My mentor Mau was one of the greatest 
master navigators in the world.

In the middle of a violent storm, 
when no one onboard expected to survive, 
Mau held steady.

He didn't shout.
He didn't panic. He read the weather conditions, 
trusted his training, and brought everyone home.

The crew didn't survive because of his title.
They survived because of his calm.

3 things Mau's calm taught me about real leadership:

Years ago, I woke with an overwhelming urge 
to call a friend in California.

The phone rang. No answer.

I tried again. Nothing.

A third time. Still nothing.

A week later, I learned she'd tried to take her life 
that morning.

The housekeeper went upstairs because the phone 
wouldn't stop ringing.

That instinct to keep calling saved her.

That experience changed how I live:

1.	Toxic behaviour gets dealt with fast
Not managed around. REMOVED or corrected.

2.	Results never buy immunity
No one earns the right to damage the team.

3.	Pushback is safe
The truth can travel upward without punishment.

4.	Promotions are credible
People understand why decisions were made.

5.	Managers protect people, not just output
Burnout is treated as a warning, not commitment.

6.	Feedback is normal
Not awkward. Not political. Normal.

7.	Nobody sits above the standards
Not the founder. Not the rainmaker. Nobody.

That is good culture.

Not a slide.
Not a slogan.

But none of that means you mattered.

Real impact is quieter.

- It’s the call you took.
- The introduction you made.
- The encouragement you gave.
- The honest feedback you delivered properly.
- The moment you chose patience over ego.
- The day someone walked away from you
feeling more capable, not more small.

That is the really valuable work.

Especially if you lead people.

Especially if you build companies.

Because if your business grows but the people around you shrink,what exactly have you built?

I’ve met people with money, status, applause, and all the shiny nonsense.

Some of them leave a room way colder than they found it.

I’ve also met people with no big title, no flashy life, no need to perform.

And they change people everywhere they go.

One is “impressive”.

The other actually matters.

1.	Make people feel seen, not handled.
2.	Tell the truth with care, not cruelty.
3.	Use your experience to lift people, not dominate them.
4.	Leave people clearer, calmer, or stronger than you found them.

That’s a life well lived.
