My mentor Mau was one of the greatest 
master navigators in the world.

In the middle of a violent storm, 
when no one onboard expected to survive, 
Mau held steady.

He didn't shout.
He didn't panic. He read the weather conditions, 
trusted his training, and brought everyone home.

The crew didn't survive because of his title.
They survived because of his calm.

3 things Mau's calm taught me about real leadership:

1. Calm is a signal, not a personality trait. 
It tells others: we're not sinking. It's a choice you make

China just removed tariffs on imports from 53 African countries. 📦🌍

From May 1st, goods entering China from almost the entire African continent will face zero tariffs. 💼➡️📈
(Yes, you read that right… ZERO.) 

This is bigger than you might think…👀

China–Africa trade already reached $222 billion in early 2025. 🚢📊

And this new policy lowers the barrier even further.

For African exporters, it means easier access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets. 🛍️

Early in my career, I thought the solution was simple:

Explain things better…
Add more context…
Give more detail. 📊

But over time I realized the real issue was something else.

I hadn’t learned the client’s communication style yet.

And that’s the first thing you should discover when onboarding a new client. 🎯

Because every client communicates differently.

Some want quick updates.

A short message. A few bullet points. Done. 📱

Others want deep planning sessions where every detail is discussed. 🧠

Some prefer in-person meetings where trust builds face-to-face. 🤝

Others would rather handle everything through text or quick voice notes. 📲

None of these are wrong.

They’re just different styles.

The mistake many account managers make is assuming everyone wants communication the same way they do. 

For example, many Chinese salespersons expect their overseas clients to communicate using WeChat, which they are accustomed to.

But this is not always the case. Many overseas clients prefer to use WhatsApp rather than WeChat. 

However, great client relationships start with adaptation. 🧭

Your role is to adjust the pace and the style.

Because when communication matches the client…

Everything becomes easier. 💡

Trust builds naturally.

In fact…

The best partnerships start with understanding how the other person communicates.

Not just what they want…

But how they want to hear it.

So when you onboard your next client, ask yourself one simple question:

How do they prefer to communicate?

😬 Why do so many leaders avoid difficult conversations?

Because they think being kind means being nice.

But in leadership… those are not the same thing.

Early in my career, I made this mistake too.

If a problem appeared, I sometimes waited. ⏳
If someone underperformed, I softened the message.
If something felt uncomfortable, I hoped it would fix itself.

It rarely did. 😅

Instead, the problem grew.

That’s when I learned something important about leadership.

Kindness is not avoiding hard conversations.

Real kindness is clarity combined with respect. 🤝

The kindest leaders I know are often the most honest ones.

They don’t pretend everything is fine.

They address issues early… calmly… and respectfully. 🧭

Because when you avoid the truth, people feel it.

Unspoken frustration spreads.

Expectations become unclear.

And trust slowly fades. 🌫️

But when you speak openly, something different happens.

People understand where they stand.

And the thing is…

This idea isn’t new.

According to sources more than 2,000 years ago, the advisor to the first emperor of the Han Dynasty 🇨🇳 said: 

“Good medicine tastes bitter, but it heals.” 💊

He reminded the emperor to accept harsh advice if it helped make him a better emperor.

Because honest words, even uncomfortable ones, can protect something much bigger in the long run. 🏯

That wisdom still applies today.

Honest feedback can feel uncomfortable in the moment.

But delivered with care, it strengthens the relationship instead of damaging it.

So, the next time a tough conversation is waiting…

Don’t avoid it.

Because the most caring leaders aren’t the ones who stay silent.

They’re the ones brave enough to speak… and thoughtful enough to do it well. 🌱
