Choosing character over credentials

The difference between performative 
and authentic character is simple:

Performative character asks:
"What will make me look good?"

Authentic character asks:
"What's right?"

I've seen executives with impressive credentials
crash and burn over character flaws.

And watched people with modest backgrounds
build empires because they were trustworthy.

The CEO who still answers his own emails.
The billionaire who's lived in the same house for 30 years.
The leader who promotes the person who challenged them.

They understood something
our credential-focused world forgets:

Credentials depreciate.
Character compounds.

Your followers can disappear overnight.
Your degree may lose relevance.
Your title changes with your job.

But your reputation
follows you everywhere.

Here's how to spot authentic character:

1. Watch how a person treats people
who can't help them advance.

2. Listen to how they talk
about people who aren't present.

3. Notice if their private values
match their public persona.

This question is like my North Star:

"If I choose character over credentials,
how does this decision change?"

Suddenly, every choice becomes clearer.
Every relationship deeper.
Every opportunity more meaningful.

We carry two resumes through life:

One lists our achievements.
The other lists our character.

Only one opens doors
that actually matter.

The world will always reward credentials first.
Character takes longer to pay dividends.
But when it does,
the returns are exponential.

This one line exposes almost 
every lie we tell ourselves.

We say we want more.

↳ More impact
↳ More money
↳ More freedom
↳ More respect

But our daily actions whisper something else.

Every time we:

• hit snooze instead of stand up
• avoid the hard conversation
• skip the work you said mattered
• betray the standard you set

That's not “being busy.”

That's negotiating with our own worth.

Discipline isn’t punishment.

Discipline is saying:

“I’m someone who does what they said they would do.”

Even when no one is watching.
Especially when no one is watching.

High performers don’t have more motivation.
They have higher self-respect.

They don’t ask: “How do I feel today?”
They ask:“Who am I becoming?”

And they act in alignment.

That’s discipline.
Not intensity.

Not all toxic agency leaders are founders or CEOs.

Some run teams.
Departments.
Accounts.
Regions.

They sit between the vision and the execution.

And when leadership breaks there…
the agency feels it everywhere.

got confused with aggression.

As if to be respected, you have to be feared.

That’s old leadership.

The highest performers I’ve met aren’t ruthless.

They’re grounded.
Direct.
Clear.
Consistent.

They hold standards and they hold people.

They give feedback without humiliation.
They move fast without leaving bodies behind.
They compete hard without killing culture.

You can be intense about the mission…

And kind to the people.

You can demand excellence…

And still be human under pressure.

You can build serious results…

Without becoming someone your kids, partner, or team don’t recognise.

Being nice doesn’t mean being soft.

It means:

• You tell the truth early
• You don’t play power games
• You give credit fast
• You take responsibility faster
• You leave people stronger, not smaller

Real power isn’t dominance.

It’s stability.

They wouldn’t be leaders.

They’d be trauma with a job title.

they don’t become high-performing.

The execution is undeniable:

Yet it’s the absolute engine behind these numbers 🚀

A winning culture isn’t an accident. It’s architected.

It starts before day one.

We don't just look for skills. 

We look for "Googleyness." 

→ Curiosity over certainty 
→ Resilience over perfection 
→ We value what you can learn, not just what you know.

It’s not a one-time onboarding week. 
It’s a career-long commitment. 

→ Upskilling in AI 
→ Encouraging internal mobility 
→ Treating failure as a data point, not a dead end.

-------------- Coaching --------------

Managers aren't just bosses. 
They are blocker-removers. 

→ They ask "How can I help?" not just "Is it done?" 
→ They prioritize psychological safety. 
→ They build leaders, not followers.

Revenue milestones are lagging indicators... 
of a winning culture and a team that feels 
supported enough to take risks.

2025 was a landmark year for the business. 
But I’m betting on the team behind the tech.

We are well-positioned for 2026.

And whilst I'm excited to see the numbers grow...
I am equally excited to see our people grow...

AI & ML → Deep Learning → Gen AI → AI Agents → Agentic AI.

Each layer doesn’t replace the previous one.

It absorbs it.

And the shift happening right now is massive:

We’re moving from: “AI that answers.”
to: “AI that acts.”

From content…
to capability.

From prompts…
to processes.

From tools you use…
to systems that work for you.

Agentic AI isn’t about better copy.

It’s about:

• Autonomous execution
• Long-term goals
• Multi-agent collaboration
• Memory + reasoning
• Tool orchestration
• Self-correction
• Governance and guardrails

In simple terms:

❌  Not “help me do this.”
But:
✅  “Own this outcome.”

And this is where leadership changes.

Because the advantage won’t go to the 
people who know the most prompts.

It will go to the people who can:

• Design intelligent systems
• Decompose real business problems
• Define outcomes clearly
• Build human-AI workflows
• Govern risk, ethics, and scale

The leaders of the next decade 
won’t manage people doing tasks.

They’ll manage systems that produce results.

The new book made it to best seller.
People seem to love it.
But I’m not happy ❌

And that’s not false humility.

It’s standards.

I’m deeply grateful. Truly.

