Panic is contagious.
Calm leadership is too.

My mentor Mau was one of the greatest 
master navigators in the world.

In the middle of a violent storm, 
when no one onboard expected to survive, 
Mau held steady.

He didn't shout.
He didn't panic. He read the weather conditions, 
trusted his training, and brought everyone home.

The crew didn't survive because of his title.
They survived because of his calm.

3 things Mau's calm taught me about real leadership:

1. Calm is a signal, not a personality trait. 
It tells others: we're not sinking. It's a choice you make 
in the middle of the storm, not after it passes.

In a meeting where panic is rising, 
your steady voice becomes the anchor.

2. Steadiness is the real authority. 
People don't follow titles when things fall apart. 
They move toward whoever isn't falling apart.

In a crisis, the person who slows down 
becomes the one others speed toward.

3. Clarity cuts through chaos. 
You don't need all the answers.

We rarely know the impact we make.

Years ago, I woke with an overwhelming urge 
to call a friend in California.

The phone rang. No answer.

I tried again. Nothing.

A third time. Still nothing.

A week later, I learned she'd tried to take her life 
that morning.

The housekeeper went upstairs because the phone 
wouldn't stop ringing.

That instinct to keep calling saved her.

That experience changed how I live:

1. Trust the nudge to reach out.
Don't wait for the right words. Just show up.

2. Listen with your whole self.
People are hurting in ways we can't see. 
Presence matters more than advice.

3. Small acts carry enormous weight.
A text. A call. A moment of attention. A text might be 
the only proof someone gets that they matter.

4. Your influence is already at work, whether you see 
it or not. The greatest compliment isn't praise. 
It's knowing you made a difference in someone's life.

You don't need a grand gesture.

Years ago, I walked into a hotel executive's office 
hoping for sponsorship for a local pageant.

My family was struggling. 
I was putting myself through college.

He dismissed me almost immediately.

Eight months later, 
I was crowned Miss Hawai'i.

Years after that, he found me.
"I saw a poorly dressed young woman," he said. 
"I didn't think you had a chance. 
I've followed your career since. I'm sorry."

I didn't remember him. 
But I remembered how he made me feel.

Being dismissed taught me more about humility 
than any success ever has.

None of us sit high enough to look down on anyone.

Humility isn't weakness. It's precision. 
It keeps your vision wide 
when success wants to narrow it.

The Story: I stepped into this critical leadership role with a clear mandate to drive a major cultural and operational shift within the Ontario Government. By leading a dedicated team, I am orchestrating the complete overhaul of how the province addresses workplace issues. As a leader, I've adopted a "pastor-parent" style—listening to painful stories of hurt and trauma from my clients and figuring out a way forward that instills not only confidence, but the competency needed to navigate these thorny workplace relationship issues. I'm giving hope not with platitudes, but with a concrete plan.

This transformation is directly focused on improving labor relations, ensuring greater accountability, and creating a more equitable, respectful, and modern organizational culture for the entire public service.

I am Your Movement Builder

The Challenge: To build a public service where every voice feels heard and where belonging is the standard, not the exception. This meant moving beyond traditional diversity training to engineer systemic, sustainable cultural change across the organization.

The Story: I lead this award-winning organization dedicated to fostering workplace belonging, inclusion, diversity, and anti-racism. This role is a testament to my commitment to systemic change: I manage a senior executive team who, in turn, oversee nearly 300 public sector professionals. We execute on people development strategies by advising senior leadership, including the Secretary of Cabinet, to create an OPS-wide, shared vision of an inclusive and anti-racist workplace. Most critically, I design and deliver organizational learning that creates safe and brave spaces for managers and staff, enabling courageous, career-advancing conversations across all levels of government. 

My leadership, vision, and innovation have transformed this network into a community where members see each other not just as colleagues, but as a supportive, working family. I recall one woman who wrote to me that the community I've created was "God sent," and another who said it "saved her life" because we provided a community that truly cares.

The End: My work is not just about building programs; it’s about building a legacy of leaders who fundamentally believe in belonging.

I am Your Strategic Resource & Talent Steward 

The Challenge: To ensure the critical policy and operational teams within the government's central financial agency were equipped with the necessary human and financial resources, while simultaneously tackling the long-term challenge of developing and retaining talent that is fluent in both digital transformation and complex government operations.

The Story: Building on my strategic work advising the Cabinet Office, I transitioned to the Treasury Board Secretariat to ensure that organizational strategy translated into effective resource deployment. My mission was to act as the steward of key public resources, managing and allocating funds to sustain high-priority government programs.

However, I expanded this role significantly by working with external partners, specifically Deloitte, to envision a better way to develop and incubate talent. My focus was on figuring out ways to keep and evolve talent that deeply understood the intersection of digital, technology, and government. This required rigorous budget monitoring, financial forecasting, and strategic alignment of personnel, confirming my ability to execute not only cultural transformation, but also the practical, innovative talent and financial operations that underpin a successful, accountable government.

The End: I laid the blueprint and groundwork for transformation the way I&IT talent are developed and positioned in the organization.

The Ontario Cabinet Office

I am Your Executive Coach & Culture Strategist 

The Challenge: To provide strategic Human Resources advice to the province's highest-ranking public servants, ensuring that talent management and leadership programs were rooted in modern principles of equity and inclusion. This often required coaching executives through unprecedented situations; I recall a Deputy Minister coming to me for guidance on how to best engage their teams when issues of the world couldn't be separated from the work.

