear glasses... and it turns out that they do wear glasses so you couldn't possibly have guessed the right person! 

Another thing I've noticed they do is – when it’s their turn to ask questions - they might ask about things that are irrelevant and you can't even answer, like “Does this person like cheese?”  

When we think about getting to know our customers or colleagues, it can be similar to that game of Guess Who. We have lots of questions and answers when it comes, and we need to have the correct answers, and it’s also key to make sure we’re asking relevant questions. I don’t believe we are always asking the right questions, or getting the right answers, and I want to help improve the situation. 

I'm Clare Paterson, a specialist in data in social housing. For over 25 years I've worked in quality assurance, risk management, and data management and I combine and draw on all that expertise in my work as a data strategist specialising in social housing, and a champion of data protection professionals. 

My experiences of working in and with landlords led to writing my first book; 'A Practical Guide to Data Protection in Social Housing' published by Law Brief Publishing.

I'm passionate about building a community of purpose-driven people, using data in a way that fulfils social purpose and builds trust with people. To that end, in 2024 I launched the DiSH - Data in Social Housing - Network, a paid community just bursting with value, and the best people (yeah, I'm biased, but I'm also right!)