The messages.
The reviews.
The support.
The fact it hit bestseller.

It means more than people realise.

But after days wondering what 
didn't feel right about it, I realized 
that I’m not happy with the 
reading experience.

Not the ideas.
Not the frameworks.
Not the message.

I love these... I'm proud of these. 

The formatting is the issue.

'Just' that! 

I compared it to my first book and it
was clear: the new book is 10x better
in content but much worse in its 
formatting. 

And here’s the truth most won’t admit:

📚 A great product with a poor user 
experience is still a poor product.

So I’ve paused promotion.

And I’m putting it back under the knife.

If someone gives me:

• their time
• their focus
• their energy

…I owe them excellence.

Not “good enough.”
Not “people won’t notice.”
Not “it already sold.”

But the best experience 
I’m capable of delivering.

This, I believe, is leadership too.

Raising your standards after the win.
Fixing what no one forced you to fix.
Protecting the craft.... event when 
applause would make it easy not to.

The book will be reformatted.

One could argue it's just ascetics... 

It's more. It's pride and reader experience. 

Because I don’t want readers to just agree with it.

I want them to feel it.

Use it.
Return to it.
Build from it.

And if that means slowing down a win…

So be it.

It should be updated and republished 
next week or week after lastest.

We don’t remember life for what we get.

We remember it for what we give 🥰

A few years ago, I received an email that said:

“You are changing these kids’ lives so drastically.”

It came from the Director of Development at Well Aware

We had made a donation that helped install a clean water system at a school where, before that, children had to carry water from home.

They don’t anymore.

Watching this back, I didn’t think about business.

I felt grateful.

Thank you James Stacey, Billy Wood, Sonia A. and for making that possible and Erinn Wright O'Donnell for the opportunity! 

Grateful that I’m still in a position to contribute at all.

And honest enough to say: 

I must do this in a more meaningful way.

Not louder.
Not for attention.
But more intentional.

Because I don’t remember what I earned that year.
I don’t remember the deals or the stress.

But I remember that email.
I remember those photos.
I remember how it felt.

We don’t remember life for what we get.
We remember it for what we give 🥰

The people we lift.
The dignity we protect.
The hope we pass on.

This video is old.

But the lesson isn’t:

Your legacy won’t be what you built for yourself.
It will be who became better because of you.

Build skills.
Build businesses.
Build wealth.

But above all…

Build people.

Netflix doesn’t “get customers.” 🎯
They design for a very specific type of one.
A powerful lesson for agencies today... 

They don’t ask:
“How do we attract everyone?”

They ask:
“Who are we building this for?”

And then they architect everything around that answer.

→ Algorithms
→ Interfaces
→ Data models

That’s why a Netflix user isn’t just a buyer.

They’re a compatible organism.

Now look at most agencies.

They build generic capabilities.
Then accept whoever turns up.

That’s like designing a Formula 1 car 🏎️
…and letting anyone drive it off-road.

Then wondering why everything breaks.

This is why ABM is not a growth hack.

It’s an identity decision.

It says:

→ These are the organisations we’re built to serve.
→ And these are the ones we’re willing to disappoint.

Dream clients aren’t aspirational.

They’re operationally necessary.

→ Their buying style fits your motion
→ Their problems fit your architecture
→ Their ambition fits your tolerance

They don’t force heroics.
They reward design.

If Netflix took every advertiser, every content pitch, every market…

They wouldn’t be Netflix.

They’d be cable TV with a login.

If agencies take every deal,
they don’t become successful.

They become complicated.

One evolved. 
One evaporated.
The story of Fuji and Kodak...

This story isn't a history lesson. 
It’s a warning for every agency leader 
currently "optimising" their way to extinction.

Kodak invented the digital camera in 1975. 

Let that sink in.

They saw the future before anyone else. 
They owned the patents. 
They had the smartest talent in the room.

And they still died.

Not because of a lack of tech. 
But because of a lack of Identity.

Kodak was obsessed with being a "Film Company." 

When digital arrived, they didn't see a revolution; 
they saw a threat to their margins. 
They protected the past until the 
past was all they had left.

Fuji asked a different question: 

“What business are we REALLY in?”

They realised they weren't in the "film" business. 
They were in the chemical science business.

So they pivoted. 

They used their oxidation patents to build skincare. 
They used their imaging tech to build medical diagnostics.

Fuji built new muscles. Kodak defended old ones.

🧠 This is the Agency Trap in 2026.

Most founders are still saying: 

“We’re a Performance shop.” 
“We’re a Creative agency.” 
“We’re a Social-first partner.”

Those aren't identities. 
They are services. 

And services are the new "film."

If you define yourself by your deliverables, 
AI will commoditise you by lunch.

Markets don’t kill agencies. 
Attachment does. 

Attachment to high-margin manual labor. 
Attachment to "how we’ve always done it." 
Attachment to an identity that the next decade...

...no longer requires.

The Agency of the Future doesn't "use" AI. 
It is rebuilt on an AI Operating System.

You have a choice: 

Protect your "film" (your current service lines). 
Or master the "science" (Strategy, Leadership, and Value).

Only one of those survives the pivot.