The Story: I operated at the strategic apex of the public service, providing direct, critical HR advice to executives within the Cabinet Office. My mission was to improve the employee experience in areas like wellness, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism. When a Deputy Minister sought my counsel on navigating global issues impacting her team, I provided her a listening ear, reassurance, and guidance on practical steps of engagement, which helped alleviate her concerns and rectify the issue.

I successfully conducted, facilitated, and negotiated HR policies, but my most impactful achievement was introducing and facilitating anti-racism coaching sessions for the Cabinet Office Deputies (akin to CEOs) and Senior Management Tables—a significant first for the organization. Furthermore, I led the design and delivery of a ministry leadership management program for a large cohort of 39 students, where I was the first to co-design and develop a manager leadership module focused on anti-racism and equity. 

The End: This work fundamentally shifted how top-tier leadership approached talent and culture.

Senior Advisor, Talent & Culture 

Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services

I am Your Crisis Navigator 🛡️

The Challenge: The COVID-19 pandemic had fractured global supply chains, creating an urgent, life-critical need to secure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Canadians.

The Story: During the height of the pandemic, I served as a key leader in the global supply chain transformation. My mission was to ensure PPE reached the front lines, a mission fueled by listening to the stories of average citizens looking to me for the critical supplies they needed. I distinctly recall alleviating the concerns of a woman pleading for assistance, working to figure out a way to be a bridge of support for her and her organization. This personal connection drove my strategic work.

To achieve this, I provided strategic leadership and change management by building authentic, collaborative relationships with the most sensitive and critical clients. I navigated complex procurement and policy challenges to drive a massive transformation of Ontario's supply chain, ensuring timely and negotiated distribution of PPE. 

The End:  My work in fostering this collaborative, continuously improving, and inclusive environment was recognized by my peers, and I was nominated for the prestigious 2020 Amethyst Award for service excellence.

Change Management Lead

ServiceOntario, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services

I manage contracts and relationships of vendors, which operates our government offices (akin to business franchises). I provide advice and coaching to support their businesses. The goal is to change the customer experience of how citizens receive government services. I review regularly customer feedback, performance reporting and audits (i.e. compliance to privacy, accessibility etc.) and design work improvement plans. I coordinate and provide global communications for change management and briefing notes (status updates) for issue management. I monitor and analyze customer experience data across the province to tell the story and improve the experience. I work with our businesses to provide the right branding and advertisements on behalf of the Ontario government. I support them in serving a diverse audience in their towns and cities to be the best in class as a small business. In 2016, I received a government award with my unit for achieving excellence.

I acted as a portfolio lead for the Open for Business to support one-window modernization for clients. I transitioned to act as the project lead for the federal-provincial, call center program which had a yearly budget of $1M+ under the portfolio. I managed partner relationship with their transfer payments, key performance indicators and service levels.

Me in long if you need to know...

As an author, podcaster, and keynote speaker, I’ve had the privilege of making a meaningful impact on both my community and the broader world. My work centers on transforming workplace culture and leadership—ideas that have gained wide recognition and adoption.

I was honored by the Ontario Government with the prestigious Amethyst Award for my service as a public servant. Over the years, I’ve delivered speeches to professionals and senior leaders from all walks of life, including public servants at every level of government. I’ve also shared insights internationally, speaking to governments in Mongolia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The word courage means 'to have heart' in Latin. ♥️

Why is that important?


The reason is so because Fear can rob our life force. 

Fear can stop our hearts. It can figuratively a cardiac arrest of the things that we should be alive and a heart to do.

The antidote in one sense is encouragement.

Encourage literally means to give someone their heart back. 

It is like receiving a heart transplant or being resuscitated.

Or if you remember the Wizard of Oz with the Lion. He needs someone to give him a heart. This is where he was given encouragement to try things new.

Question:

➡️ How has fear stolen your courage? How has   fear taken your roar so to speak?

Courage is the heart of any miracle to stand when others say there's no ground to stand on like walking on water. 

Action: 

➡️ Have the courage to step out and walk on water with hopes and dreams when it seems impossible. 

Lean on a caring community who can give you their hearts to do so. 

Miracles can happen with a heart...or a bit courage. 😊♥️

Be realistic.
Expect a miracle.

You can't logic your way to courage.
You can't plan your way to belief.
You can't wait for certainty.

The first expedition I led was impossible.

5000 lbs of provisions.
Camera gear. Sound equipment.
A cargo ship negotiated with a government.
A month in Micronesia.

I didn't have the money.

One week before the ship left, 
I still didn't have the provisions.

What I had instead:

A choice.

I could wait for proof it would work.
Or I could act like it already had.

I chose to move forward.

I called every supplier. Made every arrangement. 
Acted as if the money was already there.

Seven days out, my first and only tax refund arrived. 
Enough to cover everything. 
We made it to the island and back.

Was it a miracle? Maybe.

But miracles don't show up for people sitting still.

They show up for people who move before the path is clear.

If you're facing something right now that feels too big. 
Too expensive. Too uncertain.

If you're waiting for permission. For proof. For certainty. 

Stop.

Know the risks.
Then expect the miracle anyway.
